The 6th Grade Band “Music In Our Schools Month” Concert is scheduled for Monday, March 26, 2018 at 7:30 p.m. in the Sheboygan Falls Middle School Auditorium.
We continue to work on the basics of playing which include posture, hand/holding position, breathing, and embouchure. You will definitely hear an improvement in our tone quality since our Winter Concert performance.
We continue to study whole, dotted half, half, quarter, and eighth note rhythm patterns. We are working on concert band arrangements that require us to be more independent as we have up to five different rhythm patterns going at the same time. We have learned that sometimes counting rests is more challenging than playing. We are definitely more Beatful.
We are much more confident with our notes…most of us don’t even write in note names or fingerings anymore. Sometimes we use an anchor chart (fingering worksheet) as a resource on our music stand just in case our memory fails us. We are definitely more Tuneful.
You will notice that our music is much more Artful. We have dynamic markings (mezzo forte-medium loud, forte-loud, decrescendo-gradually getting softer) and changing articulation (tongue and accent) which make the music come to life.
We are looking forward to sharing our music with you soon!

The SFMS 8th Grade Band has been working in collaboration with the Tri-County New Horizons Band under the direction of director Diana Jonen. We met on March 2nd and March 23rd at SFMS during Falcon Time/Lunch Recess. At our first meeting we introduced ourselves to our guests and were able to get to know each other a bit before rehearsing “Highlights from the Wizard of Oz” and “On Broadway” in the MS Band Room. At our second meeting we rehearsed on the auditorium stage in preparation for our upcoming performance. We are looking forward to sharing our New Horizons Collaborative Concert with all of you on Monday, March 27, 2017 at 7:00 p.m. in the SFMS Auditorium. The public is invited to attend and there is no admission.
Thirty-two SFMS 7th & 8th Band students performed at the WSMA District Solo & Ensemble Festival on Saturday, March 25, 2017. These students performed in a total of thirty-seven events (twenty-four solo and thirteen ensemble) earning thirty-one 1st ratings and six 2nd ratings. Congratulations to all of our musicians!
A rare occurrence at a Solo & Ensemble Festival would be the premier of a new piece of music. The SFMS Jazz Ensemble experienced this incredibly rare opportunity on Saturday, March 25th premiering Mike Venn’s “Blues in SF” written for Carrie Winkler and the Sheboygan Falls Middle School Jazz Ensemble. Mr. Venn was inspired to write this piece during a few SFMS Summer Band Camp sessions where he worked with our trombone students. Both our jazz ensemble and trombone students have been blessed to work with Mr. Venn on numerous occasions. We hope to continue this incredible collaboration.
Thank you to all of our parent and student volunteers who assisted with Set-Up, Information Table, Festival Headquarters, Room Chairperson, Door Monitor, Results Runner, Floater, and Tear-Down duties.
Thank you to the SFHS Music Boosters for providing a Concession Stand featuring breakfast and lunch items for our performers, families, and friends!
Thank you to Amy Lawrenz, SDSF Food Service Supervisor for orchestrating a light breakfast as well as lunch for our adjudicators, directors, and accompanists.

8th Grade Band students are busy writing melodies for Asha Srinivasan!! The top 10 melodies from both Sheboygan Falls Middle School and C.S. Porter MS in Missoula, Montana will be sent to Ms. Srinivasan. She will take ideas from both schools and embellish and develop them as her own and create a new work for us to be premiered at our Spring Concerts in May!! Pretty cool, huh??
