There are exciting things happening at SFES as we shift our lens to the experience our students have each day. First graders in Mr. Hoes class had a chance to experience the jungle as they worked on their related artwork. They\u00a0created their Bengal tiger and rare white tiger artworks during class. As students were creating,\u00a0Mr. Hoes played jungle music, provided photograph models, and created a construction paper jungle to give students inspiration on their journey!\u00a0Students experienced what it would be like to be a tiger and inhabit a jungle complete with surrounding vines, a dimly lit tree canopy, and some thumping jungle music! The tigers never looked better….they were GRRRRRRRRReat! These experiences are what SFES staff members are striving to create for our students. Continue to watch for more universally designed experiences at SFES!<\/div>\n

Donors Chose Mrs. Koene!<\/div>\n
DonorsChoose.org is an organization that provides teachers with the opportunity to request resources from donors for their students in order to provide experiences within the classroom. Anyone can donate to a project. As of today, four of the projects that Mrs. Koene has submitted have been fully funded. The projects that Mrs. Koene has submitted range from providing fidgets and flexible seating options for students to asking for donors to purchase books to be used for a summer reading incentive program. Every Thursday morning before school, students at SFES have the opportunity to participate in Take Time Thursday. In this program, students are introduced to stress management strategies such as movement breaks, art therapy, calming music techniques, deep breathing, and stretching of the body. The purpose of the Take Time Thursday program is to reduce stress, increase self-regulation, and enhance student performance and well-being. 1) Start with serving size<\/div>\n
\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Once you have a clear sense of what the listed serving size, think about how much you might eat in one setting and change the rest of the numbers to determine the actual calorie and nutrient amounts you will ingest.<\/div>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0When you have calculated the actual number of calories you might consume in a serving, think about how that fits in with the rest of the calories you will take in that day as well as how many calories you might burn through physical activity.<\/div>\n

The minerals and vitamins help round out a healthy diet by protecting against disease while helping to maintain metabolism.<\/div>\n

5) Keep it in Perspective<\/div>\n
\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0The % DV (Daily Value) is the percent of each nutrient in a single serving in terms of the daily recommended amount, based upon consuming 2000 calories daily. Without this clue the rest of the numbers might not help that much as it can be hard to remember the recommendations on the average amounts a person should consume.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

A Community Conversation was held in early March to open lines of communication with interested community members about mental health and wellness.<\/strong><\/div>\n
\n
On Monday March 6, the District hosted “Think Haus,” an initiative of Lakeland University to engage in community conversations. The evening’s topic was mental health and wellness and the importance of information and community involvement in finding support for those affected. The event was held at the Sheboygan Falls Memorial Library and was open to the public.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n

Christie Gause-Bemis, a Department of Public Instruction education consultant, spoke with an interested crowd of approximately 30 community members. Ann Roy, director of student services, co-presented. Gause-Bemis underscored the importance of community involvement.<\/p><\/div>\n

\n
\n
As more and more school districts and communities become increasingly aware of the need for more mental health services, the District is seeking to be proactive and open up lines of communication as it seeks community collaboration.<\/div>\n
To guide its efforts, amongst other things, the District\u00a0 completed the State of Wisconsin’s Mental Health Assessment of the District.\u00a0\u00a0Using the results, a core committee of staff members, working with Ann Roy, have identified five core priorities for the District, including:<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
1.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Help all staff learn more about mental health, including mental illness and mental wellness.<\/div>\n
2.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Identify and “map” system-wide resources that exist to address mental health issues.<\/div>\n
3.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Provide opportunities for all students to learn more about mental health.<\/div>\n
4.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Implement mental health wellness curriculum.<\/div>\n
5.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Develop a clear and consistent referral process, including referral to outside resources.<\/div>\n
\nRoy also presented to the Board of Education earlier in April about this topic.\u00a0Roy presented these priorities and other detailed information to the Board of Education about the mental health issues affecting the schools. She explained the actions that have been taken already and discussed possible future actions. The presentation was intended to provide the Board with an in-depth look at this issue as the District plans its next steps.<\/div>\n
