A message from Mr. Luke Goral, High School Principal<\/strong><\/div>\n

We all have heard about the current and future skills gap and the need for skilled workers in our country and Sheboygan County. A few years ago when this was really hitting the media and I was hearing it more and more from local businesses, I wondered …how this could be? How, with such high unemployment could there be such a need for workers?<\/p>\n

After meeting with and visiting numerous companies in our county, I clearly understood what this meant. They don’t just need workers, they need skilled workers. Workers who can collaborate, problem solve and are willing to be lifelong learners. The advancements in manufacturing and the jobs that are available in our own backyard\u00a0are amazing to me.<\/p>\n

A recent article in U.S. News and World Report stated that “U.S. manufacturing employs more than 12 million workers directly, recent figures<\/a>from the Bureau of Labor Statistics show. There remain, however, about 600,000 skilled manufacturing jobs unfilled” and “if we can’t fill the skills gap, it’s going to be very difficult to be competitive in the global market.”<\/p>\n

This past week, Sheboygan Falls High School hosted a career exploration event here at school for our entire freshman class. All ninth graders had the opportunity to hear from and question Kohler employees in relation to 10 different career\"Kohler areas ranging from hospitality to manufacturing and engineering.<\/p>\n

The common themes I hear from all local companies is their willingness to train employees and their commitment to help their employees advance their education. When I say education, I mean a free technical and\/or college education. So, if your child is undecided or unsure of how he or she going to pay for college, I want you to know that there \"Kohlerare many great opportunities at local companies that value and reward employees. I encourage you to get on to Career Cruising and Inspire Sheboygan County (see article below) with your child and explore what is out there.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n\n\n\n

Speakers from over 20 area businesses met with seniors on\"\"\u00a0\u00a0 December 4 for the third annual English 12 Career Symposium. The event is one of the pivotal components of the school-to-work focus of the English 12 class. From small owner operator to home based businesses to major global corporations, the speakers presented students with general information about what working in various fields entails, such as specific job skills and aptitudes as well as education required.\"\" \"\"<\/p>\n

Career Cruising: An Extremely Valuable Tool for Your Child<\/strong><\/span><\/td>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n\n\n\n
Career Cruising<\/strong> is new to our high school this year and brings with it a variety of career exploration opportunities for our students. All of our high school students have completed the Matchmaker Assessment which matches your student’s interests with careers. Students can explore hundreds of careers and post-secondary institutions. All high school students can assess this resource and have a login and password. For Parents: What is Career Cruising?<\/a>Through Career Cruising, students can also access the tool Inspire Sheboygan County<\/strong>, which provides students with opportunites to connect with local businesses and careers associated with those businesses. Students have access to career coaches and job shadows\u00a0in their career areas of interest. Adventure Experience Course<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Starting second semester, there will be a new physical education class starting that will incorporate skills needed to pursue outdoor and indoor adventures and promote life-long fitness.\u00a0Some of these activities include, skiing, geocaching, hiking\/back packing, kayaking, canoeing, camping, fly fishing, biking, orienteering, rollerblading and high and low challenge course elements.\u00a0 If your son or daughter is signed up for this course, there will be a number of\u00a0Saturday\/Sunday\u00a0optional field trips.\u00a0The cost of these trips will not be covered by the school: \u00a0Night candlelight hike\/ski at Terry Andrae State Park, Laser tag at CMT in Milwaukee, downhill skiing at Sunburst in Kewaskum and cross country skiing day trip to Greenbush.\u00a0 Please keep in mind that these are great opportunities for our high school students and they will be supervised activities.The physical education department is looking to borrow 4 kayaks to use for instruction in our HS pool prior to going to camp Y-Koda in April.\u00a0Please contact Cindy Dorn at the HS\u00a0(920 467-7890<\/a>) if you would be willing to lend us your kayaks.\u00a0Also any parents with experience in adventure activities that would like to come to the HS and share their knowledge or do a presentation\/talk on their outing we would love to have you visit.<\/p>\n

High School can a difficult time for many young men and women. The dynamics of teenage relationships are constantly changing and shifting. That was true when adults were in school and has now accelerated in today’s age of social media. A strong friendship can end over an Instagram picture or a tweet and teenagers who were once inseparable are now mortal enemies with the ability to insult and harass each other electronically from anywhere at any time.
