Thank you for a terrific start to the final year at 101 School Street! I hope everyone is enjoying this fabulous time of year! Below are two important notes for everyone.<\/div>\n
1. How has the one to one chrome-book initiative helped all students become more invested in their learning? As the middle school transitions from a Response to Intervention (RtI) framework to a Universal Design for Learning (UDL) framework, what does that mean? Take a look at this 4 minute 33 second video to learn more about what UDL is and how teachers strive to meet the needs of ALL children within the universal classroom.<\/div>\n

2. On\u00a0October 23rd, all students enrolled in grades 7 and 9 took the Wisconsin\u00a0Online\u00a0Youth Risk Behavior Survey (OYRBS),\u00a0unless parents have opted their child out. The School District of Sheboygan Falls\u00a0will use the survey results to help measure how many youth engage in\u00a0risk behaviors. From there, the survey results will then be used to create school programs to help reduce these risk behaviors and promote health enhancing behaviors.<\/div>\n
Q: What does the OYRBS measure and why are these things important?<\/div>\n
A: The OYRBS focuses on\u00a0health-related behaviors\u00a0that result in the most significant mortality, morbidity, and social problems during both adolescences and adulthood. These include: 1) behaviors that result in unintentional and intentional injuries; 2) tobacco use; 3) alcohol and other drug use; 4) sexual behaviors that may result in HIV infection, other sexually transmitted diseases, and unintended pregnancies; 5) dietary behaviors; and 6) physical activity. The OYRBS measures student attitude and perceptions related to\u00a0health-related behaviors. In addition, the OYRBS measures assets and these assets have the power to protect youth from engaging in risk behaviors and at the same time promote healthy behaviors.\u00a0 More information is available on the\u00a0Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction<\/a>\u00a0website.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

1985 LIBRARY RENOVATION<\/strong><\/div>\n
Begun in the spring of 1985, the first phase of the multi-part renovation of the Sheboygan Falls Middle & Elementary School included a complete remodel of the library facilities. As former Superintendent, Norman Frakes, explained in an October 1985 Falls Newsletter, “The selection of [the library] was a natural one as the entire school population would benefit by the needed improvements.” The phase was completed by the fall of 1985. It boasted a separate K-2 section (now the library computer lab) and a grade 3-8 section. Before the remodel, the space had been used for business ed. and typing classrooms. Originally, the space was the location of the gym.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

REPORT CARDS ARE GOING DIGITAL<\/strong><\/div>\n

In an effort to cut printing and mailing costs, the district will no longer be mailing report cards.\u00a0 Report cards will be posted to your Infinite Campus Parent Portal and you will be able to print the report card from there.\u00a0 The first quarter report cards will be posted no later than November 17th.\u00a0 When report cards are posted, an Infinite Campus message will go out to all parents through e-mail and your parent portal message inbox.<\/div>\n\n\n\n

According to the CDC, 40% of Children aged 5-17 miss 3 or more school days in a year due to illness or injury. Overall, nearly 22 million school days are lost each year due to colds alone, and 38 million school days are lost due to the flu.<\/p>\n

-teach your children to how to properly wash their hands<\/div>\n

One of the exciting changes this year at the middle school is our Wednesday Falcon Time Advisement Period. Staff members are serving as advisers to their Wednesday Falcon Time students to help build better relationships and connections to our school community. In addition, during our Wednesday Falcon Time periods, students and staff will partake in lessons, activities and discussions with a focus on creating a better sense of belonging and community. Each Wednesday of the month has a different theme. The themes are: Academic and Career Planning, Mental Health & Well-Being, Character Traits and Community Circles. The pictures above are from a class that was participating in a cooperation character trait activity on October 18th. DATE SET FOR REQUIRED HUMAN GROWTH & DEVELOPMENT ADVISORY COMMITTEE MEETING<\/strong><\/div>\n
Wisconsin Statute 118.019 states that school districts that offer human growth and development must have an advisory committee appointed by the school board and composed of parents, teachers, school administrators, pupils, health care professionals, members of the clergy and other residents of the school district to advise on the design and implementation of the human growth and development curriculum\u00a0and to review the curriculum. Although not included in the current statute, to keep the Human Growth and Development curriculum current, a regular review of the curriculum is recommended at least every three years.<\/div>\n
\nCommunity and staff members are invited to the advisory meeting on\u00a0November 13, 2017, from\u00a05:00 to 6:00 p.m.\u00a0at the SFMS library.
