Have you heard about #Inktober? This is a daily drawing challenge in the
month of October. Each day there is a word that is given, and you may only
use INK (pen, marker, fine point Sharpies, etc.) to illustrate your
interpretation of that word. Search #Inktober on social media for
examples!! Interested? See Mrs. Fischer for a sheet. If you
participate, show all 31 drawings to Mrs. Fischer after Halloween for a
small prize!

**7th graders, there are Inktober prompts on your neighborhood bulletin
board.

If you signed up for Dance Team, our first practice is Monday, October 21
right after school until 4:15. Meet in Mrs. Cotter’s room (247) at the end
of the day in your workout clothes. Be sure to have all of your forms in
and fees paid before this day! Our parent meeting will be Thursday,
October 17 at 4:15 and should only take 15-20 minutes. This will be held in
MS Commons.

*Week of October **7th*

Today is the first Week of Bullying Prevention Awareness Month. We are
joining schools all across the country in raising awareness for the fight
against bullying. Our theme this week is “Falls is a Safe Place to be
Yourself”. This theme was chosen to emphasize the importance of celebrating
our diversity and to remind each of us how important it is to accept one
another and to treat each other with respect. Thank you to everybody who
doesn’t judge one another based on our looks. Together, we can continue to
keep our school safe and welcoming for all! We invite everyone to wear
black every Wednesday during October to represent us taking a stand against
bullying! Have a great week!

From your school nurse:

Quality nutrition and physical activity are essential for optimal growth,
development, and well-being. The global shift in diet intake of foods that
are high in fat and sugar but low in nutrients has contributed greatly to
childhood obesity.

The immediate and long-term effects of overweight and obesity impact the
physical, emotional, and social health of children and adolescents and
places them at a higher risk for the following health conditions (CDC,
2016a; Hoelscher, Kirk, Ritchie, & Cunningham-Sabo, 2013; NIH, 2017):

· high blood pressure and high cholesterol (cardiovascular disease);

· breathing problems such as asthma and sleep apnea;

· type 2 diabetes, impaired glucose tolerance, insulin resistance;

· fatty liver disease, gallstones, gastro-esophageal reflux;

· psychological problems such as anxiety and depression;

· joint and musculoskeletal disorders;

· poor self-esteem and quality of life;

· social problems such as bullying; and

· some cancers
