A Message from the Principals

Welcome to Winter!

This time of year brings several themes that involve thinking about the experience of others, and our own well-being. February is Black History Month, Heart Health Awareness Month, and Friendship Month (our version of Valentine’s Day celebrations).

As a school community, we encourage students to develop their self and social awareness, self-reflection and responsible decision-making (which are several of the social-emotional competencies). These are lifelong skills that you can support at home, too. We encourage you to have conversations about your safety plan and wellness choices as a family. Your engagement with your child’s growth and learning means the world to them!

Thank you for your partnership in our school community,

Lynn & Jen

Board of Education Updates

The School District of Sheboygan Falls holds its monthly regular board meetings on the third Monday of the month at 6:00 pm. Come join us on Monday, February 19th! You can find more information about upcoming meetings, your Board Members and more HERE.

Safety Update

We help students prepare for drills using this conversation SLIDE DECK. Students do a great job learning about where to go in an emergency and practicing making safe choices.  Our drill for February is a medical drill.  While students do not have an active role in this drill, they can learn their part in keeping hallways clear for medical professionals, and also think about their safety plan at home.  Have you talked about what to do in a medical emergency in your family?

Excellence in Education Nominations

Due: Monday, February 5th

We are excited to announce that twenty-four school districts are partnering with Channel 5 to recognize exceptional school employees in a program called the “Eastern Wisconsin Excellence in Education” awards. This program is similar to the “Golden Apple” and “Shining Stars” programs in Green Bay and the Fox Valley.

This program allows parents, students, community members, and staff to nominate deserving school employees in the following categories:

  • Innovation in work (How has the employee demonstrated innovation in his/her work area?)
  • Culture creator in the work environment (How has the employee gone above and beyond in creating a positive school culture?)
  • Social/emotional well being (How has the employee impacted the social/emotional well being of students and/or the school environment?)
  • Community involvement (How has the employee positively impacted the community?)
  • Student connection (In what ways has the employee built positive relationships with students?)

NOMINATIONS (FORM LINKED HERE) need to be submitted by February 5th, 2024. Following the submission deadline, a panel of judges will review each nomination to determine finalists. These finalists will then be asked to elaborate on the work outlined in the nomination. The judges will then select the award recipients in each of the five categories.

The awards show ceremony will be held on Saturday, May 18th, 2024 at the Kiel Area School District Performing Arts Center. The program will be live streamed on the Channel 5, WeAreGreenBay.com website.

A Message from the Principals

And just like that, it’s Holiday Break!

Thank you for your continued engagement with your student(s) in whatever way works for your family.  We enjoy seeing you for in-person events (such as our wonderful Holiday Sing-Along), but engagement takes so many more forms.  We are delighted to watch our SFES learning community engage in new ways on our journey this year, and YOU are a big part of that.

We hope you will continue to celebrate pieces that come home with your child, including pieces of their work, notes or information about what they are learning, and opportunities for your child(ren) to show you what they are learning at school (such as Bridges family connections).  Your enthusiasm, encouragement, and engagement for learning means the world to them … and to us!

We wish you a restful break, filled with time to visit with friends and family, play, connect, and just “be.”

Warmly,

Lynn & Jen

You’ve likely heard recent conversation around the child care challenges facing our community. The United Way of Sheboygan County is part of a cross-sector team working to address child care challenges in the County. A Message from the Principals

A huge thank you to our families who found ways to engage with their child’s education this fall! Whether you talked about math at home after a unit communication, attended Title activities or parent conferences, volunteered to sort literacy materials, or just asked your child about their week, your engagement matters (to us AND especially to your child).

We have plenty of additional engagement opportunities coming up, including our wonderful community tradition of a Holiday Sing Along.  We will gather in the Middle School gymnasium this year to give more space to our families.  Remember to wear your PJs, bring a blanket, and your singing voice! Falcon Families PTO group will sell pizza, nachos and beverages (to be enjoyed in the commons area).  We hope to see you for this sing along / mini-performance on Tuesday, December 19th at 6:00 PM in the Middle School gym (more information below).

We have a few other school-wide student engagement activities for December (see our events section below) and hope you will continue to ask your child about what they are reading, seeing, hearing and participating in each day at school.  Happiest of Holidays to all of our families and our extended community. We appreciate you each and every day of the year!

Wisconsin DPI School Report Card

We are so very proud of our students and staff on our continuing “Exceeds Expectations” designation on our Wisconsin DPI State Report Card.  This data comes from a variety of data pieces, such as attendance, behavior, and most importantly, academic achievement and growth.

These past couple of years have seen us adopting new curriculum materials and focusing on our Universal Instruction (instruction for ALL kids).  This focus has helped our students grow 20% in math over the past two years! We are excited to learn and grow in our literacy instruction, as well.  We are so grateful to our families for your support and enthusiasm for learning at home!

In Case of a School Cancellation …

As communicated earlier this month and as we get closer to potential inclement weather, we would like to reiterate our plan in case of a school cancellation. See HERE for details.

Holiday Sing Along

We are excited for our upcoming Holiday Sing Along! All students are invited to wear pajamas or Christmas attire and be ready to raise their voices together on Tuesday, December 19th at 6:00 in the Middle School gym. Families are invited to bring a blanket to spread out on the gym floor and snacks. Everyone will be sitting with their families while we all raise a joyful noise together. Students will also be invited up to sing a couple songs as a mini Christmas concert. We can’t wait to see you there!

NOTE: Falcon Families of SFES will be providing pizza, nachos, soda, and water for purchase. Please bring cash! Food will be sold and enjoyed in the cafeteria.

Falcon Families News and A BIG Thank You

Special Thank You to Falcon Families (which includes YOU!)

Recently, Falcon Families donated a large amount of Scholastic Dollars to our classroom engagement libraries.  “An engagement library, what’s that?,” you ask.  Engagement libraries are classroom libraries curated to motivate our students to read for pleasure, creating stronger foundation for reading through exposure, vocabulary, and just enjoyment for reading.  Many of our classroom libraries have dated books that teachers have collected over the years.

While ALL books have a place, there is nothing like a new book from a contemporary children’s author to excite our budding readers.  Examples include Gerald and Piggy, Pigeon, Cool Beans books, Pete the Cat, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, and more!  A HUGE thank you to Falcon Families for this donation toward building stronger and more motivated readers in our school.

If YOU made a purchase at the Book Fair, then thanks to YOU, as well! Every purchase you make helps Falcon Families build Scholastic Dollars, used for projects like the classroom engagement libraries, weekly readers (which many students and families love), and fulfilling teacher wish lists for their classroom.  Thank you!  You matter!

A Message from the Nurses

Cold and flu season is here once again. Here are a few friendly reminders of ways to stay healthy and protect yourself and others from getting sick.

  • If you and/or your child is sick, especially with a fever, stay home to avoid putting others at risk.
  • Remind kids to cover coughs and sneezes and avoid touching their eyes, nose and mouth. Germs spread easily this way.
  • Wash your hands often!  Washing with soap and water removes germs, including respiratory viruses, from your hands. Hand sanitizers are also effective for reducing the spread of illness.
  • If you or your family members have symptoms of COVID, you can obtain free test kits available at many pharmacies.

Wishing you a safe and healthy holiday season!

A Message from the Principals

What a successful and eventful “school launch” season it has been! Hopefully you are hearing about literacy and math routines as well as classroom community pieces that help your child feel connected and confident. New family engagement pieces this year include math unit standards sheets to help you learn about your child’s progress and see their math growth along with upcoming literacy pieces connected to our new literacy materials.

In addition to academic connections, we are almost to that very busy season filled with celebrations and community! Between now and then, you might hear about extra opportunities to engage with school, including supporting the literacy room, getting involved with Falcon Families, or just modeling enthusiasm for school and social connections.

Thank you for joining us on our learning journey in whatever way that helps you stay engaged. It means so much to your child and to us!

Calendar Changes:

2024-25 and 2025-26 School Years

In June of 2023, a group of teachers and staff met to discuss potential changes to the academic calendar, with a goal of maximizing student and teacher engagement in learning and instruction.

Important Proposed Changes:

  • No early dismissal on Wednesdays
  • 4K program will run Monday through Thursday

A Message from the Principal

Happy Spring (and almost Summer!) to All, as we walk through this joyful time of year, I’d like to thank the Falcon Families group for their support of Field Trips and Experiences for our students.  I encourage families to get involved in this group as every student in our building benefits from their work and it is a great way to connect with other Falcons!  Our first meeting in Fall is set for Thursday, September 14th at 6:15 PM in our SFES library, mark your calendars now.

Thank you for an amazing year of learning for both children and adults.  We are so fortunate to have your partnership.  Happy Summer!

Safety Update

Everyone is starting to gear up to wave to the buses and cars on the last day of school! This is a tradition that extends so far back that even some moms and dads might remember it from their time at SFES. Please continue to encourage your child(ren) to stay in their seatbelt and refrain from hanging from windows or sunroofs. As fun as it is, our parking lot is a busy place, and we want everyone to safely enjoy their final “wave” into summer!

Thank you for helping us model safety, even on the last day of school.

Attendance Matters

At this time of year, we have an increase of families who have reached the number of absences necessary for an attendance letter.  Please know that we expect developing children to have some absences in their elementary school years as their immune systems develop!  We have amazing families, and we thank you for your partnership in fostering excellent school attendance.

Check out this FAQ document or click below for more information on Wisconsin Attendance law. This state statute exists to help families with attendance awareness, and to prompt positive solutions to attendance, as needed.

A Message from the Nurses

STUDENTS WHO HAVE MEDICATION AT SCHOOL – END OF YEAR PROCEDURE:

A reminder that you are expected to pick up your child’s medication at the end of the school year. Unless the student’s medication form indicates that they may carry and administer their own medication (EPI pens, inhalers, emergency medications, etc.), the student may not transport their own medication home. Medication must be picked up prior to the last day of school (June 8th). We cannot store any medication over the summer.

If you do not want the medication remaining, or have any questions, please email Nurse Amber or Nurse Deanna.

Thank you all for helping us successfully make it through another school year!!

A Message from the Principal

As we head into the last leg of our school year, our goal is to finish strong! Spring is when we see that extra “bump” of growth from our students, so be sure to take a moment to celebrate with your child(ren).  It is also time to think about summer reading and ways to keep math alive this summer (cooking and home projects, anyone?).  THANK you for your partnership, always.  Happy Spring!

Reminder: Class Placement for 2023-24

While we still have a lot of learning to do for the 2022-23 school year, it is time to start thinking about our class lists for the fall. If you wish to provide input on your child as a learner, there is information contained HERE to guide you. Our staff work hard to create diverse class lists with all types of learners in each classroom and we assign class lists to teachers in late summer.

Safety Update

April is Severe Weather/Tornado Awareness Month.  SFES conducted our drill on Friday, April 21st, in accordance with the statewide drill.  April is a good time to consider your severe weather plan at home and have a quick chat with your family, so everyone knows what to do.  For more information, check out this resource from Ready Wisconsin.
