Single Referendum Question Proposed to Address Critical Needs & School Improvements

As previously communicated, there will be a single referendum question on the April 1, 2025 ballot addressing the most urgent space and critical capital improvement needs at the elementary school and the safety, aging building systems, and outdated, inefficient learning spaces at the high school.

In direct response to voter feedback, the revised facilities plan has been reduced to a not-to-exceed total project cost of $70 million. The School Board has eliminated the second question proposed in November 2024, which included building a new auxiliary gym, new multi-sport field, and new track for $21.5 million. They have also reduced the first question focused on elementary and high school improvements by more than $8 million by removing space for childcare and further prioritizing projects at both buildings.

The proposed $70 million project includes the highest-priority projects, focused on providing space at the Elementary School, investing in existing buildings, and improving learning environments.

In February, our safety drill focused on evacuation and relocation. This type of drill could be used for a water break, electrical issue, or another mechanical malfunction.  The drill consisted of the ES students walking over to the MS gym.  Students and staff did a great job practicing this drill!

It was great to see so many families during our February 13th conferences. This was a good time for teachers and parents to check in on how their child is doing and also to learn how they can finish the year strong. 

We also had two amazing concerts on February 20th! 2nd and 4th graders demonstrated their musical talents on the High School stage under the direction of Mrs. Haines. So many families were in the audience representing SFES well! Bravo to all!

The inter-district public school Open Enrollment program allows parents to apply for their children to attend public school in a school district other than the one in which they reside or to remain in their current district in the event that they move out of the district before the start of the 2025-26 school year (Moving? See HERE for more information on remaining in the District through the school year). Open Enrollment will allow student(s) to continue attending school in the School District of Sheboygan Falls. Please call Lisa Berg at 920-467-7893 for additional information or check the Department of Public Instruction Website at: https://dpi.wi.gov/open-enrollment (also check the 2025-26 Open Enrollment Regular Application Period Brochure).

There is no tuition cost for students participating in the Open Enrollment program, but parents are responsible for transporting their student(s) to and from school.

The open enrollment period for the 2025-26 school year is from February 3rd until 4:00 p.m. on April 30th, 2025.   

Applications must be done on the DPI (Department of Public Instruction) website at https://dpi.wi.gov/open-enrollment. A link to this site will also be available on the school web site during the application period at: www.sheboyganfalls.k12.wi.us. The DPI website will be active from February 3rd until 4:00 p.m. on April 30th, 2025.  

If you anticipate a possible move out of the School District of Sheboygan Falls, please complete the Open Enrollment application as soon as possible. You have the right to cancel your application at any time and are not bound to enrollment. If you are currently attending under a Tuition Waiver, you will need to complete an Open Enrollment application for the upcoming school year.

As the weather starts to get warmer, we are reminded that spring allergy season is just around the corner.  Cold symptoms are often similar to allergy symptoms.  Below is a good reference to help determine whether symptoms are cold- or allergy-related which will assist in determining effective treatment.

Thank you for your partnership and engagement this fall semester! 

The mid-point of the school year brings a renewed sense of growth for our students, as routines have been established and confidence in our classroom and school jobs soar.  We continue to focus on The Energy Bus theme with our students, with another student assembly coming up in the New Year.  In September and October, we created a positive vision; in November and December, we fueled our ride with positive energy; and we will begin 2025 by focusing on our positive behaviors toward others (No Bullies Allowed!).  We can’t wait to experience this next assembly with all of our “passengers” (students).  Get on the Energy Bus!

We wish each of you a happy and healthy winter break, filled with time for memories and time to recharge.  See you in 2025!

In December we practiced our third fire drill for the school year, taking the opportunity to practice increasing degrees of difficulty.  This time, Officer Rick blocked an exit to get our brains thinking about the safest ways to evacuate the building while remaining flexible in various situations.  Do you have a fire safety plan at home?

On Thursday, January 30th, we will welcome our newest Falcons and their families for 4K Preview & Registration Night.  Do you know a future Falcon? We are focusing on how being respectful fuels our positive energy everywhere: in our classrooms, and in our relationships with others.  Ask your child about our Thanksgiving Week Assembly centered around these topics and get on the Energy Bus (beep beep!).

In November, we conducted our monthly fire drill.  We also took some time during our November staff in-service to reflect and learn about our October Building Safety (ALICE) Drill.  We continue to learn from our experiences and apply that learning to future professional development and planning around school safety.

We have had many in-person engagement opportunities this fall, and are grateful for the wonderful response. If you couldn’t join in person for Title Week, Donuts with GrownUps, or Parent Conferences, there are always additional opportunities coming up.  Our SFES School Community Sing-Along is a great way to feel the warmth of connection and engagement each year.  This brief event is happening at our Middle School Gym once again (for more room, safety and comfort) on Tuesday, December 17th at 6:00 PM.  We hope you can join us. Be sure to wear your holiday pajamas!

If in-person engagement isn’t possible right now, you can still engage with your child’s education! Here is a brief list of questions to ask your children about their learning, because sometimes asking “how was your day?” or “what did you learn?” might be a vast question for children:

• What book did you like from your Interactive Read Alouds this week or month and why?
• Can you teach me how to play one of your math center games?
• What game, project, song, or skill are you working on in one of your Related Studies (music, art, PE, library, school counseling)?  Can you teach it to me?
• Which friend do you enjoy sitting with or playing with the most and why?
• What problem did you solve (or help solve) today?  How did that help you or someone else?

Every year, the state’s Department of Public Instruction (DPI) reports student achievement, attendance, and graduation rates with publication of school and district report cards. 

On November 19th, the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction released the 2023-24 Report Cards. The School District of Sheboygan Falls was placed in the category of Exceeds Expectations with a score of 70.7, while the individual schools in the district received the following ratings as a result of their performance:

Sheboygan Falls Elementary School: 73.7 Exceeds Expectations

Sheboygan Falls Middle School: 62.1 Meets Expectations

Sheboygan Falls High School: 78.9 Exceeds Expectations

Is it a Cold or Flu?

As the weather is getting colder, flu season is fast approaching.  It is important to recognize the difference between a common cold and the flu. Both are respiratory illnesses, but they are caused by different viruses. Their symptoms are similar so it can be difficult to tell the difference between them.

Generally, the flu is worse than a cold with more intense symptoms. Symptoms include fever, chills, cough, sore throat, muscle aches, runny or stuffy nose, headaches, and fatigue.

Individuals with colds are more likely to have a runny or stuffy nose and generally colds do not result in serious health problems, such as pneumonia, bacterial infections, or hospitalizations.

One of the best ways to protect your family is to get the flu vaccine.  Talk to your health care provider about the benefits of getting vaccinated.

Thank you for continuing to find your family’s path to engagement in your child’s learning, whether that is asking about what they are learning, reading or measuring with them, attending school sponsored events, communicating with school, or staying involved in their social practice.  It takes a village, and families are a child’s first teachers; your excitement for learning means the world to them.

Fall is a very exciting time for children, including some of our local traditions, fall sports, music and drama events, and of course, preparations for the holiday season.  As we celebrate these important pieces, we can also provide a sense of stability and predictability for children by following our routines and schedules against the backdrop of fall fun.  Your child’s teachers and counselors are a great resource for ideas if you need help with this piece.  We appreciate your partnership as we all help our students feel ready-to-learn each day! 

For November and December, we move on to another Energy Bus tenet: Fuel Your Ride with Positive Energy! Schoolwide we will focus on how positive thinking and communication improve results in our personal and professional lives.

Finally, fall is also a great time to learn about engagement through our PTO Group, Falcon Families. Our next meeting is Thursday, November 21st from 6:15-7:30 PM in the SFES library.  We would love to have you join to learn more and possibly find a new way to engage with our school community.

Dear Families,

Next week our community will vote on two referendum questions for the School District of Sheboygan Falls. I wanted to take a moment to remind our families and community about our school facility needs and why the Board of Education has decided to propose these two questions as potential solutions.

Question #1 asks voters to approve general obligation bonds in an amount not to exceed $78.3 million. These funds would go toward Elementary and High School improvement projects, including:

• Addition of a Community Fitness Center
• Addition of a 4-year-old kindergarten and childcare space at the Elementary school
• Addition of an expanded career and technical education wing at the high school
• Replacement of basic building systems
• Safety and security upgrades
• Upgrades to educational spaces
• Improvements to building finishes
• Furniture, fixtures, and equipment

If this first question is approved by voters, the estimated annual tax impact would be $1.33 per $1,000 of equalized property value.

Question #2 asks voters to approve general obligation bonds in an amount not to exceed $21.5 million. These funds would go toward recreation and athletic improvement projects, including:

• New auxiliary gymnasium ($14.9 million)
• Improvements to outdoor athletic facilities ($6.6 million) 

If this second question is approved by voters, it would have an estimated annual tax impact of 90 cents per $1,000 of equalized property value.

The approval of both questions would result in a property tax impact of $2.23 per every $1,000 of equalized property value in our community. A home valued at $300,000 would see a property tax impact of $669 per year (or $55.75 per month), starting in the 2024-25 school year.

October was Fire Safety Month, and we once again welcomed our local fire departments (City and Town of Sheboygan Falls) for fire safety education on October 7th.  Have you discussed a fire safety plan for your family at home?  Having a reunification point is a good place to start!

We also held our first Building Safety Drill (ALICE oriented) on October 15th, with support and observation from our School Resource Officer, Rick Allen, and District Safety Coordinator, Mark Thompson.  The learning from this drill will help us plan for staff professional development around this topic with Officer Rick at our November 15th inservice.

Title I Learnings and Visits

Thank you to those family members who were able to join us for Title I Family Days October 21st-25th and 29th.  We had an amazing turnout and a great opportunity for families to see how their children work on ownership in their learning, which leads to confidence and greater academic and social growth!  If you were not able to join us this time, you can learn a bit about Title I and Title III HERE.  In-person engagement is just one way to participate in your child’s education, so stay tuned for other ideas and opportunities.

More Ways to Engage:  Right to Read Act Steps and Fall Screening

We are well on our way to learning and growing in our literacy practice, as well as continued growth in our math practices.  Our student scores are showing our growth, as well, which is a huge celebration for our school community. This fall, we began use of our new, State-designated screening tool, AimsWebPlus.  Your child’s classroom teacher sent math and literacy snapshots out for your student digitaly by October 25th for you to view.  HERE is more information about this tool, the Right to Read Act (also known as Act 20), and how to help your child on their learning journey.

Our fall Parent Teacher Conferences are scheduled for Thursday, November 7th and Thursday, November 14th.  More information can be found HERE.

Whooping Cough (Pertussis)

Pertussis, also called whooping cough, a serious illness, caused by bacteria that attaches to the lining of the lungs. It can infect people at any age, but it is most serious in infants and young children.

Pertussis is known for uncontrollable, violent coughing that often makes it hard to breathe. After coughing, someone with pertussis may need to take deep breaths that result in a “whooping” sound.

Whooping cough can cause pneumonia, which is an infection in the lungs. Half of all babies with whooping cough need care in a hospital.

• As of October 25th, 2024, Wisconsin had 1,289 confirmed cases.
• Sixty counties have had at least one case since January 1, 2024.
• While cases range in age from 1 month to 82 years, just under half (46%) of the cases are individuals aged 11–18 years.
• Fifty-nine infants have been identified with pertussis and nine have been hospitalized.
• No deaths have been reported.

Getting vaccinated is the best way to protect yourself and your loved ones against whooping cough. Here are some other tips on how to protect your family from whooping cough:

• Keep babies and other people at high risk for complications from pertussis away from infected people.
• If you or a member of your household are diagnosed with pertussis, your doctor or local health department may recommend preventive antibiotics for other members of the household. This will help prevent the disease from spreading.
• Practice good hygiene to prevent the spread of all respiratory illnesses, including pertussis. To practice good hygiene you should:
  • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze.
  • Put your used tissue in the waste basket right away.
  • Cough or sneeze into your upper sleeve or elbow, not your hands, if you don’t have a tissue.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
  • Use an alcohol-based hand rub if soap and water are not available.
