A message from Lynn Bub, Elementary School Principal

Greetings, Falcon Families!

Thank you for a strong start to the 2014-2015 school year. We hope you enjoy our new Newsletter format that offers the option of finding all three of our building Newsletters in one space!  Our goal will be to provide you with important dates and examples of how we live our vision, mission, and commitments for kids each day.

As you know, we have been fortunate to welcome some great new staff, including Mr. Mike Nikson, our new Associate Principal at both the elementary and middle schools.  While we strive to stay in touch with all stakeholders in our school community, please feel free to reach out to us when you have questions, comments or concerns.  We look forward to working with you this school year!

Sincerely,

Lynn Bub, Principal

Literacy Development at SFES

Our Elementary Literacy Committee has been hard at work reviewing our current literacy processes and selecting professional development for our elementary staff.  This year, we are working on our spelling process.  Several teachers from a variety of grade levels have chosen to pilot a spelling approach called “Words Their Way.”  This approach uses students’ development in spelling to help them learn word patterns so they can apply their knowledge to more words.

Above the Line Choices
Recess and Volume Levels

Students and staff have been working on improving our learning environment by practicing more efficient recess procedures and “just right” volume levels.  The response to these ideas has been great!  Students are enjoying the “quiet waves” they can give and receive in the hallways without disrupting other classes.  Click here to see the lesson we shared: http://goo.gl/1fd24E

First Grade Civics Lesson
The Importance of Voting

Mrs. Schmitz’s First Graders took part in an election because Nov. 4th is the day to vote. Students learned about elections, ballots and voting at their level. Mrs. Schmitz read two stories (The Three Little Pigs told from the pigs’ point of view and The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs told by the wolf’s point of view). The students then voted on who they believed. The class ballots were totaled and the pig was the winner! Each student received a real “I Voted” sticker thanks to an awesome room parent!

STEAM House News
Its Been an Exciting Fall

Our STEAM House has been very busy this fall. Skyping with an expert on plate tectonics, engineering boats to survive a tsunami, and putting on the critically aclaimed show “Buh Bye Bullies” are just a few of the exciting things happening in the STEAM House.
Collaboration with the High School
SFES first grade students created prototypes for their own bat house designs and SFHS Tech Ed students brought those designs to life in their workshop!  It was an awesome, collaborative STEM activity for all involved!

Author visit with Jesse Klausmeier

On Friday, October 10, our students were treated to a visit with Jesse Klausmeier, author of the book, Open This Little Book.

This visit was in conjunction with the Sheboygan Children’s Book Festival that was held October 10-12 at the John Michael Kohler Arts Center.  Author Klausmeier read her book to students K-4 as well as talked about how she became an author.  Open This Little Book is Jesse Klausmeier’s first published book. After the visit, students created their own “little book” and had an opportunity to share their books with their classmates.
