October, 2017
Greetings!
Each year our school counseling department brings awareness to National Bully Prevention Month in October. This year, awareness was brought to the attention to SFES in a variety of ways. Staff and students throughout the district were encouraged to wear black each Wednesday of the month. SFES families received a letter home about “What bullying is and is not” (please see link below). Mrs. Humski (grades 4K-2 School Counselor) and Ms. Stanke (grades 3-5 School Counselor) incorporated bullying lessons into their weekly CAPSS classes and made weekly announcements related to bully prevention skills. Finally, SFES students created a school wide mural encouraging and reminding each other to do something kind and to brighten up someone’s day. Staff and students wore bright colors the last Friday of October to remind each other of this positive message!
Sincerely,

Lynn Bub
Elementary Principal

Fire Prevention Week

VISIT FROM SFFD
Members of the Sheboygan Falls Fire Department made a special visit to our students during fire prevention week. Students were given the opportunity to see inside of a fire truck, feel what it is like to spray water from the fire hose, learn about the special equipment and gear that firefighters wear, and review the importance of having a family plan in case of a fire emergency. Special thanks to the Sheboygan Falls Fire Department for providing this experience for our students.
Learning Experiences

FLEXIBLE SEATING
Students in Mr. Oetjen’s class are benefiting from flexible seating options courtesy of generous donors from DonorsChoose. This project was created to provide the students with flexible seating options to help fit their needs as learners.
LEARNING AND GROWING
Fourth graders in Mrs. Dippel’s and Mrs. Grunwald’s class explore
math and writing through collaborative work. During Math Daily 3 in Mrs. Grunwald’s class, students took on the role of teaching their peers. In Mrs. Dippel’s class, students
took a stroll around SFES to make
observations. They were on the look out to put the words went, said, and looked to bed with other word choices.

APPLE ORCHARD FUN
The kindergarten classes went to Dutter’s Gibbsville Orchard. They learned about how the apples grow, when they are picked and how they get the apples ready to sell. The children also got to pick their own apple and see the apple orchard while taking a wagon ride. They loved it!
A Note from Our Nurses

According to the CDC, 40% of Children aged 5-17 miss 3 or more school days in a year due to illness or injury. Overall, nearly 22 million school days are lost each year due to colds alone, and 38 million school days are lost due to the flu.

To Stay healthy, parents should:
-keep your children home if they are sick
-teach your children to how to properly wash their hands
-offer children a diet rich in fruits and vegtables
-avoid caffeine and sugary foods

HUMAN GROWTH & DEVELOPMENT ADVISORY COMMITTEE MEETING
Wisconsin Statute 118.019 states that school districts that offer human growth and development must have an advisory committee appointed by the school board and composed of parents, teachers, school administrators, pupils, health care professionals, members of the clergy and other residents of the school district to advise on the design and implementation of the human growth and development curriculum and to review the curriculum. Although not included in the current statute, to keep the Human Growth and Development curriculum current, a regular review of the curriculum is recommended at least every three years.

Community and staff members are invited to the advisory meeting onNovember 13, 2017, from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the SFMS library.

SFES Communicator – September 2017

September, 2017
Greetings!
ABC, Chika, Chika, Boom, Boom – Welcome back to school!
Our first couple weeks have been busy at SFES! Students and teachers have been connecting and jumping back into learning. Whether learning about expected behaviors, classroom routines or even new parking procedures, students, staff and families alike are ‘launching’ into another year of learning and growing at SFES.

Sincerely,

Lynn Bub
Elementary Principal

Launching with Expected Behaviors

ZERO VOICE LINES
The Kindergarten students practiced using level zero voices indicating they are ready to enter the building after recess.
EXPECTED AND UNEXPECTED

Ms. Johnson tours her first grade students on the first day of school to remind them of expected hallway behaviors and how to find the office if they need assistance during the day. All SFES students reviewed expected behaviors for the hallway, playground, cafeteria, and bus. Many thanks for our school counselors, Mrs. Humski and Ms. Stanke for preparing these lessons for our students.

A Note from Our Nurses

We all know that Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. It is also the meal that many students skip. Studies show that students especially teenagers who eat breakfast are more attentive in class, have more energy, and are less likely to be overweight than their peers who don’t eat breakfast. So, grab some cereal, yogurt, a piece of fruit, protein bar, or a peanut butter sandwich and have the best learning possible this school year!
Please view the September update from the Sheboygan County Health Department.
Learning Experiences

BUILDING STAMINA
The first few weeks of school are distinct from the rest of the school year. Teachers are working hard to build classroom routines, as well as building their students’ stamina.
As students get back into the routine of school, they should be able to have increased stamina toward working independently in reading, math, and classroom center time.
BOOK-A-DAY CHALLENGE
Mrs. Bub reading to classes as part of Mrs. Bub and Mrs. Pound’s #classroombookaday challenge.  Every day this school year, Mrs. Bub, Mrs. Pound or a special guest, will read a book to one of the SFES classrooms.
IN MEMORY OF FORMER MUSIC TEACHER
Thanks to all who donated to the Kerrie Levenduski Memorial fund last school year.  Kerrie loved her smiley faces and had them all over her classroom.  We were able to purchase four of these ukuleles in her memory.  They will be available to students that want to practice, but can’t afford their own instrument.

Keeping Safety in Mind

NEW PROCEDURES FOR MORNING DROP OFF & AFTER-SCHOOL PICK UP

Many thanks to families for helping us with our two new procedures to help make our parking lots safe for students.  Modeling safe behavior in using the cross walk is much appreciated!

In case you missed our video that describes the two different procedures, check it out on our YouTube channel:  SFES Parent Drop Off and Pick Up

SFES Communicator – May 2017

Tuesday, May 16th, 2017
May, 2017
Greetings!
It is hard to believe that the school year is winding down! For both students and staff members, the year has been focused on learning through experiences.  In Mrs. Loehr’s class (see above photo), students made language, writing, and social gains through the implementation of visual and prompting tools in her classroom because of district-wide learning that a district autism team had shared with staff.  Research tells us that these practices help all children understand expectations and feel confident in their school jobs!

As you will read throughout this newsletter, students have been engaged in learning experiences beyond the classroom and into the community. Our students have been participating in the ABC Countdown to celebrate our year of learning and to help us finish strong.  We are Falcons!

Finally, as a reminder, with summer school starting soon (June 12th), so does construction on the new middle school. Please be mindful that SFES will be impacted too. Throughout the summer, there will be limited access with parking lot changes and the closure of Alfred Miley. All families will have access to the elementary school by using Greenwiew Drive.
Sincerely,

Lynn Bub
Elementary Principal

Community Farm Visit

A Trip to Hanke Farm
The fourth grade students visited Hanke Farm this month. Part of the fourth grade Social Studies curriculum is the study of Wisconsin.  One of the many reasons Wisconsin is so unique is because of the local goods and services that are produced here. Students learned about the goods produced on the farm on and where these products can be found within our community and throughout Wisconsin.  An opportunity to get up-close and personal on the farm enhances learning!
A Note about Fidgets

Students at SFES have access to fidgets within the classroom when necessary. Teachers have taken the time to review fidget expectations so that they are not a distraction to those students who choose not to access them. We have also had teachers such as Mrs. Kluth and Mrs. Koene utilize outside organizations such as DonorsChose.org in order to add further classroom options.
Recently, we have seen an increase in the number of students who have brought fidget spinners from home into the school environment. Unfortunately, these spinners have become more of a distraction within our learning environments. At this time, we are recommending that students keep their fidget spinners at home. They are welcome to use one of the many fidget options within their classroom if they are feeling one would assist with focus and learning. For more information on fidgets in the classroom, please view the link below.

From singing to dancing, the audience got the opportunity to experience the diverse talents of our SFES students. Prior to the start of the talent show, students, family and friends could view living museum performances or view various artwork displayed throughout the school. Many thanks to Mrs. Haines, Mr. Hoes, and Mrs. Stowers for providing our students with this opportunity to showcase their talents.

Enrichment Opportunities

Work with Mrs. Anzia
Mrs. Anzia’s 4th Grade Enrichment group is focusing on analyzing famous historical figures based on various character traits that these individuals possessed as they “Dared to Dream” the impossible.  The students are being asked to research and write a character analysis of the person of their choosing by determining character traits and providing proof of those character traits.  Students are highly engaged in learning about these individuals and are consistently finding ways to “Dare to Dream” themselves!

Learning Experiences

SFES Communicator – April 2017

Tuesday, April 11th, 2017
April, 2017
There are exciting things happening at SFES as we shift our lens to the experience our students have each day. First graders in Mr. Hoes class had a chance to experience the jungle as they worked on their related artwork. They created their Bengal tiger and rare white tiger artworks during class. As students were creating, Mr. Hoes played jungle music, provided photograph models, and created a construction paper jungle to give students inspiration on their journey! Students experienced what it would be like to be a tiger and inhabit a jungle complete with surrounding vines, a dimly lit tree canopy, and some thumping jungle music! The tigers never looked better….they were GRRRRRRRRReat! These experiences are what SFES staff members are striving to create for our students. Continue to watch for more universally designed experiences at SFES!

Sincerely,

Lynn Bub
Elementary Principal

Reminder from Our Nurse

Health Tips on Nutrition from our Nurses:

1) Start with serving size
Once you have a clear sense of what the listed serving size, think about how much you might eat in one setting and change the rest of the numbers to determine the actual calorie and nutrient amounts you will ingest.

2) Calories
When you have calculated the actual number of calories you might consume in a serving, think about how that fits in with the rest of the calories you will take in that day as well as how many calories you might burn through physical activity.

3) Foods to Limit
In general you want low numbers when it comes to fats (especially saturated and trans fat), cholesterol, sugar, and sodium.

4) Foods to Love
Foods that are high in fiber and protein are smarter choices because they will leave you feeling fuller while providing energy. The minerals and vitamins help round out a healthy diet by protecting against disease while helping to maintain metabolism.

5) Keep it in Perspective
The % DV (Daily Value) is the percent of each nutrient in a single serving in terms of the daily recommended amount, based upon consuming 2000 calories daily. Without this clue the rest of the numbers might not help that much as it can be hard to remember the recommendations on the average amounts a person should consume.

Beginning the Conversation in the Community about Mental Health and Wellness

A Community Conversation was held in early March to open lines of communication with interested community members about mental health and wellness.
On Monday March 6, the District hosted “Think Haus,” an initiative of Lakeland University to engage in community conversations. The evening’s topic was mental health and wellness and the importance of information and community involvement in finding support for those affected. The event was held at the Sheboygan Falls Memorial Library and was open to the public.

Christie Gause-Bemis, a Department of Public Instruction education consultant, spoke with an interested crowd of approximately 30 community members. Ann Roy, director of student services, co-presented. Gause-Bemis underscored the importance of community involvement.

As more and more school districts and communities become increasingly aware of the need for more mental health services, the District is seeking to be proactive and open up lines of communication as it seeks community collaboration.
To guide its efforts, amongst other things, the District  completed the State of Wisconsin’s Mental Health Assessment of the District.  Using the results, a core committee of staff members, working with Ann Roy, have identified five core priorities for the District, including:
1.      Help all staff learn more about mental health, including mental illness and mental wellness.
2.      Identify and “map” system-wide resources that exist to address mental health issues.
3.      Provide opportunities for all students to learn more about mental health.
4.      Implement mental health wellness curriculum.
5.      Develop a clear and consistent referral process, including referral to outside resources.
Roy also presented to the Board of Education earlier in April about this topic. Roy presented these priorities and other detailed information to the Board of Education about the mental health issues affecting the schools. She explained the actions that have been taken already and discussed possible future actions. The presentation was intended to provide the Board with an in-depth look at this issue as the District plans its next steps.

SFES Communicator – February 2017

Monday, February 6th, 2017
February, 2017
Here at SFES, our teachers and staff members work hard to not only meet the academic needs of our students, but also their social and emotional needs, too. Throughout the year, Mrs. Humski and Ms. Stanke, our school counselors, have been developing lessons plans called ‘cool tools’ to help students learn about expected and unexpected behaviors. These ‘cool tools’ assist students in understanding the expectations for our learning spaces throughout the building including the playground areas.
SFES staff model the expected and unexpected language for students every day. When a teacher encounters a problem, they may say, “Your behavior was very unexpected, what choice could you have made?” Feel free to ask your child about expected and unexpected behaviors. This universal language can also be easily transferred from school to home.
Sincerely,
Lynn Bub

Middle School Building Construction Update

We are making good progress on the design phase for the new middle school.
Middle School staff members have met with the architects to provide their input into the plans. Several school staff members have visited other school districts to view  new schools and gather input from those school leaders. We meet weekly with the architects to keep plans moving ahead.
The Board of Education is meeting February 6 to review the plans and provide more input. In March, based on the plans for the school, we will be selecting furnishings and equipment.
Our current timeline is:
Now-April: Architectural design
May/June-August 2018: Groundbreaking and construction
August 2018: Open new Middle School
Community Conversation
On January 23, the School District of Sheboygan Falls hosted an open Community Conversation for residents interested in learning more about how the School District will make its future decisions about the existing middle school.

Here is the  press release that you may have seen in The Falls News.
If you have any questions about the progress on the Middle School, questions about the existing middle school, or any other questions about our School District, please contact Superintendent Jean Born or any Board of Education member.  They welcome the opportunity to answer your questions.
Please stay tuned for plans about our groundbreaking, when the time comes!
Supporting Students

Our RtI Team

Response to Intervention (RtI) is a process that helps determine when students need extra support in literacy and math. Our team works with students and teachers on a daily basis to monitor student growth and development. Students who receive special supports may enter and exit this programming based on their personal need throughout their elementary experience. RtI can be for everyone. We are fortunate to have the expertise of Mrs. Salzman, Mrs. Reiter, Mrs. Anzia, and Mrs. Bisterfeldt on our RtI team.
Learning Experiences

MLK DAY
To recognize and celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, students in Mrs. Grunwald’s class read the book, Martin’s BIG Words . Students then discussed the idea that the “big” words MLK used were not big in size, but big in importance. Students then brainstormed important words that represented what they dreamed of for the world. Then students completed a visual picture of their “dream” for the world.
4 K EXPLORES BEMIS
Scott Keuhn from Bemis Manufacturing visited Mrs. Adelman and Mrs. Schliewe’s 4K classes to introduce their students to the products that Bemis produces. Following Mr. Keuhn’s presentation, students connected their learning about manufacturing by participating in activities that focused on developing products. Mrs. Adelman and Mrs. Koene spent a week this summer at Bemis through our externship program.

MAGNETIC PROPERTIES
Students in third grade explored the properties of magnets. As a part of the engineering and design process, students across SFES regularly use a variety instructional materials to explore through STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and math).
NAEP Assessment for Fourth Grade

Dear Fourth Grade Parents,
On February 15th, a group of randomly selected fourth graders will participate in the National Assessment of Educational Performance (NAEP) Assessment. This fourth grade group will represent thousands of other students across the country. Known as the ‘Nation’s Report Card’, NAEP is the largest nationally representative and continuing assessment of what students in the United States know and can do.  NAEP, administered by the National Center for Education Statistics of the U.S. Department of Education, assesses what students know and can do. The NAEP is different from our state assessment, because it provides a common measure of student achievement across the country. To learn more about NAEP, please visit the following links.

Trauma Informed Parenting

SFES Communicator – December 2016

Monday, December 19th, 2016
December, 2016
Literacy continues to be a focus for us this winter at SFES.  Students and teachers alike are enthusiastic about the writing pieces that we have added to our practice.  Research tells us that strong writing skills connects to reading skills and beyond!  Thanks for your partnership and support at home as you model enthusiasm for everyday literacy.
Sincerely,
Lynn Bub

Middle School Building Construction Update

As you are aware, the voters of the School District of Sheboygan Falls
overwhelmingly approved the November 8

referendum question to  build a new middle school on the site adjacent to theSheboygan Falls Elementary School.
What’s next?
Work has begun to detail plans for the new middle school. At a very high level, the general timeline for building the new middle school is:
Now-April: Architectural design
May/June-August 2018: Groundbreaking and construction
August 2018: Open new school
What happens to the existing middle school?
While the existing middle school will continue in use until the new school is opened, a critical part of that plan includes repurposing the current middle school building. First, the Board intends to offer the building for sale. If the building does not sell, it will be demolished and converted into green space. We know neighbors of the existing middle school, staff and others in the community may have questions about this process.
Therefore a Community Conversation, open to all, will be:
January 23, 2017, 6:30 p.m., Middle School Library
Topic: Process and plans for the existing Middle School
At the Community Conversation, we will share more information about the process the Board of Education will follow for the disposition of the existing Middle School and answer questions.
Learning Experiences

We Can Code

Students at SFES having been learning about computer programming during the past couple of months. Mr. Nikson, our Director of Instructional Technology, has been visiting classrooms to teach students about coding through the use of music. Students have been using applications such as Kodable and Bee Bots to experiment with coding in their classrooms.
Learning Beyond the Classroom

FRIENDSHIP FUN
Mrs. Pilgrim’s friendship lunch bunch had a fun time reading the story, Turkey Trouble and making their turkey crafts together. The students shared their funny reasons for saving the turkey such as by eating more bacon!
HELPING HANDS
Some fourth grade students presented Mrs. Bub with the option of helping to clean-up the lunch room as part of a service challenge. These students extended their challenge to their fellow classmates and therefore, developed a lunch room helper schedule.

CLASSROOM PARTNERS
The kindergarten students made gingerbread houses with their reading buddies from third grade. The third graders acted as building supervisors while the kindergarten students built their creations.
Note from our School Nurses

Dear Falcon Parents,
The Sheboygan Falls School District Nurses have been notified by the Health Department that there has been an increase of Pertussis in Sheboygan County. Although we do not have a case in our community, this is a good opportunity to review your immunization records and your child’s immunization records. The Center for Disease Control recommends that children, ages 11 and up (6th grade) and adults, should receive a Tdap booster. It not only gives a tetanus booster but gives a booster of acellular Pertussis.
Please read more about pertussis here:

EMERGENCY INFORMATION FOR PARENTS
Keeping students safe & families informed
On the afternoon of Wednesday, October 26, the district’s safety team and Sheboygan Falls Elementary School staff conducted a small scale reunification drill. The drill involved students and families who had voluntarily agreed to take part in the practice. Students were evacuated to a reunification site while parents received an automated message about the pickup location. Once parents arrived at the site, they were required to show a photo ID and were then reunified with their children. Following the drill, Safety Team members met to debrief the experience and make plans to better the protocol in the safety plan.  Please see the link below to read the Parent Emergency Guide and become familiar with the information provided.

SFES Communicator – September 2016

Monday, September 26th, 2016
September, 2016
We’re off to a great start to the school year.  Be sure to ask your son/daughter about our launch!  The first 4-6 weeks of school, we spend time launching procedures by modeling, practicing, and building stamina.  Examples include launching academic work, like readers/writers workshop or math centers, and regular procedures like efficiently getting ready for lunch.  Taking this time to teach and practice helps students gain confidence and independence in their jobs at school.  It supports each student on their learning path!
Sincerely,
Lynn Bub

Starting early with Literacy

District partners with Memorial Library to promote 1,000 Books Program
Launched by the Sheboygan Falls Memorial Library, 1000 Books Before Kindergarten is part of a national initiative designed to foster and strengthen per-literacy skills in young children. Although children generally learn to read after they start kindergarten, being exposed to books and especially having their parents or other adults read to them helps get them ready to read on their own.

STEAM Education
Rocketing into Science

The 4K students and their third grade buddies were able to launch rockets together. 4K just finished a two week unit on Space. Mr. Russell Hollman, a retired science teacher (and Mrs. Schliewe’s father) came to school and taught the children about rocket launching and how to stay safe.

Shake Rattle and Roll
Second Graders Use the Engineering Design Process

Mrs. Kamke’s second grade students used the Engineering Design Process to create a building that could withstand an earthquake (a pan of jello shaken by Mrs. Kamke). Students used marshmallows and toothpicks and of course their knowledge to create the structures.

Making the Air More Breathable
Celebrating Earth and Arbor Day

Fourth graders received free trees from the DNR to celebrate Arbor Day and Earth Day. They were encouraged to plant the trees to help the environment.

Third Grade Connects with Japan
Third Graders reach out to learn about different cultures.
This picture was taken by third Grade students for their pen pal friends in Japan. This picture was sent to our friends along with our final letters to say thanks for sharing about their culture and their school, John O. Arnn Elementary School, near the Camp Zama facility in Japan.

Students learned much about their friends (favorite food, video game, color, sport, subject, etc), as well as topics being discussed in the classroom.  Despite the distance, it was fun to learn how much in common our students had with their friends in Japan.

Rockin’ Recess
An annual tradition @ SFES

Students had a fun lunch and recess on May 13.  In addition to a DJ playing dance music, there were also a variety of activities to get students moving!

Color Run May 14
Despite the chilly weather and gray skies, the Falcon Families had great response for the Color Run May 14, with over 300 runners and walkers. Many thanks to all involved in planning and volunteering for the event!
