Literacy Instruction at SFES
READO

During the month of March, 2nd grade celebrated Read Across America.  Students were encouraged to participate in a fun month long reading program.  Those who completed their READO sheet received a popcorn piece to add to our pod display and enjoyed tasty popcorn as an added bonus.  This great display was created by Sheboygan Falls High School student Jessiqua St. Onge who is currently working with the second grade as part of her course work.
The first graders did an incredible job with helping the Cat in the Hat grow an amazing hat! The first graders earned a stripe for each book they read at home for the month of March and helped the Cat in the Hat to grow an impressive hat that wound around the entire pod wall! The first graders are celebrating their reading achievement this week with a popcorn party! GREAT job reading first graders!

Next Generation Science Standards in Action
Second Grade Earthquake Design Activity

TheNext Generation Science Standards focus on problem solving and modeling answers to everyday problems. Here a group of 2nd graders are showing off their “Earthquake Resistant” structure they made in science.

Budding Writers
Mrs. Mathieu’s students wrote haiku poetry, and are submitting thier poems to the National Schools Project. As a result of entering the project, the library will receive a free copy of the Young American Poetry Digest.  If they are one of the ten schools submitting the most poems accepted for publication, the school could receive $100!!
The kids had a blast writing their poems, and are excited to share them with a larger audience.
We have lots of talented writers, so we will share the good news when we receive it.

WATCH FOR Strengthening Community. Supporting Our Heroes.
The School District of Sheboygan Falls and members of Chamber-Main Street have joined together to sponsor a community fundraiser to demonstrate support for local families who have suffered from fire tragedy and to support our firefighters for their selfless efforts to protect us all.
The School District of Sheboygan Falls Make a Difference event starts March 21 and focuses on “paying it forward” to our community. As part of Make A Difference, we may see various activities to support this effort. Local Businesses and other groups will continue the activities through July 3. Efforts are under construction as we get the word out.
Also, on March 23, Firehouse Restaurant is donating a portion of their proceeds that day to support the fundraiser. Again, more information is in the works – we will send more details soon!

From the Food Service Department
Silverware:

Spring Cleaning or cleaning out some one’s home? Have old or mismatched forks & spoons? Send them to school! We prefer to use the “real stuff” instead of plastic for a better dining experience. We also feel this will save the landfills from all the plastic this is in part of an Earth Day recycling event.  You can drop in the office of any of our schools.
Garden to Fork:
Did you know that our school district has its own garden and hoop houses? We use the produce throughout the year on our serving lines and our culinary classes also use in their classrooms and caterings that they offer. In the High School our first few months we didn’t have to purchase mu

ch produce outside of the school district, we purchased from the garden on the grounds. This was also enjoyed in the Middle and Elementary Schools too. We also prep the produce in the summer for the freezer and are able to add to our recipes that we make during the year. The meals incorporate fresh, locally grown ingredients whenever possible. Students and parents will be able to note when we are using locally grown produce with the special notation on the menu and also noted right on the serving line. Our students take much pride in producing Garden to Fork produce for everyone

STEAM Education in 4K
4K Partners with Color Craft of Manitowoc
The 4K teachers were given a very nice donation from Color Craft of Manitowoc to purchase materials to be used in our first STEAM project in our classrooms during the month of December.  We each created bakeries for the kids to explore in.  They took turns being customers, bakers, wait staff, and hosts/hostesses.  They loved it!  Thank you, Color Craft!

Scripps National Spelling Bee
Awesome * A-W-E-S-O-M-E!!!

Logan will move on to the Regional Competition

The 3rd and 4th grade students at Sheboygan Falls Elementary School participated in the 2015/2016 Scripps National Spelling Bee.  Every student at these grade levels had an opportunity to experience being a part of a spelling bee as each class narrowed their spellers down to two representatives from each classroom.  The 3rd grade level competition was held on Monday, January 11, and the 4th grade level competition was held on Tuesday, January 12th to determine the top speller from each grade level.  The top speller from 3rd grade was Ariana from Mr. Oetjen’s class, and the top speller from 4th grade was Logan from Mrs. Ehrhardt’s class. The School-Wide Championship Competition took place on Friday, January 15. Both Ariana and Logan did a magnificent job.  A huge congratulations goes out to Logan who will be representing Sheboygan Falls Elementary School on Monday, February 1, at the Regional Competition for Sheboygan County. Congratulations to all spellers from 3rd and 4th grade, and we wish you the best of luck at Regionals, Logan!

Keeping Our Students Safe

Daily 5 Listen to Reading

One of the most important responsibilities our district has is to keep our students safe. In this day and age Internet safety is a major concern for schools and parents, so we wanted to share the curriculum we have in place to teach students how to be safe and appropriate in the online environment.
Provided below is the SFSD K-12 online safety curriculum as well as resources for families to learn more about age appropriate Internet usage and best practices.

School Board Seeks Community Input
The School District of Sheboygan Falls is seeking district residents to volunteer for a Facilities Advisory Committee (FAC). The role of the committee is to provide meaningful input to the Sheboygan Falls Board of Education as the Board analyzes  potential solutions for the Sheboygan Falls Middle School. The committee will also provide specific input on the district-wide, long-range capital replacement priorities. It is anticipated that the committee will meet no more than six (6) times between January and April 2016.  Read more.

Innovation at the Elementary School
Programming in the Third Grade

Students in Mrs. Kluth’s class worked in small groups to learn how to write code using an online program for elementary students.  Coding helps build logical thinking, problem solving, persistence, communication, and team work.
Parent Steve Ogreenc helped students in Mrs. Gustin’s class learn about programming and algorithms by navigating Sphero through a homemade maze that he built specifically for the class to use with Sphero!

Project based learning
Second Grade uses the Engineering Design Process

Students have been learning about the Engineering Design Process and states of matter.  We mixed together several solids and liquids until we found the perfect mortar mixture to hold up the walls to our houses for the Three Little Pigs, which we also read two versions of in reading and compared. None of the houses failed the test!

4K Community Outreach
A Heartwarming Performance for our Veterans

The a.m. 4K students helped celebrate Veterans Day by being a part of the program at the middle school on November 10. They did a very beautiful rendition of “This Land is Your Land This Land in My Land” that they learned from Mrs. Haines.

Third Grade Community Service
Helping Our Four Legged Friends

Mr. Oetjen’s 3rd grade class is working on a community service project to help the Sheboygan County Humane Society. A volunteer from the Humane Society came to speak to the class and brought some goodies along, too!

Mrs. Bub’s Blurbs
Greetings, Falcon Families!
There are many topics to be highlighted each month, but the concept of safety is one we think about every day.  In the past two years, our staff have worked to teach our students the reasons behind rules and expectations so that we can all work together to create our safe environment at school.  Check out our “winter playground Prezi” as a sneak peak!

Family Build Night
Opportunities in Making and STEAM Education

In keeping with the district’s commitment to innovation and STEAM education, the Sheboygan Falls Elementary School will host a MakerSpace build night on Tuesday, November 24th. Come join the fun and create your very own Can-Jo!

How does Math Work?
Several 4th grade math students worked on creating a visual model of their math thinking. Students had to creat a visual model of their story problem, then use the model to create an equation that would solve the problem. A lot of great math talk and cooperative group work took place!!!!
Even More Math Fun!
Mrs. Schad’s Kindergarten class had so much fun doing a math activity with their third grade buddies from Mrs. Dawson’s class. The students scooped out the seeds from a pumpkin to learned  about estimation and counting.

Fire Safety
Thanks to the Sheboygan Falls Fire Department

for taking the time to practice fire safety with 4K, K, and first grade students.
Mrs. Bub was able to help students learn about fire safety!

A Focus on Engineering
More STEAM Activities at the ES

Recently, third grade students were given the opportunity to practice their problem solving skills by creating methods to clean up “oil spills” taking the role of a chemical engineer.

Our second grade students were asked to enginner a spider web bridge to hold as many cubes as possible.

Bully Awareness Month Wraps Up
But we are committed year around

The students did a great job learning about how to prevent bullying this month. Even though October is designated as anti-bully month we are committed to stop bullying all year.
We’ve been working hard this month on how to be a buddy, not a bully!!!

Greetings, Falcon Families!
This fall, we have begun word work with our students on their own learning paths, which means we build on what each child knows.  This spelling approach is called Words Their Way, and is just one example of the innovative approaches we use with students each day.  Here is a quick youtube overview of how you can help at home:

Growing our Literacy Skills
Teachers continue to implement best practices in literacy. Their work has focused on word work, fostering student independence and providing student choice. Below students are working on Daily 5 – Listen to Reading and Words Their Way activities.

Welcome to Infinite Campus
Infinite Campus is our new Student Information System used to allow parents access to student grades and schedules. It is also used to alert parents with general announcements and emergency announcements such as snow days or school crises.
We are asking that if you have not set up your Parent Portal and checked your contact preferences, please do so using the URL link that was sent to your e-mail on Monday, September 14th.  If you did not receive the e-mail with the link, please contact the school office and they will assist you in setting up this account.  If you have already set up your parent portal account, you do not need to do anything else at this point.

Welcome Back!!!!
The students took part in a big welcome back assembly this year to build a sense of community at SFES.
The students each contributed a purple thumb print to our school Falcon which was revealed during the assembly.
Mr. Johnson then talked with the students about the bracelets they received earlier in the week.
We finished off the assembly with the SFES School song!!!

New Faces at SFES!
The 4K move from the middle school to the elementary has gone well. We are so happy to welcome the teachers, students and families to the Sheboygan Falls Elementary School community.

Issue: #3  Spring 2015

A message from Lynn Bub, Elementary School Principal

Greetings, Falcon Families!

Spring is a time of renewal and growth, and we are definitely seeing great renewal and growth in our building!  Here are some of the exceptional things you can expect to see and hear more about!

Recently, our elementary science committee and STEAM staff met to discuss our plans for the future.  We are excited to share that we have committed to provide some forms of STEAM approaches to learning in ALL classrooms in our building.

  • Our Makerspace has become popular and well-used. While third and fourth grade are our current users, expect to see more opportunities for our younger Makers to have a chance at the invention bench.
  • 4K is moving!  Next year’s youngest district learners will share learning space at the elementary school, giving them a chance to grow strong roots in our building.
  • Our literacy processes continue to grow!  Teachers piloting Words Their Way (spelling approach) have had a chance to share their learnings with their colleagues and plan for our word work with students for the future. Students have enjoyed looking at words in a while new way.

Should you have specific questions on any of our exciting work, as always, please contact your child’s teacher, Mr. Mike Nikson ([email protected] ), or Mrs. Lynn Bub ([email protected] ).  Thank you for your continued support and participation in our school community!

Sincerely,
Lynn Bub
Principal

Issue: #2  Winter 2015

A message from Lynn Bub, Elementary School Principal

Greetings, Falcon Families!

As we head into second semester, it’s a great time to think about how far our students have come this school year, as well as the great potential remaining!  One exciting piece we are continuing to develop and offer is a Maker Space here at SFES.  If you are not familiar, a Maker Space is a place for students to create within a genre that they enjoy, with support from an adult.  You may have noticed our call for “useable junk” on our facebook page or tweets.  This “stuff,” in addition to some targeted materials (such as kid-friendly circuit boards and pegs for building cardboard creations) will be used by all students and shared for “family build nights” as we gain momentum on this offering.

This is just one example of the thinking and planning that is happening in our building!  Our staff are engaged in a multitude of research and learning initiatives that help us to become better at our craft each day.  One way you can become involved is to consider joining our SFES Parent-Teacher Organization.  Our next meeting is scheduled for March 9th at 6:15 PM here at SFES.  We welcome your participation!  Thank you for partnering with us to expand on our exceptional school community.

Sincerely,
Lynn Bub

Mr. Oetjen’s 3rd grade class has adopted an animal shelter!
Mr. Oetjen’s 3rd grade class has adopted an animal shelter!  We are trying to help out the Sheboygan County Humane Society. Here are some ways you can help:

  • We are collecting food/money for the shelter. ScienceDiet or Purina products are the preferred food of the SCHS.  You could either send them with your child/drop them off at Sheboygan Falls Elementary School (care of Mr. Oetjen’s class) or  the Sheboygan County Humane Society (3107 North 20th Street, Sheboygan, WI 53083).  We have a goal of providing enough food for a month, which is about 30 bags of cat food and 25 bags of dog food.
  • Stop by the SCHS and take a look at some of thewonderful animals they have ready for adoption! We have a goal of helping the humane society get 72 cats and 30 dogs adopted!  http://myschs.com/

Thank you for supporting our class project!

Engineering in the 4th Grade
Mr. Schneider’s 4th grade class worked on an Engineering Design Challenge. Students are tasked with creating a cotton launcher. The project emphasizes the use of the Engineering Design Process that includes steps such as; Ask, Imagine, Plan, Create, Test, and Improve. During the Ask stage, students must define what their specific task is, in this case it was to create a simple device to launch a cotton ball. For the next step, Imagine, students brainstormed ideas for creating the launcher with their teammates.

A message from Lynn Bub, Elementary School Principal

Greetings, Falcon Families!

Thank you for a strong start to the 2014-2015 school year. We hope you enjoy our new Newsletter format that offers the option of finding all three of our building Newsletters in one space!  Our goal will be to provide you with important dates and examples of how we live our vision, mission, and commitments for kids each day.

As you know, we have been fortunate to welcome some great new staff, including Mr. Mike Nikson, our new Associate Principal at both the elementary and middle schools.  While we strive to stay in touch with all stakeholders in our school community, please feel free to reach out to us when you have questions, comments or concerns.  We look forward to working with you this school year!

Sincerely,

Lynn Bub, Principal

Literacy Development at SFES

Our Elementary Literacy Committee has been hard at work reviewing our current literacy processes and selecting professional development for our elementary staff.  This year, we are working on our spelling process.  Several teachers from a variety of grade levels have chosen to pilot a spelling approach called “Words Their Way.”  This approach uses students’ development in spelling to help them learn word patterns so they can apply their knowledge to more words.

Above the Line Choices
Recess and Volume Levels

Students and staff have been working on improving our learning environment by practicing more efficient recess procedures and “just right” volume levels.  The response to these ideas has been great!  Students are enjoying the “quiet waves” they can give and receive in the hallways without disrupting other classes.  Click here to see the lesson we shared: http://goo.gl/1fd24E

First Grade Civics Lesson
The Importance of Voting

Mrs. Schmitz’s First Graders took part in an election because Nov. 4th is the day to vote. Students learned about elections, ballots and voting at their level. Mrs. Schmitz read two stories (The Three Little Pigs told from the pigs’ point of view and The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs told by the wolf’s point of view). The students then voted on who they believed. The class ballots were totaled and the pig was the winner! Each student received a real “I Voted” sticker thanks to an awesome room parent!

Pig wins by the Hair of his Chiny, Chin, Chin!
