Experience the Exceptional?
Issue: #7 Nov/Dec 2015
A message from Mr. Luke Goral, High School Principal

The administration and staff of Sheboygan Falls High School are examining the academic performance Laude System. The purpose of the LaudeSystem is to recognize students for the rigor of their academic program as well as their success in that program. This system would replace our current system of Class Rank and GPA.

The Laude Philosophy:  Laude system allows for evaluation of a student’s academic performance independent from that of their peers. The Laude system is modeled after comparable systems at the college and university level. Additionally, students are assessed on their progress toward meeting pre-established standards, rewards them for taking rigorous courses, better prepares students for the ACT, reduces the stress and negative behaviors associated with class rank (cheating, stress, schedule manipulation, etc.), and may increase chances of admission to colleges and universities.

The Laude System will be presented to the school board at the school board meeting on 12/21/15. You are welcome to attend.

Culinary Event

The Sheboygan County Leadership Group recently cam to tour our Culinary
program. Ms. Diana Woodworth presented how the kitchen has evolved into looking more like a work place environment, how local foods are used, food preparation, using school-grown produce, and entrepreneurship.
Students prepared a lunch for them consisting of: pumpkin milkshakes, paninis, 3 types of soups, and apple and pumpkin bars. We used as much of what
FFA grows as we could and then used other local in season  items. Students were  at their stations and talked about who they are, where they are going and what they prepared.

Culinary Arts At Work!
Come check out this amazing gingerbread house created by Mrs. Meyer’s Culinary Arts II students. Vote daily for your favorite creation at the Gingerbread Festival held at the Waelderhaus in Kohler. Viewing is available November 27 – December 30. Hours are: Sunday – Friday 1:00 – 5:00 and Saturday 10:00 – 5:00.

Java Roost Gives Back
Falcon’s Roast Java Roost presented $100 to the Sharon Richardson Hospice for “pay it forward” month of October and $135 worth of groceries to the Falls Food pantry. Each student was given $15 to spend during a recent trip to Aldi’s. Students needed to use their estimating skills to insure they didn’t go over the amount.

A message from Mr. Luke Goral, High School Principal
With October’s Manufacturing month coming to a close, I would like to encourage both you and your student to examine and explore the numerous career exploration and employment opportunities that are available for our students with our county and state manufacturers. It is my sincere hope that families take advantage of these numerous opportunities our local manufacturers are offering regarding experiences, employment and post-secondary education. I recently attended a career expo for parents and school staff at Sargento and was so impressed by the variety of career opportunities they have to offer. We will be partnering with Kohler for the second year in hosting a career expo experience on January 12 for all our freshman students. All parents are invited to attend. We will be posting more information pertaining to the event in December.
Have a great November! Go Falcons!

A Tribute…

When McKayla and Trevor heard about the 9-11 Memorial Project, they decided they didn’t want to do something typical. Instead, while researching Marcy Borders, a 9-11 survivor, they learned that she was coined the Dust Lady by the media. Immediately, the dust reminded them of the sand in a sandbox. Their search started with not only finding the materials needed, but a recipient for it. After contacting the YMCA’s Little Friends, the sandbox found a home. They even wrote a letter to Ms. Border’s daughter. What a special tribute to a survive who recently passed away!

Athletics Update…
Go Falcons!!!

The Sheboygan Falls High School fall athletic teams have experienced much success as they approach the final weeks of their seasons. With a big victory last Friday evening, the football team remained undefeated at 6-0 for the season and earned playoff eligibility for the first time since the 2011 season. The volleyball team recently won three matches at the West De Pere invitational and currently ranks third in the EWC with a 6-2 record. The girls’ tennis team has performed at a high level all season; they recently won the Brown Deer Invitational and look to begin preparations for regional match play. Boys’ soccer recently hosted a home triangular; our team performed exceptionally well, beating Freedom and losing a close match to Green Bay West. The soccer team plays two home matches to conclude there schedule before tournament competition. Our boys and girls’ cross country teams continue to prepare for our conference meet and sectionals which will take place in October. Our co-op swim team has their only home meet October 8th at Kohler; please come support our swimmers as they continue to perform at a very high level.
The support for our student-athletes has been outstanding!  All of the exceptional things happening in the classroom and in athletic competition have made for a fantastic start to the school year!

Always Impressed, Never Surprised

I am always impressed by the way our student body and staff step up for a good cause. Last week was Make a Difference Week and as usual our students stepped up in a big way by donating over 1300 items to our Sheboygan Falls Food pantry. We kicked off the week with a

school assembly with speaker Mike McGowan that hit home the power of paying it forward and treating all people with dignity and respect. It was wonderful to see some students post positive notes on lockers of other students last week. With all the negativity in our media, it is always nice to be
reminded of all of the good in our students, staff and community. This is just one of the great community service programs and events in which our high school takes part. Encourage your child to become part of the Community Service Club or the Key Club here at school to take part in further community service projects and opportunities.
Have a Great Spring!

Senior Project 2015
English 12 students will present their senior projects in an open fair settingWednesday, April 29 in the cafeteria and nearby areas from 4:00-7:00 pm. Students chose a topic mid year, one that resonated with them personally, and they have been working on it ever since. First students did research to learn more, they interviewed an expert who could tell them what books and articles could not, and now they are in the design phase of their project, where they hope to address a problem or a need that exists.A project-based learning model was used to develop this portion of the English 12 curriculum, which is now in its fourth year. Students further develop their general language and communication skills, and they also learn about important workplace habits of mind. The senior project, which will eventually make up a portion of each student’s ePortfolio, has the potential to create pathways for future success, as students are not only showing what they know but also what they can do.Each student will personally invite his or her family to share in the celebration, and English 12 teachers hope all parents reading this article will mark their calendars for the Senior Showcase event. In mid April, invitations will go out to school administration, the school board, all K-12 teachers, and the local businesses who participated in the Career Symposium earlier this year, but the event is open to the public and all are invited to attend. Refreshments will be served.

 Robotics Team Excels
The Sheboygan County Robotics team recently wrapped up its season in the annual regional in Milwaukee March 19-21. The team competed at Panther Arena for 3 days. The objective this year was to build a robot that could stack totes and cansto try and form as many points as possible. The task sounded easy at first but as the nearly 50 person team and 20 mentors from local businesses looked into it further, it was realized that it would take a full team effort. Students came up with ideas and the CAD (Computer Aided Design) team drew up some possibilities of what the robot might look like. The team met and had design reviews trying to solve whatever problems may occur.Read more…
Chemistry Students Unite!
Energy and enthusiasm coursed through Lakeland College’s natural sciences division when about 60 Sheboygan Falls High School juniors and seniors spent the day engaged in various chemistry experiments. The high school students separated into groups, then rotated from station to station for six 35-minute chemistry experiments conducted by Lakeland College Chemistry Club students.”This was great experience for the high school students and our Chemistry Club students,” said Brian Frink, Lakeland’s professor of chemistry and physics. “The high school students were able to participate in lab experiences that otherwise would not have been possible in their regular school day. And our Chem Club students were able to share their passion for chemistry and develop their leadership skills.”Read more…

Current Freshmen Students: You Are Invited to Be a Part of Workbound!
Workbound is a two-year extracurricular program which provides a guided career preparedness experience for students. Along with support from the program advisor, the student’s parent/s and volunteer business professionals, this program helps students to determine their future career paths and provides them with opportunities for career exploration. Depending upon the year, students will have the opportunity to participate and learn about time management, complete career investigations using the internet based careerinformation site, Career Cruising, meet with a professional mentor, go on several job shadows, create a resume, formulate a personal statement which may be used on aresume or college application, be involved in a mock interview with business professionals, and hear various presentations from local educational institutions. The time commitment is minimal, with four, one-hour evening meetings during a students’ sophomore and junior years.  Recruitment will be starting this spring for current freshmen students. Space is limited, so first-come, first-served. Email Mrs. Meyer, room E107, for more information.

Commitment, Academics & Extra Curriculars

What is commitment? Webster’s Dictionary defines commitment as a promise to do or give something. A simple definition for a complex idea. Many students have dreams and goals they would like to achieve but do not know what a committed person looks or acts like. As a result many students are not able to progress towards their goals and as a result they give up. Regardless what your dream is: enrolling at Madison, starting a band, or playing sports in college you must be committed to your goal. In the book The 21 Indispensable Qualities Of A Leader by John C. Maxwell, he defines how a committed person looks and acts. “When it comes to commitment, there are really only four types of people:”

A message from Mr. Luke Goral, High School Principal

We all have heard about the current and future skills gap and the need for skilled workers in our country and Sheboygan County. A few years ago when this was really hitting the media and I was hearing it more and more from local businesses, I wondered …how this could be? How, with such high unemployment could there be such a need for workers?

After meeting with and visiting numerous companies in our county, I clearly understood what this meant. They don’t just need workers, they need skilled workers. Workers who can collaborate, problem solve and are willing to be lifelong learners. The advancements in manufacturing and the jobs that are available in our own backyard are amazing to me.

A recent article in U.S. News and World Report stated that “U.S. manufacturing employs more than 12 million workers directly, recent figuresfrom the Bureau of Labor Statistics show. There remain, however, about 600,000 skilled manufacturing jobs unfilled” and “if we can’t fill the skills gap, it’s going to be very difficult to be competitive in the global market.”

This past week, Sheboygan Falls High School hosted a career exploration event here at school for our entire freshman class. All ninth graders had the opportunity to hear from and question Kohler employees in relation to 10 different careerKohler Career Day areas ranging from hospitality to manufacturing and engineering.

The common themes I hear from all local companies is their willingness to train employees and their commitment to help their employees advance their education. When I say education, I mean a free technical and/or college education. So, if your child is undecided or unsure of how he or she going to pay for college, I want you to know that there Kohler Career Dayare many great opportunities at local companies that value and reward employees. I encourage you to get on to Career Cruising and Inspire Sheboygan County (see article below) with your child and explore what is out there.

  Senior Symposium a Great Success
Speakers from over 20 area businesses met with seniors on   December 4 for the third annual English 12 Career Symposium. The event is one of the pivotal components of the school-to-work focus of the English 12 class. From small owner operator to home based businesses to major global corporations, the speakers presented students with general information about what working in various fields entails, such as specific job skills and aptitudes as well as education required.

Bullying Awareness
High School can a difficult time for many young men and women. The dynamics of teenage relationships are constantly changing and shifting. That was true when adults were in school and has now accelerated in today’s age of social media. A strong friendship can end over an Instagram picture or a tweet and teenagers who were once inseparable are now mortal enemies with the ability to insult and harass each other electronically from anywhere at any time. This has made the issue of bullying a priority at Sheboygan Falls High School.   Click on Read more for some practical steps your child can take to protect and prevent bullying.Read more…

A message from Mr. Luke Goral, High School Principal
Families,
It is hard to believe that we are already starting second quarter! This year is flying by…seems like we were just
Homecoming Band
participating in Homecoming activities. At SFHS, there are so many great activities and events going on inside and outside the classroom everyday to challenge and support our students. We just ended first quarter with our amazing students presenting the musical Cinderella. Basketball, wrestling and dance team will be starting soon. Last week, we had a wonderful presentation from “Your Choice, Live” for all of our
Volleyball Team 2014
high school students that focused on the small choices that we all make every
day and how those choices influence and guide our lives. As a school community, we are always encouraging students to make smart decisions that will lead them on a positive path.
