A Message from the Principals

January marks the start of a new calendar year and also the halfway point of the school year.  There have been a lot of wonderful things that have taken place and we are proud of the students, staff, and families working together to grow academically, behaviorally, and socially at the Middle School.

Similar to New Year resolutions, the second half of the year is a great time to set a goal for this new semester. Please take a moment to look over the progress that your child(ren) have made, and we challenge you to help set a goal for their academic performance.  As always please do not hesitate to reach out to our dedicated staff if you have any questions or concerns.

Excellence in Education Nominations

Due: Monday, February 5th

We are excited to announce that twenty-four school districts are partnering with Channel 5 to recognize exceptional school employees in a program called the “Eastern Wisconsin Excellence in Education” awards. This program is similar to the “Golden Apple” and “Shining Stars” programs in Green Bay and the Fox Valley.

This program allows parents, students, community members, and staff to nominate deserving school employees in the following categories:

  • Innovation in work (How has the employee demonstrated innovation in his/her work area?)
  • Culture creator in the work environment (How has the employee gone above and beyond in creating a positive school culture?)
  • Social/emotional well being (How has the employee impacted the social/emotional well being of students and/or the school environment?)
  • Community involvement (How has the employee positively impacted the community?)
  • Student connection (In what ways has the employee built positive relationships with students?)

NOMINATIONS (FORM LINKED HERE) need to be submitted by February 5th, 2024. Following the submission deadline, a panel of judges will review each nomination to determine finalists. These finalists will then be asked to elaborate on the work outlined in the nomination. The judges will then select the award recipients in each of the five categories.

The awards show ceremony will be held on Saturday, May 18th, 2024 at the Kiel Area School District Performing Arts Center. The program will be live streamed on the Channel 5, WeAreGreenBay.com website.

Message from the Nurses

Did you know that the United States Department of Agriculture has a great website that provides information on proper nutrition guidelines for every age group? We sometimes hear from students that they are not eating breakfast or skipping lunch for various reasons. Sometimes they say they aren’t hungry. Others may be trying to lose weight due to peer pressure or sports expectations. Middle school students are no longer required to eat their lunch in 15 minutes. They have the option to stay in the commons for the entire 30 minutes lunch break, so they have plenty of time to eat a healthy lunch.

Check in with your children to ensure they are eating a balanced diet. The following websites have helpful tips and activities regarding nutrition.

Messages from the Nurses

According to the CDC, E-cigarettes are the most commonly used tobacco product among U.S. middle and high school students.

  • In 2022, about 1 in 10 or 2.55 million U.S. middle and high school students used e-cigarettes at least once in the past 30 days, including 3.3% of middle school students and 14.1% of high school students.

Disposable e-cigarettes are the most commonly used device type among U.S. middle and high school students who vape. Vaping can have health risks for youth. Most vapes have nicotine in them, which is highly addictive. Nicotine use in adolescence:

  • Can harm brain development, which continues until about age 25.
  • Can impact attention, learning, mood, and impulse control.
  • May increase risk for future addiction to other drugs.

Nurse Amber and Nurse Deanna both frequently see several kids who make themselves ill via vaping, and some who also become addicted. It is important for you to talk about this topic at home with your children!

Cold and flu season is here once again. Here are a few friendly reminders of ways to stay healthy and protect yourself and others from getting sick.

  • If you and/or your child is sick, especially with a fever, stay home to avoid putting others at risk.
  • Remind kids to cover coughs and sneezes and avoid touching their eyes, nose and mouth. Germs spread easily this way.
  • Wash your hands often!  Washing with soap and water removes germs, including respiratory viruses, from your hands. Hand sanitizers are also effective for reducing the spread of illness.
  • If you or your family members have symptoms of COVID, you can obtain free test kits available at many pharmacies.

Wishing you a safe and healthy holiday season!

Nurse Amber and Nurse Deanna

Cold or Flu?

Fall is a beautiful time of year, but along with changes in the weather we start to see illnesses on the rise. The best way to prevent the spread of illness is to wash your hands thoroughly. If your family members start to feel sick, how do you know if it is a cold or the flu? Many of the symptoms are the same. Below is a reference that can help you determine if the symptoms you and / or your family member are experiencing is a cold or the flu.

A Message from the Principals

As we come to the end of the school year, it is a great time to pause and reflect upon all of the work that students, staff, and families have done together during this 2022-2023 academic school year. At the beginning of the school year, we had a school celebration, focusing on getting a little better each day. Seeing staff and families focus on relationships and reflection with students has been a highlight of our time in the office. The true power of reflection is focusing on moments of celebration and what worked well, so we can apply success strategies in the future as we work to improve and grow.

We wish everyone a safe and healthy summer and look forward to continued growth in the 2023-24 school year!

A Message from the Nurses

STUDENTS WHO HAVE MEDICATION AT SCHOOL – END OF YEAR PROCEDURE:

A reminder that you are expected to pick up your child’s medication at the end of the school year. Unless the student’s medication form indicates that they may carry and administer their own medication (EPI pens, inhalers, emergency medications, etc.), the student may not transport their own medication home. Medication must be picked up prior to the last day of school (June 8th). We cannot store any medication over the summer.

If you do not want the medication remaining, or have any questions, please email Nurse Amber or Nurse Deanna.

Thank you all for helping us successfully make it through another school year!!

Amber Silva, RN, BSN and Deanna Timler, RN, BSN

A Message from the Principals

Hello MS Families,

The warm weather in the middle of the month was like an extended “April Fools”, a glimpse into the quickly approaching summer break. With that, we know that the Wisconsin weather is always changing and thus the reminder of everyone’s favorite topic – “dress code.” There will be a trial run for updated guidelines to our current dress code. Students will be presented with the information by the end of the week, and there will be communications shared between students, staff, and families so that we are all well informed as we finish the year strong.

While summer is quickly approaching, we do have plenty of learning to take place as we finish the year at our best. Please reach out to our staff if you have any questions or concerns as we work together to finalize the academic year.  And, as always, if you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to reach out to the main office as well.

Ryan Zak, SFMS Principal

Lindsey Schreurs, SFMS Associate Principal

Safety Update

MS Life Lately …

The fifth graders decided to go on vacation early this year….a READING vacation!

The 8th grade ELA students used picture books to develop criteria to evaluate the quality of text, making connections to other text, ideas, cultural perspectives,

identities, and eras.

The sixth grade reading students have been sailing through The Odyssey, an adaptation of Homer’s epic by modern author Gillian Cross. For extra fun, they brought some STEM into their reading class by challenging the students’ engineering skills to build a boat capable of withstanding the whirlpool.

A Message from the Nurses

As summer is approaching, don’t forget to make your child’s wellness exams and vaccine appointments. If you wait until fall, it can be very challenging to get in!
