Update from Superintendent Bennin
Here we are, having just turned the calendar to November … which means we have wrapped up our first quarter, parent-teacher conferences are underway, the high school musical is premiering tonight, and the days and nights are getting chilly!

As we enter this new season and new quarter, I want to thank you for your dedication to the district and for your partnership and collaboration as we foster an environment for your children to continue growing socially, emotionally, and academically.

Should you have feedback for the district, please do not hesitate to reach out.

Stay Warm and Healthy,
Annalee Bennin
Get In the Zone with SEL
Each morning at the Middle School, we all get In the Zone with SEL (Social Emotional Learning)! To get In the Zone so that we’re calm, focused, and ready to learn, a staff member leads the whole school in a greeting, introduces an SEL skill, prompts classrooms with a couple of questions to discuss together about the skill, and then shares a few closing remarks. Students and staff then follow-up on these skills during their FOCUS time on Wednesdays and Fridays. Getting In the Zone is just one way our students & staff are building community and SEL skills!
Learning To Count in Español
Uno, Dos, Tres….

Students in Senora Bougher’s exploratory 6th grade Spanish class learn how to count past 30. In the photo, Senora Bougher’s students are counting out loud together as she references the numbers on the interactive whiteboard.

FCS with Ms. Deem
This school year, the Middle School and High School welcomed a new FCS (Family Consumer Science) teacher, Ms. Beverly Deem-Culbertson. Ms. Deem comes to Sheboygan Falls from Manitowoc. Students in FCS engage in hands-on activities around culinary exploration, home interior design, and sewing skills. Students in these photos are making microwave caramel popcorn. They had to follow a recipe and measure ingredients to make their scrumptious creations!

Recess Fun!
And, Cold Weather Reminder …
REMINDER: We go outside every day the temperature is above zero! Please make sure to send students to school with appropriate coats and hats.

Welcome Mr. Zak!

Have a great October,
Mr. Zak
Update from Superintendent Bennin
It is October! Thank you for trusting your child(ren) to our district and staff everyday. I do not think we can thank you enough and also emphasize how important this responsibility is to us as a district. We have created a learning environment where we witness our learners and educators actively, inquisitively, and safely learning each day, despite a pandemic that is still looming.

We thank you for your patience as we continue to balance a pandemic and also the importance for your children to be in school growing socially, emotionally, and academically. We appreciate the feedback that helps us to continually improve our practices and also the grace you offer us in these continually fluid times.

We would also like to thank our supportive Board of Education and recognize them as this is School Board Appreciation week. As always, do not hesitate to reach out if you have questions or wonderings, we are always happy to hear from you and work with you to continually improve our district and create the destination district for our county.

With Gratitude,
Annalee Bennin
Cross Country and Volleyball in Action
Our Middle School athletes are back at it! Cross country and girls volleyball are in the full swing participating in home and away games and meets.

Monday Mindful Moments
Monday Mindful Moments is an opportunity for students to practice being in the present and learn to recognize what is happening in the moment with themselves. Each week the 5th grade students meet with Mrs. Lorge for 15 minutes to practice a focusing or mindfulness activity and go over a positive thought or affirmation for the week. This is a moment of calm, silence, and awareness. Students are invited to revisit the positive thought or affirmation throughout the week as a reminder that they are strong and can get through the challenges they face.
Fall Harvest for STEM Students
Last May, the current 6th grade students planted a variety of vegetables, flowers, and herbs, after starting them as seeds in the STEM lab. Students were able to harvest some of the veggies (despite the Japanese beetle invasion!), and they have been used in our school lunch program. One example is the tomatoes added to the salads. And, this year’s 5th grade students will be planting the garden beds as part of their spring agriculture unit.

From the Nurses …
Thank you to families keeping sick / symptomatic students home. We continue to ask you to monitor your child(ren) each morning and keep them home if they have symptoms.  If your child has a cough or two other symptoms combined, they will need a negative COVID test (or doctor’s note) in order to return prior to their 10 days of isolation. Messages that are left with questions about keeping your kids home may not be answered until the afternoon. While waiting, it is in your best interest to schedule a test / doctor appointment, and you can always cancel if deemed unnecessary.
Testing: this year we are accepting rapid tests. Send a picture of the home test kit once completed and email it to a nurse prior to returning: [email protected] and/or [email protected]

We’re so incredibly proud of these students and so thankful that they took a leap of faith and were willing to be a part of a virtual musical not knowing what it would be like. The end result is something quite amazing and goes to show that there can be silver linings even in a pandemic. Thank you to the students for all your hard work and thank you families for your support.

Tips on watching the musical on your TV:
Option 1: Connect your computer to your TV using an HDMI cable.
Option 2: If you have a smart TV and a Youtube account, watch this video on how to set it up.

SFMS Messenger – April 29, 2021

Thursday, April 29th, 2021

April 29, 2021
Can you believe it? We are in the home stretch of the 2020-2021 school year. What a year it has been filled with celebrations and challenges. We are so proud of our students for the resilience and flexibility that they have demonstrated each day!

Looking ahead, we are currently finishing up the Wisconsin Forward Exam. Most students have completed this assessment already, but we do have some students who need to complete various portions of the exam. In a couple of weeks, we move to our final iReady assessment of the school year. You should have received notification of this via Infinite Campus this week. Students complete this assessment in short periods of time. The assessment is different from the Wisconsin Forward Exam as it is tailored to each individual student and their personal skill level.

We look forward to finishing this school year strong! Please do not hesitate to contact your child’s cohort teacher regarding any questions you may have regarding the upcoming iReady assessment or any academic, social, and/or emotional concerns you may have.

Sincerely,
SFMS Principal
Ecosystems Unit
The 5th grade scientists are learning about ecosystems during the 4th quarter, and they are creating ecocolumns to guide them in their learning. The ecocolumns are aquariums and terrariums made from 2 liter plastic bottles. The aquariums hold fish, snails, and aquatic plants, while the terrariums hold crickets, pillbugs, and a variety of plants the students grow from seeds. The students observe their ecocolumns regularly to make sure they are maintaining a stable ecosystem.

The ecosystems unit provides an opportunity for the students to learn about the various types of relationships that can be found in ecosystems, as well as how energy is transferred from one source to another. Additionally, the students learn about the importance of keeping our ecosystems clean and healthy for all the living things and some of the causes of pollution in ecosystems. It is a fun, hands-on unit to finish out the school year!

No Mask, No Ride

Reminder that masks are required to ride the bus, should one be needed the Bus Drivers do have extras on hand. Thank you for your cooperation!
Project Mini Grill
The 8th Grade STEM students are finishing their last quarter by participating in Project Mini Grill. Through the generosity of HUI and Bemis Manufacturing as sponsors, each 8th grader will be able to participate this year.

Track is Back!
After not having a season last year due to the statewide closure of schools, SFMS track is back! Students are running, jumping, and throwing again. On April 26th, SFMS hosted a successful track meet against Manitowoc at the high school. Our athletes are looking forward to their next meet on Monday, May 3rd at SFHS.
SFMS Jazz Band Breakfast Serenade
The SFMS Jazz Band provided our students with a breakfast arrival serenade on Friday, April 23rd. This was the first official performance for our jazz band this year. Hearing their sweet sounds provided many smiles on the faces of both students and staff to start their day.

SFMS Messenger – March 25, 2021

Friday, March 26th, 2021

March 25, 2021
Dear Parents and Guardians,

Drop-off/Pick-up Reminder for Student Safety:
In our last newsletter, I talked about drop-off and pick-up procedures at SFMS. We recognize that traffic can become congested at times as you enter and exit the ES/MS campus. It is important that our families enter our parking lot via Alfred Miley. There has been increased traffic at the Woodland exit that impacts our buses entering and exiting the premises in a timely manner. We also have crossing guards at the appropriate crosswalks for student safety. When students meet families on the side of the road, etc…, safety becomes a considerable concern.

The good news is that once in the pick-up line, traffic moves very quickly and most families are off of our campus in a timely manner.

Here is the message from our last newsletter, thank you for reviewing.

A friendly reminder about drop-off and pick-up procedures at SFMS. We ask that when dropping off or picking up, that families keep our line moving. Please move your vehicle forward to the edge of the building (gym) when dropping off in the morning. We recognize that it is winter and that all of our students want curbside service, but by moving forward, you keep the line moving and drop off safe for all. Once you drop off or pick-up your student, remember that we are still in a school zone and that safety is our number one priority.

We recognize that the mornings and evenings are busy and fast paced. For the safety of all, be mindful of speed when leaving the drop-off/pick-up lane as you drive away. Also, the parking lot is not for driving up for drop-off or pick-up of your student. If you choose to use the parking lot, then please park your car so that your student can meet you in the appropriate location.

Students should always use the crosswalk for safety. When picking up at the end of the day and if you are using the drop-off/pick-up lane, the first cars to arrive need to pull all the way forward to the edge of the gym. This allows for more cars to safely enter the area. Again, our students enjoy curbside service, but a few extra steps taken will help us to ensure safety for all.

Finally, our staff members are doing their best to keep our students safe. Our safe practices as adults will reinforce this for our students. Please remember that if they ask or wave for you to move forward, it is because they are working to keep the line moving quickly and efficiently. Thank you for your attention to these procedures in the morning and evenings.

Sincerely,
SFMS Principal
A Message from Superintendent Bennin
As you may have heard, the CDC released new updates last week around operational strategies for K-12 schools. The Wisconsin Department of Health has also adopted the CDC updated guidance.

Due to our District’s ongoing dedication to mitigating the spread through practices such as wearing facial coverings, sanitizing our hands, physically distancing when possible, and additional cleaning strategies, we are able to safely adjust some of our practices for contact tracing and physical distancing using the new guidelines.

Masks will continue to be worn by students and staff at school. If/When the Governor’s Emergency Order is lifted (currently expires 4.5.21), we will continue to mask under BOE policy Dress and Grooming (po5511).

If your family travels for Spring break, or at any time, please continue to monitor for symptoms and keep your child home if symptomatic. Contact either Nurse Lisa Hackbarth or Nurse Amber Silva for the next best steps.  In addition, you can find the decision tree HERE.

THANK YOU for all your efforts to get us to this point in the school year and to FINISH STRONG! It has been the efforts of each of us that has kept each other safe and learning in person.

Make it a great day!
Annalee Bennin
Breakfast Served with a Smile Daily
All SFMS have the opportunity to eat breakfast at school daily. Encourage your child(ren) to stop by each morning and grab a breakfast to go. Breakfast is currently free for all students.

Solo & Ensemble Festival 2021
SFMS music students have been incredibly busy preparing solos, duets, trios, quartets, quintets, and jazz ensembles for performance at the annual WSMA Solo & Ensemble Festival. This year is unique in that the festival is virtual. Student performances are being recorded at school and submitted online to the Wisconsin School Music Association for adjudication.

We have fifty 6th, 7th, and 8th grade music students performing in forty-six events. Our students are performing on a variety of instruments including voice, flute, oboe, bassoon, clarinet, alto & tenor saxophone, trumpet, horn, tuba, percussion, piano, and violin. Piano accompaniments are being provided by Stephanie Stowers, David Hein, and Erin Beekhuizen.
Could You Hug A Cactus?
Time for the SFMS Musical
Could you hug a cactus? You could but it might not feel so good! Students are busy preparing this year’s musical based on a book of short poems, “Could You Hug a Cactus?” by Phillip Van Wagoner. The musical features students 5th-8th grade that share whimsical, short poems through acting and music. The musical was created during the pandemic and specifically designed to help young performers stay connected and engaged in the arts during a time of separation and lack of live performances. The musical will be released as a video production so watch the announcements and Facebook page for a Watch Party towards the end of May!
Makerspace Fun
Makerspace 2021 was one for the books! This year Makerspace was a bit more challenging because of Covid, but our average participant numbers more than tripled! The kids had a great time working collaboratively and sharing ideas to create and innovate! While we couldn’t use all of the tools or do all of the activities that we normally would, we made the best of what we could do. To kick off the season, the kids made snow volcanoes! From here we moved into light up cards by creating simple circuits!

Another activity that the kids enjoyed was making catapults and then having competitions for height, distance, and accuracy. For our loudest project, our awesome food service crew saved the giant food cans and the kids made stilts! Ever hear 25+ kids walking around on tin can stilts? Woah! Snow Globes were a hit with the kids too, who doesn’t like glitter snow?!?!

Mrs. Lemons and her husband were kind enough to donate pieces of wood for our kids to design and make painted signs, wow, we have some great artists! So many activities were done and memories made, including making musical instruments, marshmallow towers, snap-circuits, sewing pillow characters, marble mazes, moon dough, and the list goes on and on! The kids were sad to see Makerspace 2021 come to an end…but are definitely looking forward to next year!

Community Newsletter
During the week of March 8th, you should have received our community newsletter. This newsletter is truly a celebration of our school year and what we have accomplished.
Thank you, Boys & Girls Club!
Thank you to the Boys & Girls Club participants for the wonderful hot chocolate treats! What a great pick-me-up for Parent/Teacher conferences at the Middle School!

World Read Aloud Day
Sheboygan Falls Middle School celebrated WORLD READ ALOUD DAY! Ms. Falk and Ms. Fritz organized this event for our students and staff to participate in.
Here are some of the fun things we did to celebrate reading:
  • Middle School Grade Levels were paired with an Elementary Grade level and MS students and recorded themselves reading aloud and shared it with their ES partners.
  • Students and staff took a selfie of themselves reading their favorite book to a sibling, friend, parent, grandparent, pet, or stuffed animal. These were printed and posted around the school. Who is YOUR favorite read aloud partner?
  • On Wednesday, Feb. 3 classrooms dropped everything and read aloud with their teachers or other special guests.
  • Read Across America Game: Still ongoing, we are following an interactive map to Read Across America by March 2nd. Classes are working together to travel from a East Coast State of choice to a West Coast State of Choice.

Why is reading aloud SO important?
Author Visits SFMS Virtually
Ms. Fritz, our library media specialist, organized a virtual author visit for our MS students on January 15th. The author, Evan Wolkenstein is a Wisconsin native and has written a book called, Turtle Boy. Wolkenstein grew up in Mequon, WI and has just published his first novel, Turtle Boy which is a coming of age tale set in Horicon, WI that delves into bullying, compassion, and breaking out of one’s shell. Students had the opportunity to listen to him read an excerpt from his book, ask questions, and more!
Mr. McKenna versus 8th Grade
Mr. McKenna, physical education teacher, was challenged by some of his eighth grade students in badminton during their lunch period. Mr. McKenna offered to buy Jimmy Johns to any duo that can make him dive for it. It was a fun way to build community and relationships in addition to offering additional coaching to those who want to improve upon their badminton skills.

How Fast is Your Internet?
DPI is collaborating with Measurement Lab (M-Lab) to collect data on internet connection speeds across Wisconsin. DPI will use M-Lab’s internet speed test data to create detailed reports and to provide maps of internet speeds across the state. These reports can help the Governor’s Task Force on Broadband Access and other broadband task groups target initiatives to improve internet speeds and performance.

You can help add to this data by testing your internet connection speeds. The URL to link to is https://speed.measurementlab.net/#/. Please take the speed test SEVERAL TIMES–the more Wisconsin data there is the more accurate picture we have about internet connection speeds across the state.

Art Class News, Fall 2020
The Middle School Art room upstairs is a very quiet place this school year, as Mrs. Fischer has taken the “show on the road” and brings weekly Art Classes to classrooms this semester! As much as we all miss being in our beautiful, light-filled art space, we know that health and safety are priorities. The temporary situation of having “Art on a Cart” is going well, and we are finding lots of silver linings despite some of the challenges of 2020! Plus, it’s not forever…we look forward to getting back into the Art Room in 2021!

Given that we are now working on art projects in classrooms and many students are working from home in a “virtual” format, many of our usual/traditional “messy” projects (canvas painting, sculpture, ceramics) are temporarily on hold. We are focusing on learning and working with more simple, easy-clean-up materials that are portable!

The other focus of our study this year has been a more in-depth look at contemporary artists. Many of the artists we have “drawn inspiration from” are working and living right now, and are also prominent on social media (or became FAMOUS because of social media!). For example, students in 5th grade learned about artists Jen Stark and Ryan Conners. 6th grade studied the work of 91-year-old Japanese artist, Yayoi Kusama. (did you see Yayoi’s giant balloon in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade?). 7th and 8th grade learned more about American illustrator/filmmaker/animator Tim Burton and Belgian YouTube-famed artist Vexx. 8th graders also looked at the playful murals of American artist Kelsey Montague.

On the technical side of things, students access all the Art lessons (videos, step-by-step directions, exemplars) through our online learning platform, Canvas. That way, whether they are learning in-person from Mrs. Fischer, or from home, they can access the material. Students are assigned about 2 projects per month. (This does not seem like a lot…but students have Art Class once every 5 school days (7th and 8th grade) or every 7 school days (5th and 6th grade). We generally work on all our pieces for two class periods, sometimes more outside of class. Students and parents, if you are in need of any art supplies at home during virtual learning, please contact Mrs. Fischer, and we can arrange for a pick-up.

Basketball Games Have Begun!
Boys basketball is in full swing with students participating in games both home and away. Mr. Nikson and Mr. Johnson are the 7th grade coaches and Mr. Berg and Mr. Schuren are the 8th grade coaches. Good luck to our basketball players this season!

SFMS Messenger – October 30, 2020

Friday, October 30th, 2020

October 30, 2020
Greetings SFMS Families,

Thank you for your continued support and flexibility as we navigate this unique school year. We, the SFMS staff, appreciate your participation in this year’s parent/teacher conferences. Many families reported that they enjoyed having the flexibility of attending via phone conversation or Google Meet.

This was a new format for all. Thank you for giving it a try. We are constantly learning and growing. We learned that although we miss seeing families face-to-face, there may be many who prefer to have the flexibility of time and be able to join from wherever their family schedule takes them.

Sincerely,
SFMS Principal
School Calendar Changes for November and December
The Board of Education met this week and made changes to the school calendar to allow our staff additional in-service days and time as they balance in-person, virtual and hybrid learning. Please adjust your family calendars accordingly. Your child(ren) have been working hard and hopefully enjoy the time. As always, reading is one of the fundamental stepping stones to learning. Encourage your child to spend time with a favorite book on these days. The District will seek feedback about additional days, if needed, for the second semester.

November 13 – in-service for staff, no school for students
November 25 – no school for staff or students
December 21 – in-service for staff, no school for students
December 22 – no school for staff or students

Reminders to our Bus Riders
Our bus drivers would like to remind students to:
  • have a facial covering on before boarding the bus;
  • keep the facial covering on for the entire ride;
  • stay in the assigned seat.
Thanks for doing your part to keep the bus safe!
Isolate? Quarantine?
Whether to isolate or quarantine can be confusing, the below assists in explaining the differences.
Sheboygan Country School Superintendent and Health Department Communication
The Sheboygan County school superintendents, in conjunction with the health department, recently sent a communication to all school families imploring them to follow health and safety guidelines in order to maintain in-person instruction in our schools. As we contact trace, we have found that the cases enter our schools and are contracted outside of our buildings. We have been able to move swiftly and accurately to minimize spread, and are asking for our family and community help. We are all in this together and want our current learning model of in-person learning to be sustained. The letter is shared again here.
Morning Meetings
At the middle school, we have implemented morning meetings this year as another way to build community. Our students want to feel safe, supported and known well in our classrooms and morning meetings help us to do that. All cohorts start the day with a greeting, time to share, a short activity, announcements and a mindful moment to transition into learning. These constructive conversations help to prepare our students for their day. Morning meetings give our students and staff the opportunity to build & practice many important skills, such as SEL skills, that are needed for academic, emotional & social success.

Why Morning Meetings Matter:
  • Strengthen Connections and Relationship Skills: Students practice communication skills during their time to share. They also learn how to listen, cooperate with others, and form rewarding relationships with teachers and peers.
  • Increase Self-Confidence: Sharing personal stories can be scary. Morning meetings provide a safe and caring environment that encourages students to open up and build trust in others, which increases their confidence.
  • Promote Social Awareness: According to the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL), the four central areas of social awareness include perspective-taking, empathy, appreciating diversity, and respect for others. Morning meetings teach all of these skills and also give students opportunities to practice them in real-life situations.
  • Encourage Positive Behavior Toward Others: Morning meetings promote a positive school culture where everyone’s voice and opinions matter. This in turn creates a norm around the need to respect others.
Homecoming Spirit Week
Enjoy our photos purple and gold Falcon pride!
Case in School Letters
As of this week, we will no longer send the Case in School letters via Infinite Campus, as our families have indicated “letter fatigue.” We have instead started a “tracker” on our website. This is updated weekly so that families can be informed of positive cases as well as the number of quarantined students each week. The tracker can be found in the right navigation area on this page: https://www.sheboyganfalls.k12.wi.us/district/covid-19 .

This tracker will be updated each Friday by our district nurses.   Note that close contacts will continue to receive communication directly from the school and county health department.
The band plays on!

Personalized Instruction
Band might look a bit different right now, but our students still play on! Mrs. Winkler is focusing on personalize band labs. Students meet in small groups with Mrs. Winkler and focus on personalized instruction around SF music department goals of being artful, tuneful and beatful.

6th Grade Beginning Band students have been “getting to know” their instruments as well as working on reading both rhythm and notes. 7th & 8th Grade Band students explored the Tuneful and Beatful aspects of music this week in labs working on “Theme from The Avengers” (8th Grade) and a variety of spooky tunes (7th Grade).
GREAT NEWS! Free Breakfast and Lunch
for the rest of the school year!
We notified our families in September that free meals for ALL students were available until the end of December for both virtual and in-person students.
We have recently been notified that this has been extended until the end of the school year, unless federal funding runs out. Please watch the video to learn more. Students’ accounts will reflect that students received the meals with a no charged indicated. The only exception is when students choose ala carte items.

SFMS Messenger – August 14, 2020

Thursday, August 20th, 2020

August 14, 2020
Welcome Back!

Welcome back to school! It is hard to believe that school is less than one month away. There has been lots of planning going on as we prepare to welcome students back to school face to face and virtually.

While we look forward to seeing our students face-to-face on September 1st, it is important to recognize that we are not yet back to “normal.” Our students and staff will be adjusting to a new daily schedule, smaller gatherings, physical distancing, and adherence to public health guidelines. We have the utmost confidence that our school community will come together and provide a safe and positive experience for our students. It is obvious that there are many questions on what school will look like this fall.

As always, please contact the middle school office at 467-7880 for any questions that you may have. We recognize that our families may have many questions as the first day approaches. For your reference, here is a link to our district Return to School Plan. This plan was emailed to district families last week. This document contains the our school return to school plans.

What does a cohort look like?
As detailed in the Responsible Return to School Plan, middle school students will be a part of a specific cohort each day. Students will report to their cohort upon arrival to school each day. Backpacks will be kept with students in their cohort at this time. Students will remain with their cohort for core (language arts, math, science, and social studies) and related studies instruction (except for physical education and band/choir) and lunch/recess. Movement breaks will be built into the day for students. Students will have assigned seats for the time-being. Plexi-glass barriers will be added to tables to account for further distancing.
Bus Information/Drop-off/Pick-up
Drivers and riders will wear facial coverings in accordance with the Governor’s order and the District’s Responsible Restart plan (exceptions may be made for those with medical conditions); riders will apply hand sanitizer upon entering the bus; riders will sit in assigned seats and siblings will share a seat; non-resident students will no longer receive transportation services; special education transportation will have individually assigned seat belts/harnesses.

When students riding the bus arrive in the morning, fifth and seventh grade students will enter Door 7 and sixth and eighth grade students will enter Door 10. This is to help spread out student flow and traffic as they enter the building. The same exits will be utilized when bus students leave at the end of the day.

All students arriving via parent drop-off will enter through the main entrance and head to their neighborhoods. At the end of the day, seventh and eighth grade students either walking or pick-up will exit the main doors. Fifth and sixth grade students walking or pick-up will exit their neighborhood outside exit doorways. This will help spread out students as they wait for their rides.

If you have further questions regarding bussing, please contact Heidenreiter Bus at 467-2551.
Breakfast and Lunch
Breakfast and lunch times will look different to start the year. Students will have the opportunity to grab breakfast when they arrive at school. All items offered will be of the grab-and-go nature. Students will bring their breakfast directly to their cohort room and will not have the opportunity at this time to sit and eat in the commons when they arrive. We are currently working on a no-touch, ID badge option so that students do not have to put in their personal identification numbers.

For lunch, students will eat in the commons and the gymnasium in order to allow for physical distancing and sanitation. Half a grade-level will eat and the other half will go outside for recess. All students will go outside for the time being. This is so that we can rotate eating locations for cleaning and sanitizing. Same as above, students will be offered options that are pre-package and or served by staff following social distancing guidelines. Students will NOT be able to purchase a la carte items until further notice to give kitchen staff time to adjust to the new school year. Microwaves will not be available for student use at this time. Finally, plexi-glass barriers are being added to lunch tables to assist with distancing while eating.
Facial Coverings Resource for Families
Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin has shared some insight on how to help our children transition to wearing masks in the school setting and beyond.
Virtual Instruction
For those families who have chosen virtual instruction for your child(ren), a few words on what to expect. Classes will be live streamed for virtual students using Google Meet. Virtual students will join their core classes (language arts, math, science, and social studies) online regularly scheduled times and follow the schedule consistent with in-person students. Teachers will take attendance based on the student’s online presence. Grade-levels will share their daily core schedules with you. Students will receive related studies instruction via Canvas and will have the opportunity to meet virtually with their teachers.

Canvas will be the primary tool for access to daily learning activities and resources.
All students will be provided a Chromebook to access materials.
The virtual experience may look different for hands-on activities and elective courses and may require alternative activities based on the specific materials needed to complete in-person tasks. Some activities and course offerings may not be offered virtually.
From the Principal
Dear Families,

We have missed your children! We look forward to the start of school on September 1st. Student schedules were initially to be released on August 7. However, we are delaying this in order to address family choices in face-to-face or virtual learning. We will release student cohorts/schedules in late August. Our schedule will visually look different than in prior years to account for the temporary change in our schedule. As the school year moves along, we will reflect upon the current situation and modify schedules when given clearance to do so.

We look forward to the start of the school year! Thank you for your collaboration and support as we embark on this new adventure.

Sincerely,
SFMS Principal

Please communicate these restrictions to your student(s) so that they know your expectations. Purchases made by students will result in charges to their food service account. If your student attempts to make a purchase, the food service staff will remind the student of your restriction. The food service staff will do their best to monitor parental restriction requests; however, if a sale is made you are responsible for payment.
