Issue: #2 Winter 2015

A note from Mr. Nikson
Dear SFMS Parents:

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our families for making my transition to the middle school a wonderful and rewarding one. I have enjoyed being part of all of the wonderful activities that have occurred at the middle school. The middle school is surely a busy place. I have been able to watch Jazz Ensemble and Choir concerts, take part in egg drops in science, help judge bullying posters, and watch Texting and Driving public service announcements just to name a few. I look forward to learning more about our students and how to best support them in their endeavours.

As always, communication is very important to the district and Sheboygan Falls Middle School. We have begun to utilize social media to help us communicate and highlight all of the great stuff your students are doing. You can follow us on Twitter @Sheb_Falls_Ms or Like us on Facebook (sheboyganfallsschools).

Have a wonderful winter and stay warm.

Sincerely,
Mike Nikson

SFMS Associate Principal

Counselors’ Corner
Mr. Uselding and Ms. Stanke like making life easier for parents.  In keeping with that, see the attached article entitled Communication Tips for Parents. It’s full of helpful hints to keep you and your kids talking.
Would your kids benefit from the Rainbow Kids program?  If so, check out the dates for the Winter/Spring sessions.

Celebrity Readers Visit READ 180

This year in Read 180, we are doing something we call “Celebrity Readers.” Our 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students place names of people in a container that they would like to have visit our classroom to share their favorite picture book or chapter book.
Typically, full picture books have been read and part of a chapter book has been shared. It has been a wonderful way for the people of our learning community to share their love of literacy with the students.

News from 5th grade
We want to thank you for partnering with us in the education of your child.  There are many great things happening in 5th grade.  Click the link below to look at lessons from each subject area, questions to ask your child, a list of upcoming events and even more photos.

News from 6th grade
It is amazing to think that we are already finished with half of the school year. Where does the time go? We have made it through the busy holiday season and now we have settled back into a regular routine and are ready for the second half of the year. Since we are already through half of the year, we have also gone through many school supplies. Please take this time to restock any items that have run out—pencils, pens, notebooks, folders, markers, glue, erasers, highlighters, etc. If anyone has concerns during these tough economic times, please contact your child’s homeroom teacher so we can help meet your child’s needs.

RtI, Falcon Time, and the ACTION room
What is RtI? FALCON TIME? The ACTION Room?
Each child is unique in the talents, interests and abilities they possess.  It is the Sheboygan Falls School District’s philosophy to meet the interests and abilities of ALL students through Response to Intervention (RtI). RtI provides a framework for achieving higher levels of academic and behavioral success for ALL students and is practiced by all teachers.  This occurs through differentiation and the adjustment of the curriculum and instructional practices based on the learning needs of students, throughout each day and in every classroom.

“NOTES” from Band and Chorus
From talent shows to concerts, recitals to festivals, Settler’s Park to Kalahari Resort there is much going on in the SFMS Music Department.  Click below to get all of the details.

The Lunch Line
By Amy Lawrenz, Food Service Director

With the start of 2015 our main goal in Food Service is Wellness! We can help you achieve your goals with all the healthy choices that are offered throughout the meals. Fresh fruit and vegetables are offered daily (and need to be a choice on your tray for a qualified meal). We have had the pleasure of being able to use our school grown tomatoes in a lot of our dishes. We also are able to offer fresh apples from Goedtke orchard! When ordering fruit and vegetables we always look for locally grown or at least from Wisconsin. Whole grain and less sodium are goals we are also looking at with each meal.
A reminder for all families, please keep your lunch accounts positive and, if you need help in anyway, please contact us. We are here to work with you. You can also apply for free/ reduced meals at any time throughout the year.
Don’t forget we offer breakfast, an after school Falcon pack for after school events and field trip lunches. We can also supply your student’s class with some healthy snacks for birthdays or other occasions. These forms can all be found on the district web page.
