Thank you to everybody for partaking in our Fourth Annual Make a Difference
Week! It was wonderful to see so many of you taking the time to both make
a difference in the life of someone else and to show gratitude in your own
life. We would like to announce the winner of the door decorating
contest. We invited administrators from around the district to judge the
doors. The winning door was Mr. Bohman’s Falcon Time! Mr. Bohman’s Falcon
Time has won a popcorn party! Thank you to all Falcon Time classes for
your participation. The judges said it was very difficult to choose! Keep
up your acts of kindness and gratitude all year long!

Seventh grade students: Hand in your signed learning compact to your
Falcon Time teacher by Friday 11/4. Thank you.

It has come to our attention that some of the 7th grade students are
getting to classes late after recess. To eliminate this problem, the class
will be let in from the playground 1 minute early. Those students having
classes on the first floor and their lockers on third, are reminded they
may bring their class books and materials to lunch and leave them on the
back tables during recess. They may also hang their jackets on the hooks
in the cafeteria after lunch and retrieve them before leaving at the end of
the day. These measures should help to eliminate the need to go from the
playground to third floor and then back again to first floor classes and
save time. Please remember that jackets need to be on the hooks, not on
the table or floor.

Anti-Bully Slogans for October

Think before you speak.

“Showing gratitude is one of the simplest yet most powerful things humans
can do for each other.” As MAD Week comes to a close, please remember to
continue your attitude of gratitude, as well as your acts of kindness,
throughout the entire year. Every day is the perfect day to make a
difference!

As Americans we have come to depend on the many convenience products that
are available to us, and nowhere is this more evident than in the school
lunchroom. Most parents pack lunch items in single-use plastic bags,
aluminum foil, or wax paper, or they purchase single-serving items that
come in their own disposable package. Admittedly, these products are
extremely convenient, but what is the environmental cost to a country that
relies so heavily on them? Landfills are full and overflowing. Incinerators
pump contaminants into the air. Communities are battling over who will
accept the nation’s trash. We all enjoy these conveniences, but few of us
are willing to allow new landfills and incinerators to be built in our own
backyards. Thank you for participating in the district’s kick-off to our
Waste-free Lunch Initiative!

Attention SFMS Staff and Students – Did you know that in Wisconsin alone
more than 200,000 people are diagnosed with breast cancer each year? Let’s
show our support and wear pink on Monday, October 31st as Breast Cancer
Awareness month comes to a close. Wouldn’t it be neat to have the entire
school filled with pink to show our support?

This year the SDSF, in conjunction with Make a Difference Week, is striving
to create less trash during lunch. A typical American school kid
generates 67 pounds of discarded lunchbox packaging waste per school year.
That’s more than 18,000 pounds annually for an average-size elementary
school, which adds up nationwide to more than 1 billion pounds annually. A
typical U.S. family using disposables generates more than 4,000 pieces of
lunch trash unnecessarily each year, according to our ECO lunchboxes
Lunchbox Waste Study 2010. The 1st WASTE FREE LUNCH is Oct. 26th.
Domino’s pizza, Steamed Broccoli Florets, Ranch Salad, Fresh Blueberries,
Fresh Apple. There will not be extra containers to put ketchup and dip in.
Just place the condiments on your tray with the food you’re using it on.
On the back are a few ideas to help you pack your own waste-free lunch.

If any students or staff have family or friends who are veterans, and you
would like an invitation to our program sent to them, please get their
names and addresses to Alice Samse by Friday, Oct. 28.

Anti-Bully Slogans for October

Be kind…everyone matters.

Attitude of Gratitude quote for MAD Week: “As we express our gratitude, we
must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words but
to live by them.” Take the time every day to show gratitude to the people
around you. A recent article stated that it takes 7 compliments to
counterbalance 1 criticism.

The critical first step of waste prevention has been overshadowed by a
focus on recycling. Please help to promote a greater awareness of the
importance of the “Reduce” part of the Reduce-Reuse-Recycle mantra:
purchase products with less packaging, replace disposable containers with
reusable ones, buy in bulk. The media has done a wonderful job of selling
us on the attractiveness and benefits of buying “new”, “improved”,
“special”, etc. products. However, we already collectively own so much that
we could all survive for quite a while on the existing products – if we
just reused them a few times!
