SFES Communicator – August 14, 2020

August 14, 2020
Welcome Back!
Greetings, Falcon Families: Despite the challenges presented to us at this time, we are so excited to welcome students back to school!

For your reference, here is the district’s Responsible Return Plan. The information contained in the newsletter below may help to answer specific questions you have, and is based on frequently asked questions from our SFES families. We hope it is helpful to you.
Who is My Child’s Teacher?

Thank you for taking the time to complete the survey sharing your child’s intended learning style for fall (face-to-face or virtual). As we gather student numbers, we may need to adjust class lists, which has delayed sharing this information with families. We plan to share your child’s teacher information at the end of August. An Infinite Campus message will go out notifying you when you can view this information in your parent portal in Infinite Campus.
Facial Coverings Supports for Children
Wearing masks is something new for all of us. Staff will work with with children to understand why we wear masks at school at this time and teach some strategies for use. Here is a great article from Children’s Hospital that may be helpful at home, as well. https://milwaukeecourieronline.com/index.php/2020/07/24/how-to-get-kids-to-wear-a-mask/
Drop Off and Pick Up Notes

We will continue the morning procedures we have established in the past. If you plan to use the parent drop-off circle (from Alfred Miley Avenue), please know there may be more cars than usual. Following procedures will help keep things moving. To help move the car line and move students safely into the building, we will be using door 4 (near the playground) in addition to door 3. Please pull as far forward as possible in the car line and your child(ren) can enter whichever of those two doors is nearest. Staff will be available to help students. We are counting on parents to pull forward, and fewer staff may be directing traffic so we can assist students.

At the end of the day, we will continue our use of PikMyKid. As we plan for more cars, another line will be added for select families. To keep traffic moving, the additional line will be for families without middle school students and/or students with individual students at the ES. This temporary additional pick up line will be located at the back of the building. If you would like to participate in this new car line, please complete this survey: https://forms.gle/nRTJrPHhta3nQFPZ7. We will connect with selected families to share instructions. Thank you for considering this option to help us get all students safely to their destination at the end of the school day.

PikMyKid instructions, car tags for every student, and bus tags for students eligible for the bus will be sent home via postal mail soon.
Supply Drop Off?
Because we have such a large school community, we will not be able to offer a large supply drop-off night this school year. Fortunately, our students know our building well, and our staff are ready to help get students settled on the first day of school and beyond. New families can make an appointment to see our building with their child by calling 920-467-7820. If you are unable to visit us in advance as a new family, please know that we plan on extra special care for our children and families this school year, especially on the first day of school.

Please do not feel obligated to send all of your child’s school supplies with them on the first day. Your child’s teacher will communicate ideas for getting supplies to school without overburdening children’s backpacks and carrying capacity. We would like students to focus on getting to their room, greeting their teacher, and being back in their school.
Bus Details
Drivers and riders will wear facial coverings in accordance with the Governor’s order and the District’s Responsible Restart plan (exceptions may be made for those with medical conditions); riders will apply hand sanitizer upon entering the bus; riders will sit in assigned seats and siblings will share a seat; non-resident students will no longer receive transportation services; special education transportation will have individually assigned seat belts/harnesses.

For remaining bus questions, please contact Heidenreiter Bus at 920-467-2651.
Visitor Policy for 20-21 School Year
We typically love to welcome parents and other family members for
lunch or other special activities. Our district is temporarily restricting visitors. If you need to drop an item off, we will utilize our
vestibule. Parents picking a child up will work with our school nurse in our entrance area (door 2). Thank you for your understanding and flexibility. We assure you we are still smiling behind our masks and can’t wait to welcome you into our building again soon.

Our office staff can help route calls and answer questions to help take care of student and family needs.
Nursing Questions

We are very fortunate to have the help of two Registered Nurses in our district. Nurse Amber Silva is the Registered Nurse who serves the Elementary School and will be supporting students and staff. If you have medications to drop off for your child(ren), please contact the office to set up a time with Nurse Amber. Please fill out the necessary paperwork ahead-of-time to minimize contact during this process.

Nurse Amber also works with our local Department of Health and has advised us during our Responsible Return planning. Thank you, Nurse Amber!
What Will Virtual Learning Look Like?
We have received many questions about Virtual Learning at the Elementary Level. Here is what you can expect:
  • Mini lessons offered live at select times during the school day (and recorded for later viewing, if necessary). These include mini lessons for literacy, math, science, social studies and specials.
  • Small group guided time for math and literacy (live, and likely not recorded, as these are interactive).
  • Independent work time based on the mini lessons of the day. Opportunities/expectations to share this work with the teacher via SeeSaw or Canvas; feedback from the teacher.
  • Weekly live social opportunity with classmates.
  • Being live on meets all day is not appropriate or expected for elementary school students.
  • Home support and some student independence will be crucial to success!

Message from the Principals
Dear SFES Families,

Thank you so much for your participation, questions, ideas, and support as we have worked through the process of getting ready for school this year. We are grateful for your partnership in modeling excitement for coming back to school, as well as sharing your calm with your children. Our first weeks will include even more learning as we practice our safety procedures and launch our school year. We can and will do this together. We appreciate you!
