Reading, Writing and Arithmetic!

We have had a successful launch of our academics this year, thanks to some great materials, new learning for staff, and increased student engagement.  Hopefully, you have seen some of the Home Connections pieces for our Bridges math materials, word cards on rings, or some amazing writing shared by your student(s).  Remember that time spent reading together, or using math in real life (such as measuring, cooking, and playing games) is the BEST homework, as it creates memories as well as providing academic practice.

Safety Update

On Friday, December 16th, SFES practiced our second fire drill of the school year.  Our goal during a fire drill (or any controlled evacuation) is to move all 600 students and 80+ staff out of the building efficiently and safely.  Students did an excellent job using a zero volume and walking feet so that everyone safely exited the building.  Have you reviewed your home fire evacuation plan and meet-up point? Winter break is a great time to have that discussion at home.

Play is the Name of the Game

Play is essential for student social development (and to get the wiggles out!). We play outside every day that the combined temperature plus wind chill is zero degrees or above. Students need a jacket and snow pants, boots, and a hat / mittens. If you need support with these items, please contact our school counseling office at 920-467-7820.

In addition, we continue to need Recess / Playground Supervisors who enjoy being outside, and can offer consistent, calm support in helping students practice their social skills. More details HERE.

ES Life Lately …

4K families decorated cookies and prepared reindeer food as part of our winter outreach! We saw a lot of older siblings, who were excited to join in the fun too.

Third graders had an opportunity to help their 4K buddies build gingerbread houses.

During Running Reindeer, special adults in our building visit each pod to do a little holiday reading. Thanks to all of our reindeer! We hope you’ll do more reading over the break at home, too!

Tradition!

From the Nurses …

Your nurses are wishing you a happy and healthy holiday break!

Some things have not changed:  STAY HOME IF YOU ARE SICK!

While RSV is finally decreasing, influenza is still the prevalent respiratory illness right now. If you are interested in this data, THIS REPORT is updated weekly on the DHS website, you can keep an eye on it over the winter.

December 23rd – January 1st: Winter Break (No School)

Safety Update

For the month of November, we practiced evacuating our building to an alternate location (SFMS).  It is certainly convenient to use this location for a drill, even though we may need to evacuate to one of our other locations if there were an actual need to leave the building for an extended period of time (chemical spill, heat/water issue, etc).  Families received notification of our drill via Infinite Campus.  As always, reach out to your child’s teacher or the office with questions.

Let There Be Snow (Pants!)

With the beautiful first snowfalls of the year, we ask for your continued partnership in sending and maintaining outerwear for recess.  We play outside every day that it is above Zero Degrees Fahrenheit (total including wind chill), so please send your child prepared for outdoor PLAY!

We do need BOOTS to go home each night (students can just wear them, if that is easiest).  This allows our Custodians to clean the floors for cleanliness and safety.  K-4 snowpants can remain hung on hooks.  4K students share cubbies with AM/PM peers, so should take or wear all gear home each night.

Note that we will send all snow gear home over winter break.

We Need Readers and Listeners!

Every day our students work on their reading and math fluency and stamina. Some of our students could use someone to authentically listen to them read or take turns practicing their reading fluency. Do you know a grandparent, auntie or uncle, neighbor or friend who could spare a small amount of time each week? We would love to have you work with our readers / listeners. A volunteer background check is required and can be found HERE. Reach out to us at 920-467-7820 for more information.

Fall is upon us which means that we have already dug into our new school year and are working hard toward our goals!  Be sure to ask your child about number corner, math manipulatives, phonics, or any of their specials!  Asking specifics about your child’s day helps them share their learning with more detail and gain confidence.

Thank you, as always, for your partnership in educating our students.

ES Life Lately …
Safety First!
This past Thursday, September 22nd, SFES had our first fire drill of the year. Students did a fine job following directions and learning their evacuation spots outside of our building. We look forward to welcoming our local Firefighters the week of October 10th to review and learn more about fire safety.
Our new 4K Families enjoyed their first family event: 4K Family Football night! Check out some of the photos from this fun, traditional event that kicks off our fall community partnerships.
School Celebration Reminder
As we head into October, just a reminder that our Fall Celebration for Halloween is themed to help us include all students, tie our celebration to curriculum, AND make it predictable for each grade level. Please see HERE for details on school celebrations, and reach out to your child’s teacher with any questions. We are excited to tie our fall celebration to our daily academic work in reading, social studies and science!
From the Nurses …
As we are still finding our “new normal” with school illnesses, we wanted to re-share our ILLNESS POLICY:
Please DO NOT send your child to school if the child has:
  • A fever ~ oral temperature of 100.0 or higher. Students taking medication for a fever should not be sent to school. We cannot dispense medication for a fever at school.
  • Diarrhea and/or vomiting within 24hrs of the school day.
  • Communicable diseases, please call the school nurse if your child is diagnosed with any communicable diseases.
You MAY send your child to school if the child:
  • Has been taking antibiotics for 24 hours or more.
  • Has a mild cold, cough, or runny nose.
  • Is experiencing symptoms which are part of a medical condition.
  • Has minor bumps, bruises, scrapes, etc. that don’t require medical attention.
  • Has been fever, vomit and diarrhea free for 24 hours or more.
Testing is recommended for those experiencing symptoms of COVID-19 but is no longer required for returning to school. This school year we do not have on-site COVID testing at the High School. If you are unable to obtain a rapid test kit, reach out to your school nurse. More information about contact tracing and COVID protocols can be found on our school website’s Responsible Return Plan.
Lastly, if your student has a cellphone and is texting you to come pick them up, please call the school to verify that your child has had their symptoms checked by the nurse or office staff. Picking them up without talking to a staff member will result in an unexcused absence.
Thank You!

Your School Nurses

Safety Town
Opportunity for 4K and Kindergarten Students
Hosted by the Sheboygan Service Club, Safety Town is a 15-hour safety education program for children who will be starting Kindergarten in Fall or who just finished Kindergarten. It teaches safety awareness and accident prevention in a fun, hands-on setting. Taught by a certified teacher with the assistance of a member of the Sheboygan Police Department, kids practice safety skills both indoors and out on our miniature Safety Town lot.
Students learn about pedestrian safety, poisons, strangers, guns, bus safety, and more. In addition, experts to talk about dental care, pet safety, fire safety, and water safety. The Sheboygan Fire Department, Sheboygan County Health Department, Sheboygan Police Department and Community Recreation Department all help instruct the children during this 5-day program.
Registration is open through Sunday, May 15th. You can register HERE.
From the Nurse …
May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and more and more families are seeking information and support on this as we recover from the collective trauma of the pandemic.
Help and information is available. It may be hard to talk about concerns, but simply acknowledging that you may be struggling is a really big step.
Taking a screen at mhascreening.org can help to better understand what you are experiencing and get helpful local resources. After that, consider talking to someone you trust about your results, and seek out a professional to find the
support you need.
While you may not need this information today, knowing the basics about mental health will mean you’re prepared if you ever need it. Go to mhanational.org/may to learn more.
And, did you know?
988 Coming Soon: Starting on July 16th, 2022, anyone facing a mental health crisis can call 988 and get connected to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (also called the Lifeline). The line will be staffed 24/7 with trained crisis counselors and is free and confidential.

A Message from the Principals
Thanks and gratitude for all of the amazing support from our community this past week. It did not go unnoticed. Kind words and many thoughtful items warmed our hearts and reminded us of our strong community and school family. On behalf of our staff and students, thank you for your support.

A Message from Superintendent Annalee Bennin
Sheboygan Falls Families,
This month’s update is one of gratitude and recognition. I believe in ‘not saving a compliment’ and work hard to be grateful for all that is brought to our team each day.
As an educational institute we get to plan and prepare, but we do not get to choose when tragedy faces us. While teams can ‘talk the talk’, it is not until faced with unfortunate or unexpected events that we recognize and reflect on how we ‘walk the walk’. Our community and our school team has demonstrated over and over this year that we walk the walk. Thank you for being part of our strong community!
As I had shared a couple months ago, the Eastern WI Excellence in Education Award to honor the great work of individuals within our educational institutions was implemented, giving community members, families, and peers the chance to recognize excellence in education. This award includes approximately 27 districts, and I am extremely humbled to share that we had 18 nominees from Sheboygan Falls. The next step for each of them is to expand on why they were nominated in 500 words, with the award ceremony upcoming on Saturday, May 14th. Please join me in congratulating our nominees:

A Message from the Principals
Spring has sprung? Perhaps not, but we are awaiting the warmer weather and additional sunshine. In the meantime, curl up with a good book, do some measuring together in the kitchen to practice math skills, and PLAY!
We will take advantage of the snow until it is gone, and ask families to send outdoor gear (snow pants, boots, hats and hand coverings) until all snow, ice and mud have moved on. Thank you for helping us give kids the gift of play to hone their social and motor skills. Play benefits us all!

A Message from Superintendent Annalee Bennin
It is exciting to think that three weeks remain in the 3rd quarter and Spring Break is right around the corner. Thank you for your dedication to your children and our schools this year. It is great to see a community that celebrates many great sporting events, musical events, co-curricular competitions through Forensics and Robotics to name a few. Thank you for flexing with us as we continue to monitor Covid-19 and make recent changes to adjust more to ‘pre-pandemic’ ways. This all takes grace and patience, and we appreciate that you have offered that every step of the way. Special shout-out to our nurses who have dedicated countless hours to helping support our staff and families through these times. Please thank them next time you get the opportunity to interact with them.
With the 3rd quarter coming to a close in a few weeks, now is the perfect time to reach out to your child(ren)’s teacher(s) if you have questions or concerns. This partnership and open communication can truly make a difference in your child’s academic, social and emotional growth and achievement in school. We are here to support and partner to make your child(ren)’s experience positive and productive.
Recently, our Board adopted our District Continuous Improvement Plan which aligns with our Mission, Vision, and Commitments. This is a moment to celebrate for our community as we continue to grow and set goals around Social Emotional Learning (SEL) and Universal Design for Learning (UDL) while also utilizing the data we collect through iReady, the Panorama Social Emotional Survey, and interventions to support our students socially, emotionally, physically and academically. We will continue to explore this plan as a District moving into the 2022-2023 school year. One of our next phases in our plan includes implementing a survey tool for our students, staff, and families to ensure we are receiving feedback from you in our commitment to continually improve to best meet the needs of our stakeholders.
With Gratitude,
Annalee Bennin

A Message from the Principals

Attend a Falcon Families meeting, plan to check out the book fair, or check out related local offerings below. We are community. We are Falcons.

A Message from Superintendent Annalee Bennin
The opportunity to message our families is always an exciting time. It allows purposeful time to reflect on all the amazing opportunities and learning that is taking place in our schools and also those times that have challenged us. Each day our team works hard to ensure each child’s social and emotional wellbeing is cared for so they have the best opportunity to access their learning. We ensure they have relationships with someone in the building so they know they are cared for and appreciated. Please reach out if your child isn’t feeling connected with school, it is our job to ensure they do and partner with you in that process.
As the lead learner in the district, I continue to enjoy scheduled visits to each of our schools and spending time beside your children learning and experiencing their everyday life at school. This allows me to celebrate everything that is going on each day thanks to our amazing educators, food service staff, custodial crews and everyone that makes the district operate. Below are a few pictures of our students in action and the opportunities they experience every day.
I also want to leave you with a great quote that our family lives by, that I hope also finds a way to your family. It is what we ultimately want when you have your family talks around the dinner table, during the car ride, at bedtime or whenever you get a moment as a family to slow down, talk and reflect.
“Parents say they want kids to be caring, but pay more attention to achievement. Ironically, kids raised to be kind are more successful in school and work (& happier too). We shouldn’t just ask kids what they accomplished. We should also ask who they helped — and who helped them.” – Adam Grant
With Gratitude,
Annalee Bennin

Message from the Principals
Greetings, Falcon Families:

As we approach the half-way mark of the school year, we’d like to thank you for your participation and support in our school community. Check out opportunities to engage with our PTO group, Falcon Famiies of SFES below.

Also, just a reminder that we play outside every day that the temperature and wind chill are zero or above. Dig out those extra mittens and hats for safe and fun play. Thank you and Happy New Year!

A Message from Superintendent Annalee Bennin
I want to take a second and say “THANK YOU”.  As the calendar turns to the new year and many think about goal setting, I always push to think about “gratitudes”. Who and what am I grateful for and do they know? This year, I am grateful for our wonderful community and all of our staff. We have been asked to do things or have grace in moments that we could never have imagined two years ago. We have probed our noses more than the average toddler and started to consider it a norm. We have learned to express ourselves not only by what comes out of our mouth, but by the design of what covers our mouth. We can debate what works and what does not…if the pandemic has improved or if it will ever end…where is the quickest testing location and what does the test tell me…the list could go on, but we have not let it.

As a COMMUNITY we have pushed through and because of that our children have learned how to be resilient through our example.  How to offer grace in times of struggle. How to support our neighbors when they are in need. They have also continued to learn academically and socially among their peers. They have been able to access school counselors when the world got heavy and work through what is on their mind. They have been able to find the athletics and co/extracurriculars that allow them an outlet from everything they cannot control in the world.

Thank you for being their rock, for being our rock, and for trusting your child(ren) to us each and every day.  It is not easy work, but it is important for us to meet your needs and ensure your children are safe and learning! Keep being a proud Falcon, reach out to myself or school administration when you have a concern, and lean on each other to be the best community and learning organization we can be.

With warm regards,
Annalee Bennin

Eastern Wisconsin Excellence in Education
We are excited to announce that twenty-seven school districts are partnering with Channel 5 to recognize exceptional school employees in a program called the “Eastern Wisconsin Excellence in Education” awards. This program is similar to the “Golden Apple” and “Shining Stars” programs in Green Bay and the Fox Valley.

This program allows parents, students, community members, and staff to nominate deserving school employees in the following categories:
  • Innovation in Work (How has the employee demonstrated innovation in his/her work area?)
  • Culture Creator in the Work Environment (How has the employee gone above and beyond in creating a positive school culture?)
  • Social / Emotional Well-Being (How has the employee impacted the social/emotional well-being of students and/or the school environment?)
  • Community Involvement (How has the employee positively impacted the community?)
  • Student Connection (In what ways has the employee built positive relationships with students?)

Nominations need to be submitted by February 4, 2022. Following the submission deadline, a panel of judges will review each nomination to determine finalists. These finalists will then be asked to elaborate on the work outlined in the nomination. The judges will then select the award recipients in each of the five categories.

The awards show ceremony will be held on Saturday, May 14, 2022 at the Kiel Area School District Performing Arts Center. The program will be live streamed on Channel 5’s, WeAreGreenBay.com website.

Updated COVID-19 Return to School Plan
REMINDER: As communicated last week Friday, January 7th, with the recommendation of CDC and the county health department, effective Monday, we changed the required quarantine times for positive cases and household contacts. While students and staff may return at day six if symptom free, they MUST mask (days 6-10). Families that do not wish to mask can continue to quarantine for 10 days.

If your child is out with symptoms, please be sure to email or bring along you negative test results before returning to school. This will prevent your student from being asked to sit in the office while we confirm results.

For reference, the parent communication that was sent is attached as well as the adjustments to our district Return to School Plan

Remember that free COVID-19 testing is available for all staff, students and household members. It is located in a kiosk behind the high school.
