Principal for the Day
Message from the Principal!

On February 6th one lucky student was principal for the day thanks to a PTO sponsored fundraiser. During this time, Principal Liam greeted staff, students, and families. He delivered books to teachers, stuffed mailboxes, made announcements, and worked on some very important principal problem solving.
Great job, principal Liam!
How to keep your kids reading over spring break

Musical Performances
Grades 2 and 4 completed their winter songfest concert. It was an artful, tuneful, beatful celebration of all they have worked on.

Grades K and 1 have in-class family participation performances, and third grade will showcase music and dance in their performance.

Drop off and Pick-up Procedures
Dear Families,
We have completed our first successful semester of the 2018-2019 school year.  We are very appreciative of your continuous support and collaboration. We are fortunate to have new families enroll in our school district on a weekly basis. This is a prime opportunity to review drop-off and pick-up procedures. Please read through the procedures in their entirety as some may be new and some may be a refresher.

Sincerely,
Lynn Bub, Principal of Sheboygan Falls Elementary
Shelley Hyde, Associate Principal of Sheboygan Falls Elementary

Principal for a Day
One lucky student will be Principal for the Day on February 6th. Thank you Friends of Falcon Families PTO group for this opportunity. This lucky student had his name picked after a winter fundraiser and will participate in some fun Principal activities! Falcon Families hopes to offer this fundraiser again. Watch for some fun pictures of our day next month.
ES and MS Partnerships
Because of the proximity of our two schools, several partnerships are forming with elementary and middle school classes.
During the month of December, 4K classes did an art collaboration project with Mrs. Fischer’s 8th grade class. The 4K students drew a self-portrait, and the 8th graders used the self-portraits to create an amazing piece of art for the 4K children to keep.
In First grade, students spend time with their 7th grade math buddies working on math together.
We look forward to new partnerships forming on our campus!
Head Lice Prevention Tips:
“Once a Week, Take a Peek”
  • Make checking for head lice part of a weekly routine.
  • During your child’s bath or shower, use conditioner. Brush hair first to remove tangles.
  • Carefully comb the hair when your child has a wet head. It is easier to spot lice with wet hair. If using a lice comb, you can also check the comb for lice or eggs.
  • Examine the scalp for eggs or nits near the hair shaft. Nits are firmly attached and do not shake off as other debris does.
  • Once you establish this routine, it will be easier to detect lice should it occur. Lice treated earlier are easier to treat.
  • If your child has long hair, keep secured back in ponytails, braids, or a bun.
  • Teach your child not to share hair accessories, hats, hoodies, etc. with others.
  • If you find lice, DO NOT PANIC! Your child will handle it better with a calm parent.
  • Head lice is not a sign of being dirty or sick, lice prefer clean hair.
  • You can get rid of lice with proper treatment.
  • Lice do not carry disease or spread disease.
  • All lice cases discussed with the school nurse or classroom teacher is confidential information.
  • Sheboygan Falls School District does not exclude children from school because of lice or nits.
Meet the Counselors
Greetings from Mrs. Humski and Mrs. Lorge!

Hello, from Sheboygan Falls Elementary School Counselors. We wanted to introduce ourselves and share some information about our School Counseling Program. The Sheboygan Falls School District Comprehensive School Counseling Program adheres to the philosophy that the school counseling program is an essential and integral part of the overall education process.
This program supports, facilitates and encourages classroom instruction and student achievement. Our counseling program is proactive and preventive in its focus. More specifically, our mission is to maximize the potential of all students, helping them to become caring, capable, connected, and confident members of society. The program addresses the personal/social, educational and career needs of all students.  The program’s ultimate goal is for students to graduate with the competencies necessary to be able to make self-directed, realistic and responsible decisions and to be successful contributors to society.

WSCA Announces Program of Promise Award Winners
Milwaukee, WI. – This year, ten school counseling programs met/exceeded the requirements for Program of Promise award and will receive their awards at the annual Wisconsin School Counselor Association (WSCA) conference in Madison, WI on February 7, 2019.

The Program of Promise award is the highest recognition that a comprehensive school counseling program can receive from WSCA. School counselors submit a Wisconsin School Counseling Program Accountability Report (WSCPAR) highlighting their data driven program, student results in the career, academic, and social emotional domains, and school climate and safety. The peer reviewed WSCPAR must meet and exceed stringent content standards for award consideration. WSCPAR’s are reviewed once per year by a panel of school counseling professionals with the next submission deadline being October 15, 2019.

“Completing and submitting a WSCPAR to WSCA shows a commitment to advancing, creating, and maintaining a comprehensive and data driven school counseling program,” said Stacey Miller, WSCPAR Coordinator. “Meeting and exceeding the standards for the Program of Promise award grants recognition in front of your colleagues.”

SFES Communicator – December 2018

December 2018
 Happy Winter to All!
 Winter Break is coming fast!
December 21 (last day before break) through January 2 (first day back).
Wondering how to keep the learning going over break? That’s simple! Keep reading! Research shows that reading to any age child daily for 20 minutes is beneficial for vocabulary development, fluency, comprehension and more. Plus, it makes great memories! Cozy up together and read.
American Education Week
AEW ended in a success with Falcon Pride. We couldn’t be more proud our educators who dedicate themselves to a lifelong journey of education, both personally and professionally.
Title I Family Night
Title 1 Family Night: Mrs. Salzman, Mrs. Reiter, Mrs. Anzia organized a wonderful event for families. Families had the opportunity to participate in reading, math and/or craft stations with their children. What a great way to spend some quality time together.

Sock Party
Mrs. Theil’s kindergarten had a sock party as a classroom reward. The kids incorporated their sock party into their writing time.
St. Jude’s Ranch Recycle Card Program
Ever wonder what to do with your holiday cards after the holiday season? Please join Sheboygan Falls Elementary to support St. Jude’s Ranch Recycle Card Program in their effort to provide teens with life and work skills. The teens learn important life skills by recycling and upcycling the holiday cards into something new. Proceeds help support St. Jude’s. After the holidays, we will have a collection box where you can donate holiday card fronts. It’s simple – cut off the fronts of any holiday cards and then place them in the donation box in front of the office. Thanks for participating.
Box Top Challenge
Falcon Families of SFES is holding it’s first contest of the year. The classroom, per grade level, that collects the most Box Tops will receive a pizza party!

Send your Box Tops to school labeled with your student’s name and classroom teacher (or we won’t know who to credit). All Tops that have been turned in so far this year have been credited for your class. Good luck!
Tuition Waiver
If you are anticipating a move or moving out of the Sheboygan Falls District during the current school year, your student can continue attending school in Sheboygan Falls. Please contact your building office, or the district office, to receive DPI Form PI-9419-A – Request for Tuition Waiver Due to Move, for the remainder of the 2018-2019 school year. Completion of this form will enable your child to continue attending school in the Sheboygan Falls District even though you no longer live within the District boundaries for the remainder of this school year. An open enrollment application or alternate open enrollment application will then need to be completed for the 2019-2020 school year and beyond. Please call Julie Hahn at 467-7893 if you have any questions regarding tuition waivers or open enrollment.

A Book A Day helps the Literacy stay!
Every day we try to arrange a guest adult visit to a classroom to read aloud and make connections. Check out Mrs. Loehr’s class enjoying this week’s book
, Square, read by Mrs. Hyde.

We are in our second year of participating in Classroom Book A Day! You can participate at home, too. Classrooms are encouraged to take time to read a picture book and talk about its message every day. You’re never too old for a picture book!

#classroombookaday was started by Jillian Heise, inspired by Donalyn Miller’s #bookaday. #classroombookaday is a goal to read aloud a picture book every day of the school year to students at any grade level.
Mad Scientist Day

Mad Scientists took over the third grade pod on Halloween. Thanks, Mr. Anderson, for your Science demonstrations!
Author Visit

In conjunction with the Sheboygan Children’s Book Festival, Mrs. Jones secured author Ken Keffer for a visit to our school. Ken has penned seven books connecting kids with the outdoors, as well as a hiking guide. This year, our third and fourth grade students met with the visiting author.
4K Fall Fun

4K Fall Fun yesterday, a Science Experiment we did yesterday as a team. We talked about dry ice (as a solid turning into a gas we can see) and bubbles. Then we put the dry ice and bubbles together for some spooky, educational fun.
We love our Firefighters!

Be sure to ask your child about our recent Fire Prevention Week lessons. Our local firefighters talked about staying safe at school and having a plan at home. Do you know your family reunification spot? Ask your child today!

A Note from our Nurses
As summer approaches we fill our calendars with fun, vacations, relaxations and appointments. As we close the current school year and prepare for the 2018-2019 school year please make time to get all the necessary appointments done ahead of time.

Doctors visits: physicals, Immunizations, medication forms, etc

Dental visits: see your family dentist
or
fill out paperwork to participate in the School Dental Program we offer here at school.

Vision: be on the lookout for squinting, complaints about blurry vision, headaches, worsening performance at school, short attention span, losing one’s place when reading, avoidance with reading, and turning head from side to side when looking at something.

Take time to schedule these appointments ahead of time to avoid the rush and stress at the beginning of a school year. We want your children at school, ready to learn. Please contact your school nurses if you have any questions or need help finding access to care.

A Note from our Nurses
A Note from our Nurses
No one likes to be sick and as our country is seeing record high numbers of the influenza virus, we are encouraging parents to read the article below. The school policy is for a student to remain free from fever (100.8 or higher) for 24 hours without fever reducing agents. Please be respectful of other staff and students wellness and keep your kids home until this is achieved. The only way to stop the spread of the flu is to keep yourself and others home when sick.

 From Our Nurses
As the winter weather continues, and we go from rain to freezing rain to snow please remember safety. This is important as you navigate icy roads and sidewalks. If you feel yourself losing your balance, tuck into a ball and keep your head and face away from the fall. Do not put your hand out to catch yourself or you may risk breaking your arms or wrists. Instead take small steps and try to keep your center of gravity over your front leg. This is a term called “walk like a penguin” The “waddle” keeps your center of gravity over your front leg.

Tips for walking safely in winter weather:
  • Give yourself plenty of time to get to your destination
  • Wear shoes or boots with good traction
  • Walk at a slower pace
  • Stay on designated walkways
  • Use handrails when using stairs and entering/exiting buildings.

SFES Communicator: December 2017

Tuesday, December 19th, 2017
December 2017
Greetings!
For SFES, December is about spreading kindness!
For the month of December, our theme has been the Spirit of Giving and Making a Difference. We can all have a spirit of giving by keeping kindness going. You might be asking, what does it mean to keep kindness going? When we say ‘keep kindness going’ we’re talking about starting a chain of kindness.
We have been encouraging our students to participate in acts of kindness throughout the month. We also sent out a few video links to staff and recommended each class do some kind of kindness project.
When we keep kindness going, we create a chain of kindness that can go on forever.
Have a spirit of giving kindness to others!
Sincerely,

Lynn Bub
Elementary Principal

SFES welcomed families on December 7th for our Title 1 Winter Wonderland event. Students (and their families) participated in activities that support math and literacy instruction along with the option to make a fun winter craft. Check out the parent information we shared here:
MARIO CART FOR PE
How about playing Mario Kart without the actual gaming
system? Students in PE class
with Mr. Houwers have been
moving and learning through
the adaption of a video game. Students work together as teams
to move around the track while avoiding obstacles such as banana peels and turtle shells.  They earn points for each lap completed which they can trade in for “SuperKarts.”

HOUR OF CODE
Fourth grade students in Ms. Sense’s class participated in the Hour of Code last week. Students completed coding activities online. For more information, please visit the Hour of Code Website.
A Note from Our Nurses

Wear your seat belts!
Wearing your seat belt is your best defense against injury or death in the event of a crash. A seat belt increases your chances of surviving a crash up to 60%. Far too many motorists refuse to buckle up.
Facts:
-3 out of 4 crashes happen within 25 miles from home.
-You can still be thrown from a vehicle even if you are riding in the back seat. You can also injure others from the back seat if you are unrestrained.
-Wear your seat belt even at night. There are more high risk drivers on the roads at night such as impaired drivers and drowsy drivers, which can increase your risk for a crash.
-National research shows you are 25 times more likely to be injured or even killed if you are ejected or thrown from your vehicle.
Please view the December Tidbit Times from the Sheboygan County Health Department for more information on winter weather safety.
