A Success
A huge thank you to our students, families and staff for a successful service learning project. We raised over $3,000 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma society with our spare change! Students earned a crazy sock day, a super hero dress up day (coming up Tuesday, February 18), and can look forward to Principal Karaoke in March.
What a fun way to help others and learn about citizenship!

During the week of February 10-14, 2020, Sheboygan Falls Elementary School will be participating in Pennies for Patients, a service-learning program that helps raise critical funds for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS), the world’s largest nonprofit fighting blood cancer.
Many in our building know someone affected by Leukemia or Lymphoma, and Pennies for Patients is a small way for us to show our support for finding a cure. Every penny counts! Check out more information here.
A Message from Our School Nurses
Coronavirus isn’t rare. In fact, seasonal coronavirus activity typically increases in Wisconsin this time of year, along with influenza and other respiratory viruses. Attention is heightened in this outbreak because it is a novel, or new, form of the virus.

“We know people are wondering what to do to protect themselves and their families from this virus. Our best advice is to follow the same steps for avoiding colds and flu, including staying home when you’re sick, covering coughs and sneezes, and frequently washing hands,” Ayers said.

People who are planning a trip to China should keep an eye on news reports and be aware of this rapidly changing situation. People who have returned from China and are feeling sick should contact their health care provider and let them know about the travel and symptoms before going to a clinic, office, or emergency room.

DHS is providing updates on 2019 novel coronavirus, including case counts, on our
Outbreaks and Investigations webpage
. It will be updated by 2 p.m. each afternoon.

Because we are still in flu season and the flu is also a serious respiratory disease, we continue to encourage everyone to get a flu shot, if you are able.

Dear SFES families,

As we celebrate the new year (and our days start to get longer again), our thoughts turn to spring. Hopefully, the groundhog can give us some good news, but if not, please do continue to send winter outerwear with your child(ren) each day.
Play is truly the work of childhood!
You can help by making sure your child has what they need to get outside, move their bodies, and practice their social skills

Thanks, always, for your partnership.

District Launches New App
We are excited to announce the launch of the “Sheboygan Falls School Dist” app by SchoolInfoApp which is now available for iOS™, Android™, and Windows™ devices. The app enables parents, students, and staff to stay connected and informed about what’s happening at the District level, as well as all three of our schools.
Families will still need to use Infinite Campus to make lunch payments and grades, as well as Canvas to view student work. Both of these applications are linked at the bottom of our new app.

More information about our app, as well as helpful hints can be found on our website:

The SFSDconnect app that was previously being used will be discontinued.
Crossing Guard Appreciation
Thank you to our amazing crossing guards, Ms. Tina and Ms. Chelsea that support the students of the Sheboygan Falls School District.
Reminder
SNOW! The snow has finally arrived and seems to be staying for awhile. With that in mind, a few things to remind all families. First of all, drop off time is at 7:30 am. There is no supervision prior to 7:30 and students should not be out in front of Door #3 waiting for it to open as they are starting to play in the snow mounds outside. This can be very slippery and dangerous, especially as there is no supervision.

The cones have been picked up at this time due to the plow coming through the parking lot. Please know, that although they are removed at this time, that is still a designed walking path and cars should not pull forward into the loop from the parking lot.
Click here for the Tidbit Times Newsletter and learn more about Safety in the Snow.

Kindness Elves
Mrs. Koehl’s class is enjoying “Kindness Elves” this December to help them be more kind and thoughtful during this festive time of year. Yesterday the “Kindness Elves” asked the students to read to a Kindergarten class. Mrs. Kluz’s class graciously accepted our invitation! What an excellent opportunity for the 4th graders to read and work with a wonderful group of Kindergarteners!

Inspire Sheboygan County Externship
Eleven district teachers recently took part in an externship at American Orthodontics in Sheboygan. Check out their feedback below.

I really enjoyed having the opportunity to visit AO. It allowed me to experience how the problem-solving skills that we teach in the classroom are applied in a real-world setting. Thanks again AO!
~ Mr. Perkovich

It was a validating experience for me, as a lot of the skills they are looking for in their employees are pieces we are teaching and embedding through our social skill instruction (problem-solving, communication, responsibility, time management, etc.).

Date Set for Required Human Growth & Development Advisory Committee Meeting
Wisconsin Statute 118.019 states that school districts that offer human growth and development must have an advisory committee appointed by the school board and composed of parents, teachers, school administrators, pupils, health care professionals, members of the clergy and other residents of the school district to advise on the design and implementation of the human growth and development curriculum and to review the curriculum. Although not included in the current statute, to keep the Human Growth and Development curriculum current, a regular review of the curriculum is recommended at least every three years.

Community and staff members are invited to the advisory meeting on January 20, 2020, from 4 to 5 pm in the District Office inside Sheboygan Falls High School. Community and staff members interested in participating should contact Director of Instruction Mary Lofy Blahnik at District Office 920-467-7893 or email

Nurses’ Notes
Battery Caution
A friendly reminder to keep children and pets safe this holiday season: double check that the batteries in your ornaments/holiday decorations are secured with a screw. If accidentally ingested, these “button-batteries” cannot simply “be passed” due to the injuries the battery acid can do if they leak internally.

Flu
As we go into winter break, the school nurses want to share that we expect the flu season to really start to roll-in when we return in January. For those of you who like data, take a peek at the most recent WI flu data:
Please talk to you children about good handwashing and covering your coughs to prevent the spread of flu. If you haven’t gotten your flu shots, over break would be a great time!!
Search Firm Seeks Input
The School District of Sheboygan Falls Board of Education has selected McPherson & Jacobson, L.L.C., Executive Recruitment and Development to assist them in the important task of selecting superintendent candidates for the board to interview.

Parents are invited to give valuable input into determining the qualities of the next Superintendent. We would appreciate it if you would take time from your busy schedule to meet with the consultants on Tuesday, January 7th at 6:00 p.m. at the Sheboygan Falls Middle School Library, 2 Alfred W. Miley Avenue in Sheboygan Falls.

You input is very important to us, we hope you will attend! This meeting is open to any patron who wishes to provide input.

Dear SFES families,

With this season of snuggling in, we would like to encourage everyone to continue reading over the winter holiday break! Read a menu, a favorite magazine, play a board game with directions, or read a recipe! Spending time reading with children in your daily life sets them up for a lifetime of this important skill. Have a wonderful break!

From the Nurse
As the cold weather is upon us and we are indoors with each other and our families please remember some important health tips.

National Handwashing Week is December 1-7, 2019. This is so important for Infection Prevention.

Follow these simple steps:
  • Wash or sanitize your hands upon entering the building.
  • Always wash or sanitize your hands when dirty or before eating.
  • Do not cover you cough or sneeze with your hands.
  • Finally, remember to never touch your T zone (mucous membranes of the eyes, nose or mouth) This reduces your chances of getting sick from a respiratory or gastro-intestinal infection.

SPREAD THE WORD NOT THE GERMS!!!!!!!!!

First graders enjoyed a hands-on opportunity (pun intended) to learn about proper handwashing. Thanks, Nurse Amber, for spending this time with students talking about healthy habits.

Our Notification System is back to Infinite Campus
System Alert test planned for November 3
School District of Sheboygan Falls is returning to Infinite Campus for its notification system.

The following information asks you to update your preferences in Infinite Campus to receive emergency notifications and also explains why we are making the request.

How to update Infinite Campus preferences:

You are already part of Infinite Campus as a parent/guardian in this District. At registration, you would have selected your preferences, or settings, for receiving important notifications. However, to be sure everyone has their preferences up-to-date, please:

· Go into Infinite Campus Parent Portal and confirm that your notifications are correctly selected. Infinite Campus requires you to opt into receiving text messages, as some phone plans charge to receive texts.

· We have included a diagram to show you how to do that.

Why is the District using Infinite Campus for emergency notifications?

Earlier this school year, the district informed parents/guardians that the District was switching to a new notification system. To make the change, we asked parents/guardians to create their preferences for notifications using Campus Suite. We made that request so that we could conduct a test of the new system. Unfortunately, the test demonstrated that the service is not as reliable as we would like it to be. We first tried to work with the company, but in the end, we determined that the fix was too far down the road for us to be comfortable. We decided to go back to Infinite Campus because the reliability of an emergency notification system is extremely important.

Finding the problems BEFORE actually needing to use the system is good news, yet we realize it may be confusing or it may be an inconvenience. We are sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused. Thank you to everyone who helped us test an alternative system, and thank you also for your cooperation to update Infinite Campus.

How do I know Infinite Campus is working?

We will run one additional test of Infinite Campus alert notification on Sunday, November 3 at noon. If you do not receive the test message, please check your notification settings again. You can also call the school office on Monday for assistance.
November 4 Parent Session for Virtual Learning Days
Virtual Learning Days (VLD) can be used in the event of severe weather events (e.g., wind chill, snow, flooding) and illness epidemics. The Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction piloted VLD in districts throughout the state with great success. Given the weather forecasted for the upcoming winter,
the School District of Sheboygan Falls is preparing for the use of VLD.

We are thankful for those families who recently completed the survey that was sent out to check on home Internet access. The results indicate that our students should be successful connecting their 1:1 devices or using a home computer. If this is not the case, our staff will make every attempt to make an alternative activity available.

If you would like to learn more about VLD, please read the document linked below. We are also offering an evening session for families and their caregivers to learn more. This event will take place on Monday, November 4 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.
at the middle school commons area. In addition, on November 14, we will be assigned virtual homework for grades 1 through 8, as these students are normally not allowed to take their Chromebooks home. This should be a great opportunity for families to check connectivity with a school-issued device to your home network and report issues to their teachers.

Read the family handout for more information.
Mad Scientist Day
Three Cheers for 4th Grade Falcon Leaders!
Our Falcon Leaders are off to a great start! These fourth-grade students receive leadership lessons from our school counselors and have leadership tasks in our school community. We are so proud of their work and learning so far.
Children’s Book Festival Author Visit
We were fortunate to have a visit from Children’s Author Liesl Schurtliff, who specializes in fairytales and reader’s theater. The expressions on the faces of our students says it all. What an exciting and motivating visit!
Counselors’ Corner
School Counselors, teachers, and staff work to promote a safe, trusting, and positive school climate. We want our students to have good relationships with our staff, and feel like they have at least one trusted adult that they can go to if they are having a problem or concern.

During the week of November 18-22, your child’s teacher will be doing a Falcon Tool Lesson with their class about feeling connected in their school community. Students will learn about what it means to have a safe trusted adult at school, and also be given a survey to identify the adults in their school community that they consider and can identify as their safe trusted adults.

Counselor’s Corner
Hello, from Sheboygan Falls Elementary School Counselors! We are excited to be back for another wonderful school year with our students! We wanted to introduce ourselves and share some information about our School Counseling Program.
The Sheboygan Falls School District Comprehensive School Counseling Program adheres to the philosophy that the School Counseling program is an essential and integral part of the overall education process. This program supports, facilitates and encourages classroom instruction and student achievement. Our counseling program is proactive and preventive in its focus.
More specifically, our mission is to maximize the potential of all students, helping them to become caring, capable, connected, and confident members of society. The program addresses the personal/social, educational and career needs of all students. The program’s ultimate goal is for students to graduate with the competencies necessary to make self-directed, realistic and responsible decisions and to be successful contributors to society.
We support student success through weekly classroom School Counseling classes, small groups, and individual counseling. We advocate for what is best for our students and provide support through communication and collaboration with staff and families. If you have any needs or concerns that arise this school year, please feel free to reach out to one of your Elementary School Counselors!

Sincerely,
Mrs. Humski & Mrs. Lorge

Update from 4K
This week we received our first shipment of free books. Every month, each of the 4K students will go home with a free book thanks to some very generous partners in education. This months selection was The Gruffalo. Look at those excited readers. Thank you to all of our donors!! Happy reading 4K families!!
Falcon Leaders
This school year, the 4th grade Falcon Leaders have had some restructuring. You will see them around the building taking more of a leadership role in supporting students’ expected behaviors in the hallway and in the lunchroom. Watch for them outside to help greet in the morning and to help dismiss at pick up. We are so excited to watch these students grow as leaders.
PikMyKid
We are thrilled to have PikMyKid procedures up and running. The safety of our students is our number one priority. We have found that this new process has allowed for more secure procedures. Thank you for taking the time to be flexible as we make changes to best support all.
If you have any questions about the after school routine, please contact the office.
4K Family Football Night
On September 13, we kicked off our 4K family events for the year with a wonderful tradition: 4K family football night. Our 4K community shared a meal and then were treated to a Falcon Football win! Prizes and pom poms were the icing on the evening. We can’t wait for our next 4K family event!

Reminders from our School Nurses!
Please remember to make sure you to communicate your children’s immunizations to your school nurses. If you are new to the district, or have a student entering 4k, 5k,or 6th grade you need to provide a copy of updated immunization records.

We also want to remind you of our policy of when not to send your children to school. This information is also on the district website and in the handbooks

Cold/Sore Throat/Cough:
A child with a severe cold and hacking cough should remain home and rest even though they may not have a fever. If your child complains of a sore throat and has no other symptoms he/she may go to school. If white spots can be seen in the back of the throat or a fever is present, keep the child home and call your physician

Stomach Ache/Vomiting/ Diarrhea:
Contact your doctor if your child has a stomach ache which is persistent enough to limit his/her activity. If vomiting occurs, keep your child at home until he/she can keep solid food down. A child with diarrhea should be kept home. Contact your doctor if improvement does not occur.

Fever:
A fever is a warning that all is not right. NO child with a fever of 100 degrees(without fever reducing agents) should be sent to school. Do not allow your child to return to school until he/she has been fever free for 24 hours.

Rash:
A rash may be the first sign of one of the many childhood’s illnesses, such as chicken pox. A rash may cover the entire body or may appear in only one area. Do not send your child with a rash to school until your physician has said it is safe to do so.

Message from the Principals
What an exciting year of learning it has been! We hope you will keep the learning going over summer in whatever way works for your family. Read those menus, books, and magazines together, do some measuring, counting or experimenting, and enjoy the different kinds of learning that summer brings. Check out these

Pod-tacular Celebration Week
This year, we are excited to kick off the last week of school with a celebration of learning for each Pod, called Pod-tacular. Your child will have special activities during this time along with a video created just for them, of them. Please send your child to school wearing the specific pod color of the day as we celebrate and reminisce at the same time!

Remember, due to our snow days, June 7 is now a full day of school for our students!
PikMyKid

Coming 2019-2020 school year will be a new process to pick your child up from school. We will be working with PikMyKid to create new pick up procedures for your convenience. Prior to the start of the school year, PikMyKid will need to access family information such as, email, phone number, address, and students name. This information will allow us to get the system up and running in September. Look for more information this summer at and registration.
Music Performances – Tuneful, Beatful, Artful
Kudos to Stephanie Stowers and Sally Haines for trying some new approaches to student performance and opportunities for students to share their skills. On May 7th, the third grade held a folk dance “informance” to teach their families what they have learned about the purpose and techniques of folk dancing. Families got to participate and it was an enjoyable, educational evening.

On May 9 and 10, SFES again hosted Claudia Eliaza as musician in residence. More kudos to our music teachers for organizing this event for our students.
Counselor’s Corner
As summertime draws near, along with all of the fun activities that will occur, many students will have increased free time. During this free time, many kids will go online. We would like to provide you with some useful information about social media and internet awareness. It is important to keep an open dialogue with your
child about their activity online.

Message from the Principals
Happy Spring! While it is tempting to “wind down” at this time of the year, we know that the fourth quarter is when the magic happens. The biggest gains are made, the strongest connections forged, and the greatest confidence is built during this time. Thank you for partnering with us to make every moment just as important as the last.

Week of the Young Child
April 8–12, 2019 is the Week of the Young Child. The Week of the Young Child™ is an annual celebration hosted by NAEYC to spotlight early learning, young children, their teachers, families, and communities.
STEAM Night – Cardboard Carnival
Families were invited to come with designs and plans and use the Engineering Design Process to create their own carnival-style game. The last 30 minutes students and families were able to share games and try out others’ creations.
PikMyKid
We are working with PikMyKid, a software for streamlining parent-child matching for the car line at the end of the day. Our hope is to continue to increase safety and efficiency at the end of the school day during pick up. We are hoping to pilot the use of this software with a small group of families this spring and roll out in fall after bugs have been worked out.
Counselor’s Corner
What is It? Bullying, Teasing, Conflict, or a Mean Moment?

It’s no fun to have someone be mean to you. It hurts. But what exactly is it when someone is mean to you? The following is what students at SFES learned in their CAPSS (Career, Academic, Personal, Social Skills) class about mean behaviors.

Teasing is when everyone is having fun, no one is getting hurt and everyone is participating equally (i.e. a group of friends decide to give everyone silly nicknames).

Conflict is when nobody is having fun. Both sides are mad at each other. There is a possible solution to the disagreement.

Mean Moment is when someone is being hurt on purpose. It is an isolated event and doesn’t happen regularly. This is bucket-dipping.

Bullying is when the meanness happens over and over (repeatedly) and on purpose. It is one sided.

Check out the following website for some more information and games you can play with your child(ren) to learn more about bullying.
