Art Class News, Fall 2020
The Middle School Art room upstairs is a very quiet place this school year, as Mrs. Fischer has taken the “show on the road” and brings weekly Art Classes to classrooms this semester! As much as we all miss being in our beautiful, light-filled art space, we know that health and safety are priorities. The temporary situation of having “Art on a Cart” is going well, and we are finding lots of silver linings despite some of the challenges of 2020! Plus, it’s not forever…we look forward to getting back into the Art Room in 2021!

Given that we are now working on art projects in classrooms and many students are working from home in a “virtual” format, many of our usual/traditional “messy” projects (canvas painting, sculpture, ceramics) are temporarily on hold. We are focusing on learning and working with more simple, easy-clean-up materials that are portable!

The other focus of our study this year has been a more in-depth look at contemporary artists. Many of the artists we have “drawn inspiration from” are working and living right now, and are also prominent on social media (or became FAMOUS because of social media!). For example, students in 5th grade learned about artists Jen Stark and Ryan Conners. 6th grade studied the work of 91-year-old Japanese artist, Yayoi Kusama. (did you see Yayoi’s giant balloon in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade?). 7th and 8th grade learned more about American illustrator/filmmaker/animator Tim Burton and Belgian YouTube-famed artist Vexx. 8th graders also looked at the playful murals of American artist Kelsey Montague.

On the technical side of things, students access all the Art lessons (videos, step-by-step directions, exemplars) through our online learning platform, Canvas. That way, whether they are learning in-person from Mrs. Fischer, or from home, they can access the material. Students are assigned about 2 projects per month. (This does not seem like a lot…but students have Art Class once every 5 school days (7th and 8th grade) or every 7 school days (5th and 6th grade). We generally work on all our pieces for two class periods, sometimes more outside of class. Students and parents, if you are in need of any art supplies at home during virtual learning, please contact Mrs. Fischer, and we can arrange for a pick-up.

Basketball Games Have Begun!
Boys basketball is in full swing with students participating in games both home and away. Mr. Nikson and Mr. Johnson are the 7th grade coaches and Mr. Berg and Mr. Schuren are the 8th grade coaches. Good luck to our basketball players this season!

Seeking Substitute Teachers
The School District of Sheboygan Falls is actively seeking substitute teachers for immediate placement in classrooms.

In order to keep schools open for face to face learning, the District is seeking anyone with a teaching license or a bachelor’s degree to assist in filling open positions. Emergency licenses or permits may be granted to qualified applicants. You do not need a teaching license to substitute, as a bachelor’s degree qualifies you to be a substitute teacher.

SFMS Messenger – October 30, 2020
October 30th, 2020

October 30, 2020
Greetings SFMS Families,

Thank you for your continued support and flexibility as we navigate this unique school year. We, the SFMS staff, appreciate your participation in this year’s parent/teacher conferences. Many families reported that they enjoyed having the flexibility of attending via phone conversation or Google Meet.

This was a new format for all. Thank you for giving it a try. We are constantly learning and growing. We learned that although we miss seeing families face-to-face, there may be many who prefer to have the flexibility of time and be able to join from wherever their family schedule takes them.

Sincerely,
SFMS Principal
School Calendar Changes for November and December
The Board of Education met this week and made changes to the school calendar to allow our staff additional in-service days and time as they balance in-person, virtual and hybrid learning. Please adjust your family calendars accordingly. Your child(ren) have been working hard and hopefully enjoy the time. As always, reading is one of the fundamental stepping stones to learning. Encourage your child to spend time with a favorite book on these days. The District will seek feedback about additional days, if needed, for the second semester.

November 13 – in-service for staff, no school for students
November 25 – no school for staff or students
December 21 – in-service for staff, no school for students
December 22 – no school for staff or students

Reminders to our Bus Riders
Our bus drivers would like to remind students to:
  • have a facial covering on before boarding the bus;
  • keep the facial covering on for the entire ride;
  • stay in the assigned seat.
Thanks for doing your part to keep the bus safe!
Isolate? Quarantine?
Whether to isolate or quarantine can be confusing, the below assists in explaining the differences.
Sheboygan Country School Superintendent and Health Department Communication
The Sheboygan County school superintendents, in conjunction with the health department, recently sent a communication to all school families imploring them to follow health and safety guidelines in order to maintain in-person instruction in our schools. As we contact trace, we have found that the cases enter our schools and are contracted outside of our buildings. We have been able to move swiftly and accurately to minimize spread, and are asking for our family and community help. We are all in this together and want our current learning model of in-person learning to be sustained. The letter is shared again here.
Morning Meetings
At the middle school, we have implemented morning meetings this year as another way to build community. Our students want to feel safe, supported and known well in our classrooms and morning meetings help us to do that. All cohorts start the day with a greeting, time to share, a short activity, announcements and a mindful moment to transition into learning. These constructive conversations help to prepare our students for their day. Morning meetings give our students and staff the opportunity to build & practice many important skills, such as SEL skills, that are needed for academic, emotional & social success.

Why Morning Meetings Matter:
  • Strengthen Connections and Relationship Skills: Students practice communication skills during their time to share. They also learn how to listen, cooperate with others, and form rewarding relationships with teachers and peers.
  • Increase Self-Confidence: Sharing personal stories can be scary. Morning meetings provide a safe and caring environment that encourages students to open up and build trust in others, which increases their confidence.
  • Promote Social Awareness: According to the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL), the four central areas of social awareness include perspective-taking, empathy, appreciating diversity, and respect for others. Morning meetings teach all of these skills and also give students opportunities to practice them in real-life situations.
  • Encourage Positive Behavior Toward Others: Morning meetings promote a positive school culture where everyone’s voice and opinions matter. This in turn creates a norm around the need to respect others.

Case in School Letters
As of this week, we will no longer send the Case in School letters via Infinite Campus, as our families have indicated “letter fatigue.” We have instead started a “tracker” on our website. This is updated weekly so that families can be informed of positive cases as well as the number of quarantined students each week. The tracker can be found in the right navigation area on this page: https://www.sheboyganfalls.k12.wi.us/district/covid-19 .

This tracker will be updated each Friday by our district nurses.   Note that close contacts will continue to receive communication directly from the school and county health department.
The band plays on!

Personalized Instruction
Band might look a bit different right now, but our students still play on! Mrs. Winkler is focusing on personalize band labs. Students meet in small groups with Mrs. Winkler and focus on personalized instruction around SF music department goals of being artful, tuneful and beatful.

6th Grade Beginning Band students have been “getting to know” their instruments as well as working on reading both rhythm and notes. 7th & 8th Grade Band students explored the Tuneful and Beatful aspects of music this week in labs working on “Theme from The Avengers” (8th Grade) and a variety of spooky tunes (7th Grade).
GREAT NEWS! Free Breakfast and Lunch
for the rest of the school year!
We notified our families in September that free meals for ALL students were available until the end of December for both virtual and in-person students.
We have recently been notified that this has been extended until the end of the school year, unless federal funding runs out. Please watch the video to learn more. Students’ accounts will reflect that students received the meals with a no charged indicated. The only exception is when students choose ala carte items.

SFMS Messenger – August 14, 2020
August 20th, 2020

August 14, 2020
Welcome Back!

Welcome back to school! It is hard to believe that school is less than one month away. There has been lots of planning going on as we prepare to welcome students back to school face to face and virtually.

While we look forward to seeing our students face-to-face on September 1st, it is important to recognize that we are not yet back to “normal.” Our students and staff will be adjusting to a new daily schedule, smaller gatherings, physical distancing, and adherence to public health guidelines. We have the utmost confidence that our school community will come together and provide a safe and positive experience for our students. It is obvious that there are many questions on what school will look like this fall.

As always, please contact the middle school office at 467-7880 for any questions that you may have. We recognize that our families may have many questions as the first day approaches. For your reference, here is a link to our district Return to School Plan. This plan was emailed to district families last week. This document contains the our school return to school plans.

What does a cohort look like?
As detailed in the Responsible Return to School Plan, middle school students will be a part of a specific cohort each day. Students will report to their cohort upon arrival to school each day. Backpacks will be kept with students in their cohort at this time. Students will remain with their cohort for core (language arts, math, science, and social studies) and related studies instruction (except for physical education and band/choir) and lunch/recess. Movement breaks will be built into the day for students. Students will have assigned seats for the time-being. Plexi-glass barriers will be added to tables to account for further distancing.
Bus Information/Drop-off/Pick-up
Drivers and riders will wear facial coverings in accordance with the Governor’s order and the District’s Responsible Restart plan (exceptions may be made for those with medical conditions); riders will apply hand sanitizer upon entering the bus; riders will sit in assigned seats and siblings will share a seat; non-resident students will no longer receive transportation services; special education transportation will have individually assigned seat belts/harnesses.

When students riding the bus arrive in the morning, fifth and seventh grade students will enter Door 7 and sixth and eighth grade students will enter Door 10. This is to help spread out student flow and traffic as they enter the building. The same exits will be utilized when bus students leave at the end of the day.

All students arriving via parent drop-off will enter through the main entrance and head to their neighborhoods. At the end of the day, seventh and eighth grade students either walking or pick-up will exit the main doors. Fifth and sixth grade students walking or pick-up will exit their neighborhood outside exit doorways. This will help spread out students as they wait for their rides.

If you have further questions regarding bussing, please contact Heidenreiter Bus at 467-2551.
Breakfast and Lunch
Breakfast and lunch times will look different to start the year. Students will have the opportunity to grab breakfast when they arrive at school. All items offered will be of the grab-and-go nature. Students will bring their breakfast directly to their cohort room and will not have the opportunity at this time to sit and eat in the commons when they arrive. We are currently working on a no-touch, ID badge option so that students do not have to put in their personal identification numbers.

For lunch, students will eat in the commons and the gymnasium in order to allow for physical distancing and sanitation. Half a grade-level will eat and the other half will go outside for recess. All students will go outside for the time being. This is so that we can rotate eating locations for cleaning and sanitizing. Same as above, students will be offered options that are pre-package and or served by staff following social distancing guidelines. Students will NOT be able to purchase a la carte items until further notice to give kitchen staff time to adjust to the new school year. Microwaves will not be available for student use at this time. Finally, plexi-glass barriers are being added to lunch tables to assist with distancing while eating.
Facial Coverings Resource for Families
Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin has shared some insight on how to help our children transition to wearing masks in the school setting and beyond.
Virtual Instruction
For those families who have chosen virtual instruction for your child(ren), a few words on what to expect. Classes will be live streamed for virtual students using Google Meet. Virtual students will join their core classes (language arts, math, science, and social studies) online regularly scheduled times and follow the schedule consistent with in-person students. Teachers will take attendance based on the student’s online presence. Grade-levels will share their daily core schedules with you. Students will receive related studies instruction via Canvas and will have the opportunity to meet virtually with their teachers.

Canvas will be the primary tool for access to daily learning activities and resources.
All students will be provided a Chromebook to access materials.
The virtual experience may look different for hands-on activities and elective courses and may require alternative activities based on the specific materials needed to complete in-person tasks. Some activities and course offerings may not be offered virtually.
From the Principal
Dear Families,

We have missed your children! We look forward to the start of school on September 1st. Student schedules were initially to be released on August 7. However, we are delaying this in order to address family choices in face-to-face or virtual learning. We will release student cohorts/schedules in late August. Our schedule will visually look different than in prior years to account for the temporary change in our schedule. As the school year moves along, we will reflect upon the current situation and modify schedules when given clearance to do so.

We look forward to the start of the school year! Thank you for your collaboration and support as we embark on this new adventure.

Sincerely,
SFMS Principal

Please communicate these restrictions to your student(s) so that they know your expectations. Purchases made by students will result in charges to their food service account. If your student attempts to make a purchase, the food service staff will remind the student of your restriction. The food service staff will do their best to monitor parental restriction requests; however, if a sale is made you are responsible for payment.

A Message from Our School Nurses
Coronavirus isn’t rare. In fact, seasonal coronavirus activity typically increases in Wisconsin this time of year, along with influenza and other respiratory viruses. Attention is heightened in this outbreak because it is a novel, or new, form of the virus.

“We know people are wondering what to do to protect themselves and their families from this virus. Our best advice is to follow the same steps for avoiding colds and flu, including staying home when you’re sick, covering coughs and sneezes, and frequently washing hands,” Ayers said.

People who are planning a trip to China should keep an eye on news reports and be aware of this rapidly changing situation. People who have returned from China and are feeling sick should contact their health care provider and let them know about the travel and symptoms before going to a clinic, office, or emergency room.

DHS is providing updates on 2019 novel coronavirus, including case counts, on our
Outbreaks and Investigations webpage
. It will be updated by 2 p.m. each afternoon.

Because we are still in flu season and the flu is also a serious respiratory disease, we continue to encourage everyone to get a flu shot, if you are able.

As we wrap up January, now would be a good time for a few reminders regarding drop-off and pick-up procedures. When students are coming to and going from school, please use the drop-off loop or park your car in the parking lot. The parking lot should not be used as a drop-off or pick-up location due to safety reasons with cars coming and going. Students should enter and exit the school at the main entrance. Because of that, we are asking that students are dropped off and picked up in that location. Finally, the Greenview entrance is closed during the school day. That entrance is reserved for our buses only.

We, the staff at SFMS, recognize that the morning and afternoon can be a hectic time for our families. We sincerely appreciate your attention to this procedures in order to ensure safety for all students.

Sincerely,
SFMS Principal

District Launches New App
We are excited to announce the launch of the “Sheboygan Falls School Dist” app by SchoolInfoApp which is now available for iOS™, Android™, and Windows™ devices. The app enables parents, students, and staff to stay connected and informed about what’s happening at the District level, as well as all three of our schools.
Families will still need to use Infinite Campus to make lunch payments and grades, as well as Canvas to view student work. Both of these applications are linked at the bottom of our new app.

More information about our app, as well as helpful hints can be found on our website:

The SFSDconnect app that was previously being used will be discontinued.

From the Nurses
As the cold weather is upon us and we are indoors with each other and our families please remember some important health tips.

National Handwashing Week is December 1-7, 2019. This is so important for Infection Prevention.

Follow these simple steps:
  • Wash or sanitize your hands upon entering the building.
  • Always wash or sanitize your hands when dirty or before eating.
  • Do not cover you cough or sneeze with your hands.
  • Finally, remember to never touch your T zone (mucous membranes of the eyes, nose or mouth) This reduces your chances of getting sick from a respiratory or gastro-intestinal infection.

SPREAD THE WORD NOT THE GERMS!!!!!!!!!
Counselor’s Corner
Our value this month is honor. Honor is letting someone know you see how valuable they really are. What are some ways you honor people in your life?
  • Honor is our value this month and it is a way to make smart decisions. Showing someone honor is smart because it builds a relationship with that person. Learning about people and being able to work together with others are great ways to help you make smart decisions.
  • It is great timing, too, since this is the month we celebrate Thanksgiving. Showing gratitude for someone is a lot like honoring them. How can you let someone know you are grateful for what they have done for you?
  • Mohandas Gandhi was a lawyer from India who practiced nonviolence to change laws. He pushed for the rights of the poorest Indians who were mistreated under British rule. He was known for his integrity. He did not ask anything of his supporters that he did not do himself. Gandhi led his people to nonviolently protest British rule until they attained independence in 1947. Our Big Idea is honor, letting someone know you see how valuable they are. Mohandas Gandhi was honored for his leadership and dedication to his community.
  • As we come to the end of the month, it would be a great idea to make a list of adults who help you and make sure you find time to thank them. There could be dozens of people if you really think about it, so you should get started as soon as you can!
  • No matter what you choose to do after high school, knowing how to honor people for their actions will play a part in your next steps. Working in a team and being a manager of others require that we know how to honor others for their hard work. Learning about other people and what brings them joy is a great way to know how to honor them.
Lego League News

Our Notification System is back to Infinite Campus
System Alert test November 3
School District of Sheboygan Falls is returning to Infinite Campus for its notification system.

The following information asks you to update your preferences in Infinite Campus to receive emergency notifications and also explains why we are making the request.

How to update Infinite Campus preferences:

You are already part of Infinite Campus as a parent/guardian in this District. At registration, you would have selected your preferences, or settings, for receiving important notifications. However, to be sure everyone has their preferences up-to-date, please:

· Go into Infinite Campus Parent Portal and confirm that your notifications are correctly selected. Infinite Campus requires you to opt into receiving text messages, as some phone plans charge to receive texts.

· We have included a diagram below to show you how to do that.

Why is the District using Infinite Campus for emergency notifications?

Earlier this school year, the district informed parents/guardians that the District was switching to a new notification system. To make the change, we asked parents/guardians to create their preferences for notifications using Campus Suite. We made that request so that we could conduct a test of the new system. Unfortunately, the test demonstrated that the service is not as reliable as we would like it to be. We first tried to work with the company, but in the end, we determined that the fix was too far down the road for us to be comfortable. We decided to go back to Infinite Campus because the reliability of an emergency notification system is extremely important.

Finding the problems BEFORE actually needing to use the system is good news, yet we realize it may be confusing or it may be an inconvenience. We are sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused. Thank you to everyone who helped us test an alternative system, and thank you also for your cooperation to update Infinite Campus.

How do I know Infinite Campus is working?

We will run one additional test of Infinite Campus alert notification on Sunday, November 3 at noon. If you do not receive the test message, please check your notification settings again. You can also call the school office on Monday for assistance.
Virtual Learning Day Parent Session November 4
Virtual Learning Days (VLD) can be used in the event of severe weather events (e.g., wind chill, snow, flooding) and illness epidemics. The Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction piloted VLD in districts throughout the state with great success. Given the weather forecasted for the upcoming winter,
the School District of Sheboygan Falls is preparing for the use of VLD.

We are thankful for those families who recently completed the survey that was sent out to check on home Internet access. The results indicate that our students should be successful connecting their 1:1 devices or using a home computer. If this is not the case, our staff will make every attempt to make an alternative activity available.

If you would like to learn more about VLD, please read the document linked below. We are also offering an evening session for families and their caregivers to learn more. This event will take place on Monday, November 4 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.
at the middle school commons area. In addition, on November 14, we will be assigned virtual homework for grades 1 through 8, as these students are normally not allowed to take their Chromebooks home. This should be a great opportunity for families to check connectivity with a school-issued device to your home network and report issues to their teachers.

Read the family handout for additional information.
STEM Experiences

The fifth grade STEM classes are fortunate to be learning about agriculture from Mr. Brunner, one of our SFHS teachers!

7th grade STEM students took a virtual “field trip” to look at the structure of different bridges in the world.

Mr. Bohman’s class came to the STEM lab this morning to go on a virtual field trip to support their science learning on pollination.
Vaping Presentations November 21
E-cigarette use has become an epidemic among our nation’s youth and you as the parent have an important role in addressing this issue.

Talk with Your Kids
You can influence your children’s decision about whether to use e-cigarettes. Even if you have used tobacco yourself, your children will listen if you discuss your struggles with nicotine addiction. Be clear that you don’t approve of them smoking or using e-cigarettes, and that you expect them to live tobacco-free.

From the Nurses
The Wisconsin Department of Health Services recommends that everyone age 6 months old and older get vaccinated against the flu. The vaccine is safe and effective and can prevent long absences from school and work.
In addition, there are steps the whole family can take to prevent and stop the spread of illness. These include:
·
Wash your hands often with soap and water, or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
·         Cover your cough or sneeze with your upper sleeve, and try to avoid touching your face with your hand.
·         If you use a tissue, throw it away after one use.
·         Never share drinking cups, straws, and utensils.
·         When possible, avoid being exposed to people who are sick with flu-like symptoms.
·         Eat nutritious meals, get plenty of rest, and do not smoke.
·         Frequently clean commonly touched surfaces, like doorknobs, the refrigerator handles, your phone, and faucets.

If your child shows signs of illness, such as a high fever, cough, sneezing, or runny nose, please keep them home until 24 hours after the symptoms pass to prevent them from spreading illness to classmates and staff. You can find our policy on absences in the district handbook.

Working together, we can make this a healthy school year for everyone.
Counselors’ Corner
Our value this month is honor. Honor is letting someone know you see how valuable they really are. What are some ways you honor people in your life?
  • This month, we will think about teachers, family members, friends, community members and leaders and how we can show them that they are important to us.
  • Martin Luther King, Gandhi, and Thomas Jefferson were those who had good reputations. Their reputation for honesty and integrity allowed them to lead and effect social change. They had the power to make a difference. It is for this reason and many more that we honor them.
  • Ever heard of the phrase “good as gold” used? For example, a substitute might say that the “students were good as gold.” This is quote simply means that the students’ actions were genuine and found valuable. Our Big Idea this month is honor, letting someone know you see how valuable they are.
  • Honor is letting someone know you see how valuable they really are. Who do you honor? What ways can you show them their value, while knowing that showing someone honor doesn’t have to cost a thing?
  • Honor is a way to make smart decisions. Showing someone honor is smart because it builds a relationship with that person. Learning about people and being able to work together with others are great ways to help you make smart decisions.
