SFES Communicator – November 4, 2021

November 4, 2021
Message from the Principals
We hope everyone was able to enjoy a fun-filled weekend. All of our classes are in full swing and students have been working hard to meet their grade level standards. As the calendar has turned to November we have a lot of big things happening at the elementary school.

  • Parent Conferences and the Scholastic Book Fair are highlights of the first week of November. Check out the details below!

  • Note that we have a number of students not dressed for our chilly weather during their recesses. We play outside every day the temperature is above zero! Please make sure to send students to school with appropriate coats and hats. If you need any support with this please reach out to Nikki Humski at [email protected] .

Thank you, as always, for your partnership in supporting every student on their learning path.

Lynn Bub, SFES Principal
Dave Pieters, SFES Associate Principal
Update from Superintendent Bennin
Here we are, having just turned the calendar to November … which means we have wrapped up our first quarter, parent-teacher conferences are underway, the high school musical is premiering tonight, and the days and nights are getting chilly!

As we enter this new season and new quarter, I want to thank you for your dedication to the district and for your partnership and collaboration as we foster an environment for your children to continue growing socially, emotionally, and academically.

Should you have feedback for the district, please do not hesitate to reach out.

Stay Warm and Healthy,
Annalee Bennin
Book Fair Fun!
Need to do some Holiday shopping? Consider BOOKS from our Scholastic Book Fair. Students will have an opportunity to visit the book fair during library lessons November 2nd – 9th. The Book Fair will also be open during Parent Conferences! It is located in the Recharge Room (former computer lab) next to the Elementary Library.

You can also shop online HERE.
Parent Conferences
A reminder that our Parent-Teacher Conferences are right around the corner on November 4th and 9th. This is an excellent opportunity to hear about your child’s learning path and partner with school for everyone’s success.

HERE is the link to sign up, it’s not too late!
Fall Social Learning
Thank you for helping us connect traditional fall celebrations to our learning! Our 4K through 2nd grade students chose a story book character and a book to tie to reading, while 3rd and 4th grade students enjoyed science and social studies themes in their dress-up. This is a long-standing tradition at SFES, and we are so excited to keep the learning going while enjoying special events.

Dave Pieters, SFES Associate Principal
Welcome Mr. Pieters!
I hope this update finds you all well and enjoying our fabulous Wisconsin weather. We have had a great start to our school year, students and staff are back in the swing of things. For me, it has been great getting to know the students in and out of the classroom. I have had many opportunities to build connections with students while enjoying some fun outside at recess. The staff at SFES have been so welcoming to all of those that are new and returning to the building. It has made my transition to a new building and role quite pleasant. We have done a lot of work to have this smooth start, but our work isn’t done and we will continue to build connections while we help our students grow. Please don’t hesitate to reach out.

Thank you,
Dave Pieters
Update from Superintendent Bennin
It is October! Thank you for trusting your child(ren) to our district and staff everyday. I do not think we can thank you enough and also emphasize how important this responsibility is to us as a district. We have created a learning environment where we witness our learners and educators actively, inquisitively, and safely learning each day, despite a pandemic that is still looming.

We thank you for your patience as we continue to balance a pandemic and also the importance for your children to be in school growing socially, emotionally, and academically. We appreciate the feedback that helps us to continually improve our practices and also the grace you offer us in these continually fluid times.

We would also like to thank our supportive Board of Education and recognize them as this is School Board Appreciation week. As always, do not hesitate to reach out if you have questions or wonderings, we are always happy to hear from you and work with you to continually improve our district and create the destination district for our county.

With Gratitude,
Annalee Bennin

We continue to ask you to monitor your child(ren) each morning and keep them home if they have symptoms.  If your child has a cough or two other symptoms combined, they will need a negative COVID test (or doctor’s note) in order to return prior to their 10 days of isolation. Messages that are left with questions about keeping your kids home may not be answered until the afternoon. While waiting, it is in your best interest to schedule a test / doctor appointment, and you can always cancel if deemed unnecessary.

Message from the Principals
Welcome to the last full month of school. We are so happy that we have been in-person learning this entire year. As we focus on the end of the school year, we would like the students to think about how they can show their leadership within the building and with their peers. This is a great time of year to remind your child that they will be in an older grade next year and to practice being role models.

And, congratulations to our 4th graders as your time to be Middle School students is quickly approaching.

Together we can all do great things!

A Message from Superintendent Bennin
As you may have heard, the CDC released new updates last week around operational strategies for K-12 schools. The Wisconsin Department of Health has also adopted the CDC updated guidance.

Due to our District’s ongoing dedication to mitigating the spread through practices such as wearing facial coverings, sanitizing our hands, physically distancing when possible, and additional cleaning strategies, we are able to safely adjust some of our practices for contact tracing and physical distancing using the new guidelines.

Masks will continue to be worn by students and staff at school. If/When the Governor’s Emergency Order is lifted (currently expires 4.5.21), we will continue to mask under BOE policy Dress and Grooming (po5511).

If your family travels for Spring break, or at any time, please continue to monitor for symptoms and keep your child home if symptomatic. Contact either Nurse Lisa Hackbarth or Nurse Amber Silva for the next best steps.  In addition, you can find the decision tree HERE.

THANK YOU for all your efforts to get us to this point in the school year and to FINISH STRONG! It has been the efforts of each of us that has kept each other safe and learning in person.

Make it a great day!

Message from the Counselors
Navigating the world of online media, internet and video games can be challenging at times. There is so much out there that is confusing or misleading, and it can sometimes be hard to know what is safe or age-appropriate. Here are some great tips and resources to help guide you through this challenge.

Safe Use Tips:
  • Set Up Boundaries
It is easy to become absorbed in a game and play for hours at a time, but children
benefit from a variety of activities. Agree on a time limit to play games and suggest
other active activities they might like.

  • Do Your Homework.
Remember, the content of the games is just as important as the amount of time
they spend playing. When your children ask you for a new game, do your
homework before you agree to purchase it. Learn the game’s ESRB Rating, read
reviews, and even play the game first before you allow your kids to play. If the
game isn’t appropriate for their age or doesn’t match your value system, find a
different game.

  • Make It a Social Event
Video games are fun for adults too. Parents can spend time with their children by
having a family gaming night (just make sure that the games are appropriate for
everyone involved).

  • Keep Video Game Systems Out of Your Children’s Bedrooms
By keeping the video games in a family area, you can see how, and how often, they
are being used, and you can also more easily keep track of time limits. Studies have
shown that children with electronic media in their bedrooms are more likely to be
overweight and have sleep problems.

For more information about media, online safety and specific games, check out Common Sense Media.
4th Grade Team Talks
If you have a 4th grader, please review THIS upcoming Team Talks information from Britne Lorge.
Returning from Virtual Learning?
Heidenreiter Bus Service is requesting that if your child is returning from virtual learning and will be taking the bus, please contact the bus company at 467-2651. They need to be contacted at least one school day before the child expects to ride so that they can adjust the seating charts and route logs. Thank you!
2021-2022 Open Enrollment
The inter-district public school Open Enrollment program allows parents to apply for their children to attend public school in a school district other than the one in which they reside or to remain in their current district in the event that they move out of the district before the start of the 2021-2022 school year (Moving? There is no tuition cost for students participating in the Open Enrollment program, but parents are responsible for transporting their student(s) to and from school.

The open enrollment period for the 2021-2022 school year is from February 1, 2021 until 4:00 p.m., April 30, 2021.

A Message from Our Nurses

With cough and cold season upon us, we’d like to review what are considered COVID symptoms and therefore require your child to stay home:

ONE of the following: cough, trouble breathing, or loss of taste/smell
OR
TWO of the following: congestion, sore throat, fever, headache, body aches, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, fatigue

We are asking that adults being tested for COVID to please have their children stay home, even if they are not showing symptoms, until test results are received.

The day included an author visit from Angie Bullaro
Thank you so much to Angie Bullaro for joining us and reading her book Breaking the Ice: The True Story of the First Woman to Play in the National Hockey League.

She helped remind us that anything is possible if you believe in yourself and follow your dreams!
Will You Be Our Valentine?

A reminder to send Valentine’s in with your student by Friday, February 12th. Please no candy. If you’ve included a pencil or other non-food item, please seal in the envelope (if possible).

We will quarantine the Valentine’s over the weekend and send them home with your child on Monday, February 15th.

Classroom celebrations will utilize treats from the kitchen for safety.

Thank you for your help in keeping the learning going (including social learning) this school year!

Virtual Learning Reminders
We are delighted to be welcoming more families back to face-to-face instruction!

In case your family should need it, attached are the requirements for all families that choose to have their child learn virtually, along with helpful information for making a decision for your family.

Just a friendly reminder that if you are going on vacation or not attending school because of other reasons that are not COVID related, you will need to use your parent request days. Once again, virtual learning is not intended for students that are on vacation or out for non-COVID related reasons.
How Fast is Your Internet?
DPI is collaborating with Measurement Lab (M-Lab) to collect data on internet connection speeds across Wisconsin. DPI will use M-Lab’s internet speed test data to create detailed reports and to provide maps of internet speeds across the state. These reports can help the Governor’s Task Force on Broadband Access and other broadband task groups target initiatives to improve internet speeds and performance.

You can help add to this data by testing your internet connection speeds. The URL to link to is https://speed.measurementlab.net/#/. Please take the speed test SEVERAL TIMES–the more Wisconsin data there is the more accurate picture we have about internet connection speeds across the state.
2021-2022 Open Enrollment
The inter-district public school Open Enrollment program allows parents to apply for their children to attend public school in a school district other than the one in which they reside or to remain in their current district in the event that they move out of the district before the start of the 2021-2022 school year (Moving? See HERE for more information on remaining in District through the school year). Open Enrollment will allow student(s) to continue attending school in the School District of Sheboygan Falls. Please call Mara Nack at 920-467-7893 for additional information or check the Department of Public Instruction Website at: https://dpi.wi.gov/open-enrollment (also check the 2021-2022 Open Enrollment Regular Application Period Brochure).

There is no tuition cost for students participating in the Open Enrollment program, but parents are responsible for transporting their student(s) to and from school.

The open enrollment period for the 2021-2022 school year is from February 1, 2021 until 4:00 p.m., April 30, 2021.

Applications must be done on the DPI (Department of Public Instruction) website at https://dpi.wi.gov/open-enrollment. A link to this site will also be available on the school web site during the application period at: www.sheboyganfalls.k12.wi.us. The DPI website will be active from February 1, 2021 until 4:00 p.m. on April 30, 2021.

If you anticipate a possible move out of the School District of Sheboygan Falls, please complete the Open Enrollment application as soon as possible. You have the right to cancel your application at any time and are not bound to enrollment. If you are currently attending under a Tuition Waiver, you will need to complete an Open Enrollment application for the upcoming school year.
Seeking Substitute Teachers
The School District of Sheboygan Falls is actively seeking substitute teachers for immediate placement in classrooms.

In order to keep schools open for face to face learning, the District is seeking anyone with a teaching license or a bachelor’s degree to assist in filling open positions. Emergency licenses or permits may be granted to qualified applicants. You do not need a teaching license to substitute, as a bachelor’s degree qualifies you to be a substitute teacher.

Holiday Celebrations
This year, our Holiday Sing-along will be during the school day in classrooms, but our students will also sing in video format for their classroom families (your child’s teacher will send the link). We look forward to the next time we can sing together as a community. In the meantime, share some songs as a family or with your extended family, however you may visit over the winter break (Google Meet, anyone?).

Winter Weather Outerwear Reminder
We play outside every day that the temperature (including wind chill) is above zero degrees Fahrenheit, thus please be sure your child has appropriate outerwear (coat, hat, hand coverings), and dig out those snow pants and boots (snow will be here before you know it).

If you find you need assistance with these items, please reach out to our school counselors or school office.

Happiest of Holidays to our Falcon Families! While these holidays may look a bit different, we hope there will be special memories and time to rest and recharge. Remember to do a little bit of reading over break to keep the learning going, and find time to get some fresh air when the weather permits.

School Calendar Changes for November and December
The Board of Education met this week and made changes to the school calendar to allow our staff additional in-service days and time as they balance in-person, virtual and hybrid learning. Please adjust your family calendars accordingly. Your child(ren) have been working hard and hopefully enjoy the time. As always, reading is one of the fundamental stepping stones to learning. Encourage your child to spend time with a favorite book on these days. The District will seek feedback about additional days, if needed, for the second semester.

November 13 – in-service for staff, no school for students
November 25 – no school for staff or students
December 21 – in-service for staff, no school for students
December 22 – no school for staff or students
Reminders

Conferences will be virtual this school year. You should have received the conference sign-up information with the option to have a Google Meet or a phone call. Conferences are scheduled for 15 minutes. Please be mindful of the time to allow for everyone to have the opportunity to have a conference.

Please call the office for questions and for 4K conference scheduling. Here is the link for K-4th grade conference sign-up: picktime.com/sdsf
Reminders to our Bus Riders
Our bus drivers would like to remind students to:
  • have a facial covering on before boarding the bus;
  • keep the facial covering on for the entire ride;
  • stay in the assigned seat.
Thanks for doing your part to keep the bus safe!
Sheboygan Country School Superintendent and
Health Department Communication
The Sheboygan County school superintendents, in conjunction with the health department, recently sent a communication to all school families imploring them to follow health and safety guidelines in order to maintain in-person instruction in our schools. As we contact trace, we have found that the cases enter our schools and are contracted outside of our buildings. We have been able to move swiftly and accurately to minimize spread, and are asking for our family and community help. We are all in this together and want our current learning model of in-person learning to be sustained. The letter is shared again here.
Case in School Letters
As of this week, we will no longer send the Case in School letters via Infinite Campus, as our families have indicated “letter fatigue.” We have instead started a “tracker” on our website. This is updated weekly so that families can be informed of positive cases as well as the number of quarantined students each week. The tracker can be found in the right navigation area on this page: https://www.sheboyganfalls.k12.wi.us/district/covid-19 .

This tracker will be updated each Friday by our district nurses.   Note that close contacts will continue to receive communication directly from the school and county health department.
Virtual Learning Reminders
With the uptick in COVID cases in the county and across the state, many families have questioned the requirements if they choose to have their child learn virtually. Click HERE for the requirements for all families that choose to have their child learn virtually, along with helpful information for making a decision for your family.
Isolate? Quarantine?
Whether to isolate or quarantine can be confusing, the below assists in explaining the differences.
Counselor Corner
RECESS NEWS! We are trying a few new things at recess to encourage students to make good choices, be kind to each other, and stay safe.

We have an all-school incentive board posted and each class is working toward 40 recesses with positive choices. When they reach their goal, their puzzle piece is removed and our school will be one step closer to our all-school incentive!

If your child was making unexpected or unacceptable choices at recess they may receive a Recess Report (look for it on bright orange paper!). The Recess Report will be sent home so that you are aware of what has been happening at recess. Please take some time to talk to your child about how they can make better and safe choices. If you have any questions or concerns regarding the needs of your child please reach out to your child’s School Counselor. Thank you for your continued support and partnership!

GREAT NEWS! Free Breakfast and Lunch
for the rest of the school year!
We notified our families in September that free meals for ALL students were available until the end of December for both virtual and in-person students.
We have recently been notified that this has been extended until the end of the school year, unless federal funding runs out. Please watch the video to learn more. Students’ accounts will reflect that students received the meals with a no charged indicated. The only exception is when students choose ala carte items.
Falcon Families Update
The next Box Top Deadline is approaching on November 2nd. While most of it has gone digital there are still some traditional Box Tops floating around. Box Tops is allowing families to send those in themselves this year with the craziness that is 2020. PLEASE DO NOT SEND THEM TO SCHOOL! THIS LINK explains how to submit them. Please reach out to your school Box Tops coordinator, Jessica Montambo, with questions ([email protected]).
Seasonal Changes
Fall is in the air and so is the cooler weather. A reminder that outdoor recess happens daily when the temperature is zero degrees and above. Please make sure to send your child with proper gear. If you are not able to provide these for your child, please contact the office. We are happy to help with donations.

Message from the Principals
Dear SFES Families,

As we enter a new month of school, we could not be more proud to still offer both in-person learning and virtual options to our families. Our staff and students have persevered through the new procedures, the safety updates, and flipped learning classrooms. Thank YOU for your kindness, patience, and partnership.

August 14, 2020
Welcome Back!
Greetings, Falcon Families: Despite the challenges presented to us at this time, we are so excited to welcome students back to school!

For your reference, here is the district’s Responsible Return Plan. The information contained in the newsletter below may help to answer specific questions you have, and is based on frequently asked questions from our SFES families. We hope it is helpful to you.
Who is My Child’s Teacher?

Thank you for taking the time to complete the survey sharing your child’s intended learning style for fall (face-to-face or virtual). As we gather student numbers, we may need to adjust class lists, which has delayed sharing this information with families. We plan to share your child’s teacher information at the end of August. An Infinite Campus message will go out notifying you when you can view this information in your parent portal in Infinite Campus.
Facial Coverings Supports for Children
Wearing masks is something new for all of us. Staff will work with with children to understand why we wear masks at school at this time and teach some strategies for use. Here is a great article from Children’s Hospital that may be helpful at home, as well. https://milwaukeecourieronline.com/index.php/2020/07/24/how-to-get-kids-to-wear-a-mask/
Drop Off and Pick Up Notes

We will continue the morning procedures we have established in the past. If you plan to use the parent drop-off circle (from Alfred Miley Avenue), please know there may be more cars than usual. Following procedures will help keep things moving. To help move the car line and move students safely into the building, we will be using door 4 (near the playground) in addition to door 3. Please pull as far forward as possible in the car line and your child(ren) can enter whichever of those two doors is nearest. Staff will be available to help students. We are counting on parents to pull forward, and fewer staff may be directing traffic so we can assist students.

At the end of the day, we will continue our use of PikMyKid. As we plan for more cars, another line will be added for select families. To keep traffic moving, the additional line will be for families without middle school students and/or students with individual students at the ES. This temporary additional pick up line will be located at the back of the building. If you would like to participate in this new car line, please complete this survey: https://forms.gle/nRTJrPHhta3nQFPZ7. We will connect with selected families to share instructions. Thank you for considering this option to help us get all students safely to their destination at the end of the school day.

PikMyKid instructions, car tags for every student, and bus tags for students eligible for the bus will be sent home via postal mail soon.
Supply Drop Off?
Because we have such a large school community, we will not be able to offer a large supply drop-off night this school year. Fortunately, our students know our building well, and our staff are ready to help get students settled on the first day of school and beyond. New families can make an appointment to see our building with their child by calling 920-467-7820. If you are unable to visit us in advance as a new family, please know that we plan on extra special care for our children and families this school year, especially on the first day of school.

Please do not feel obligated to send all of your child’s school supplies with them on the first day. Your child’s teacher will communicate ideas for getting supplies to school without overburdening children’s backpacks and carrying capacity. We would like students to focus on getting to their room, greeting their teacher, and being back in their school.
Bus Details
Drivers and riders will wear facial coverings in accordance with the Governor’s order and the District’s Responsible Restart plan (exceptions may be made for those with medical conditions); riders will apply hand sanitizer upon entering the bus; riders will sit in assigned seats and siblings will share a seat; non-resident students will no longer receive transportation services; special education transportation will have individually assigned seat belts/harnesses.

For remaining bus questions, please contact Heidenreiter Bus at 920-467-2651.
Visitor Policy for 20-21 School Year
We typically love to welcome parents and other family members for
lunch or other special activities. Our district is temporarily restricting visitors. If you need to drop an item off, we will utilize our
vestibule. Parents picking a child up will work with our school nurse in our entrance area (door 2). Thank you for your understanding and flexibility. We assure you we are still smiling behind our masks and can’t wait to welcome you into our building again soon.

Our office staff can help route calls and answer questions to help take care of student and family needs.
Nursing Questions

We are very fortunate to have the help of two Registered Nurses in our district. Nurse Amber Silva is the Registered Nurse who serves the Elementary School and will be supporting students and staff. If you have medications to drop off for your child(ren), please contact the office to set up a time with Nurse Amber. Please fill out the necessary paperwork ahead-of-time to minimize contact during this process.

Nurse Amber also works with our local Department of Health and has advised us during our Responsible Return planning. Thank you, Nurse Amber!
What Will Virtual Learning Look Like?
We have received many questions about Virtual Learning at the Elementary Level. Here is what you can expect:
  • Mini lessons offered live at select times during the school day (and recorded for later viewing, if necessary). These include mini lessons for literacy, math, science, social studies and specials.
  • Small group guided time for math and literacy (live, and likely not recorded, as these are interactive).
  • Independent work time based on the mini lessons of the day. Opportunities/expectations to share this work with the teacher via SeeSaw or Canvas; feedback from the teacher.
  • Weekly live social opportunity with classmates.
  • Being live on meets all day is not appropriate or expected for elementary school students.
  • Home support and some student independence will be crucial to success!

Here is a link with more details.

Dear SFES Families,

Thank you so much for your participation, questions, ideas, and support as we have worked through the process of getting ready for school this year. We are grateful for your partnership in modeling excitement for coming back to school, as well as sharing your calm with your children. Our first weeks will include even more learning as we practice our safety procedures and launch our school year. We can and will do this together. We appreciate you!

Pennies for Patients …
A Success
As part of our Pennies for Patients service learning to benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, staff agreed to do some crazy things! Third grade teachers dressed as snowpeople, and Mrs. Brotz donated her hair (complete with a lesson about professionals being the only people who should cut hair).
Thanks for being good sports, SFES Falcon Staff!
AND … Students earned incentives too. A glimpse into extra recess and play time for 2nd graders.
Mrs. Brotz’s class met their goal for their donation for Pennies for Patients, thus Mrs. Brotz cut her hair for donation!!!
Celebrating our Tuneful, Artful, Beatful Students

Our Second and Fourth grade students performed on the big stage at our high school auditorium for their winter concert on February 20th. Thanks to all who came to see the show and those who watched from home via Facebook Live. This video is archived on our Facebook page if you missed it.
We are so proud of our young musicians, their teachers, and families. Take a look HERE.
2020-21 Class Placement
It is strange to think that we’ll soon be making preliminary preparations for the next school year!
HERE is some information about how we construct classes each year and ways you can share information about your child as a learner.
Share Your Voice on Special Education in WI

March 2 – 6, 2020 is online public forum commenting. The forum gives Council members the opportunity to gather input from families and school staff on the unique challenges and successes of special education in Wisconsin. The Council uses the information gathered to advise the State Superintendent on matters affecting the education of Wisconsin’s children and youth with disabilities. If you would like to participate, provide your comment in English or Spanish March 2 – 6, 2020.
From Our School Nurses
Being stuck indoors through WI winters likely has everyone’s screen time maxed out. It’s understandable!

Remember that kids are not developmentally ready to make their own choices about responsible screen time limits. This doesn’t have to mean cutting it completely out, either.

Be your child’s mentor and explain limits and expectations for screen time.
Model healthy habits that you choose for your family.
They Grow Up So Fast … 2020 Census Reminder

REMINDER:
2020 is a census year. Please see more information HERE.
Food Service Account Restrictions
Students are able to purchase extras in addition to their regular breakfast or lunch. These extras may include a second entree, milk, juice or other snacks. We recognize that not all families wish to allow their students to make those extra purchases. You may contact the Food Service department at 920-550-5893 to request that restrictions be placed on your student’s account. Please communicate these restrictions to your student(s) so that they know your expectations. Purchases made by students will result in charges to their food service account. If your student attempts to make a purchase, the food service staff will remind the student of your restriction. The food service staff will do their best to monitor parental restriction requests; however, if a sale is made you are responsible for payment.
Notice to Parents Who are Moving out of the District
If you are anticipating a move or moving out of the Sheboygan Falls District during the current school year, your student can continue attending school in Sheboygan Falls. Please contact your building office, or the district office, to receive DPI Form PI-9419-B – Request for Tuition Waiver Due to Move, for the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year. Completion of this form will enable your child to continue attending school in the Sheboygan Falls District even though you no longer live within the District boundaries for the remainder of this school year. An open enrollment application or alternate open enrollment application will then need to be completed for the 2020-2021 school year and beyond. Please call Julie Hahn at 467-7893 if you have any questions regarding tuition waivers or open enrollment.
Message from the Principals

SFES Families,

It’s attendance season! At this time of the year, our students sometimes reach a number of absences that requires us to send you a letter per state statute. Rest assured that we understand that developing children experience childhood illnesses (especially this winter), and that family events are an important part of growing upClick here for more information on Wisconsin’s attendance statute, and our responsibilities as a school.
